Scenario: It's been raining and now the sun comes out. Ack! Glare! Bright light! You grab your cheap sunglasses you got from a discount store, but they are just not doing the job. It's quite likely those lenses are not polarised, and you are one of the many glare-sensitive people who need polarised lenses.
Polarised lenses work by cutting out reflective light from surfaces such at snow, sand, concrete and, most especially, water. Not only do polarised lenses cut out glare from water, but they also allow the wearer to see *into* the water, which makes them a necessity for fishermen.
If you want a pair of unscripted polarised sunglasses, we have a good stock for you to choose from, but you can also have them made up in your prescription. Comes and see us at 368 Main Road, Glenorchy to try and buy!

There are two ways to have a permanently tinted lens. One is to have polarised lenses, or you can have a simple dyed tint on your lenses. This is exactly what it sounds like, the lenses are put into a vat of dye and left to soak until they have reached the depth of colour you want them to be. The great advantage with this sort of tint is you have the choice of quite a large number of different coloured tints, even two different tints on the one lens. Unfortunately, the lenses are not polarised, so they don't cut down the glare you get off water or a wet road when the sun comes out. But they are budget friendly, and if you aren't glare-sensitive, they are a very good option.

Carrera was created in 1956 in Austria by Wilhelm Anger. Anger wanted to create glasses that both protected and enhanced the performance of athletes. Combining durability and flair, Carrera frames meld well with sports such as car racing and skiing whilst also having designs for fashion. So, you could have skiing goggles, sunglasses and regular glasses all with Carrera frames. What more do you need?

The first type of sunglass lenses I'm going to tell you about are the Transitions lenses. These lenses are clear inside and react to UV light, so they darken when you go outside. This means you only need one pair of glasses for everything, rather than have to have two separate pairs of glasses, one for normal, indoor use, and one for out in the sun, constantly swapping between them. Transitions lenses are also available in a polarised tint.
Transitions tinted lenses are available in 8 different colours, as you can see on the picture here. The pink, sapphire, amethyst, emerald & amber colours are relatively new and are called Style Colours. They can be excellent to have a little fun with and match the colour of your frame. Optical accessorising!

When choosing sunglasses there are several things to think about. Do you want the lenses to have your prescription? Do you want the polarised tint that cuts out 100% of the glare from snow, water or wet roads? Or maybe you are not very light sensitive so you can happily manage a dyed tint, which darkens the light but does not cut out all of the glare. And then there is Transitions, the photosensitive tint, which goes darker or lighter depending upon how much UV light it is exposed to.
For the next three weeks I am going to tell you a bit about each of these lenses, the pros and the cons, giving you something to think about for your next pair of sunglasses.
