Without looking, can you touch your left elbow with your right hand? Easy, right?
Now imagine if this simple task felt impossible. Welcome to the daily reality of many children in early childhood settings.
The body awareness crisis is real:
* Kids who bump into everything and everyone
* Kids who can't tell where they end and others' bodies begin
* Little ones who seem shocked when told they've hurt someone
This isn't clumsiness or 'poor behaviour'. It's a sensory and motor system that hasn't fully developed yet.
Next time you're observing poor personal space, or rough play, try this: 30-second body wake-up call:
* Have children pat their arms, legs, and tummy to a simple beat that you're creating with your clapping hands, or tapping your thigh, while saying: "Here are my arms, here are my legs, here is my tummy."
Sound too simple? Watch closely. You'll see children who barely touch themselves, others who hit their body locations quite hard, and some who look genuinely confused about where their body parts are.
This tells you everything about their proprioceptive awareness.
When children know where their body is in space, social chaos decreases dramatically. Less accidental collisions, invaded personal space, or surprised faces when personal space boundaries are crossed.
Your challenge: Try this body check-in for one week. Track which children struggle most. These are your priority kids for movement-based intervention.
