Nourish, Feed & Thrive A gentle, family focused, evidenced based and responsive approach to infant and child feeding challenges. But beliefs and passion alone are not enough!

Here are Nourish Feed and Thrive, we provide a gently, family focused, evidenced based and responsive approach to infant and children feeding challenges. Pleasurable feeding can lay the groundwork for infant-health, foster the parent-child relationship and establish a lifelong positive relationship with food. We love nothing more than supporting a mum to enjoy breastfeeding her baby or assist a family to turn stress and battle filled mealtimes into a time of fun and connection. To ensure that we are always providing the very highest level of support to the families, we seek out experts both locally and internationally to learn from. Our work is all evidence based and draws on the latest teaching of training programs.

📣 A Medicare update we want our families to know about.

From the 1st of March, there has been an expansion to Medicare funding for children and young people under 15 who need speech therapy. Because this change has only just come in, many families (and even some GPs) may not have heard about it yet.

For some children, this could help reduce the cost of accessing speech therapy.

This pathway may apply to children who are experiencing things like:ďż˝
• Stuttering
• Ongoing difficulty being understood
• Persistent speech sound errors
• Childhood apraxia of speech or dysarthria
• Speech differences related to cleft lip and/or palate

For eligible children and young people, Medicare may now cover:ďż˝
✔️ Up to 8 assessment sessions
✔️ Up to 20 therapy sessions
✔️ $87.25 rebate per eligible session (current as of March 2026)

That’s more sessions and a higher rebate than many families realise may be available.

Clear speech plays such a big role in a child’s everyday life. When children can be understood more easily, it helps them share their ideas, join conversations, connect with peers and participate more confidently at kindy, school and in the community.

If cost has been a barrier to seeking support, this update may be worth discussing with your GP, as not everyone will meet the eligibility criteria.

We’re sharing this simply so our families have the information 💛

Following on from last weeks Allergy post, we’re now talking Peanuts.. and early, regular exposure is now key 🥜

Updated guidance from Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy supports introducing peanut once your baby is developmentally ready for solids (around 6 months), not delaying it.

The shift is away from avoidance and towards:
• Timely introduction
• Age-appropriate forms (think smooth peanut butter thinned with water or mixed into foods, never whole nuts)
• Ongoing inclusion once tolerated
It’s not a “one and done” situation.

After peanut is introduced and tolerated, keeping it in the diet regularly (around weekly) helps support tolerance.
This recommendation applies to most babies (including many with eczema or a family history of allergy) though some families may benefit from individual guidance before introducing.
A little around the mouth redness can sometimes happen from contact with food on sensitive skin. On its own, that’s not usually an allergy.

Signs that need medical attention include:
• Hives away from where the food touched
• Swelling of lips, eyes or face
• Vomiting
• Breathing changes
Introducing peanut can feel daunting, but small amounts, offered calmly and consistently, is what matters most.

Allergy advice has changed, and egg is a big part of the update 🥚

Current guidance from Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy no longer recommends delaying allergenic foods.

Instead, the focus is on:

✔️ Introducing well-cooked egg once your baby is ready for solids (around 6 months)
✔️ Offering it in an age-appropriate form
✔️ Continuing to include it regularly once tolerated

It’s not just about when you offer egg, it’s about keeping it in the rotation.
Early introduction doesn’t mean large amounts or pressure. Small, calm, regular exposures are what matter most.

And that redness around the mouth?
In many cases, it’s a contact reaction from food touching sensitive skin, not an egg allergy.

If there are no other symptoms (like hives away from the mouth, swelling, vomiting or breathing changes), current guidance supports:

• Continuing to offer the food
• Gently cleaning the skin after meals
• Using a barrier cream if needed

Avoiding foods unnecessarily can increase feeding stress and isn’t recommended without clear allergic symptoms.

If you’re unsure about introducing egg, especially with eczema or a family history of allergy, individual advice is always important.

Today we’re diving into sushi! 🍣

Did you know the type of protein and number of rolls can make a big difference to the nutrition of your meal?

Two rolls of chicken sushi with apple juice vs three rolls of tuna sushi with apple juice, both give protein, but the tuna option packs more protein and healthy fats, while an extra roll increases calories.

Choosing lean proteins, watching sauces, and pairing with water or unsweetened drinks are simple ways to keep your sushi meal balanced without missing out.

Which sushi combo do you normally choose? 🍱

This or That 🥪

Today we’re looking at options from Subway, because not all subs are created equal.

Some combinations can be just as high in calories as a meal from McDonald's, depending on the bread, protein, sauces and extras you choose.

The good news? A few small swaps can make a big difference.
Choosing an uncoated protein, opting for higher fibre bread, being mindful with sauces and skipping the cookie can significantly shift the overall nutrition profile of the meal.
This isn’t about cutting out takeaway, it’s about knowing how to build a more balanced option when you’re there 🤤

Our next comparison from our This or That series is Guzman y Gomez 🌯

Today we’re looking at a Little G’s Burrito Meal with Fries and Apple Juice. Overall, the nachos, burrito and G’s bowl are fairly similar nutritionally, however choosing ground beef instead of chicken or pork increases the overall calories and saturated fat.

When compared with a cheeseburger kids meal from another popular fast food spot, this option is higher in fibre and protein, but also comes in higher in calories, sodium and saturated fat, making the cheeseburger meal the lighter choice overall.

Remember, this isn’t about labelling foods as “good” or “bad”. It’s about understanding what’s in each option so you can make informed choices that work for your family in real life ❤️

This or That 🍟

Our dietitian, Stacey, is exploring takeaway food items and looking beyond the menu to what’s actually inside. We’re comparing popular choices from the same restaurant (or similar items from different spots) and breaking down the nutrition information to help you see how they stack up.

Same restaurant. Similar vibe. Different nutrition profiles.

This isn’t about labelling foods as “good” or “bad”. It’s about understanding what’s in each option so you can make informed choices that work for your family in real life.

Which takeaway spot should we compare next?
