It's estimated that about 5% of Australians have sleep apnoea, with around 1 in 4 men over the age of 30 affected.

Sleep apnoea usually occurs when the throat muscles relax too much during sleep. 😴

A rarer form is when breathing stops during sleep, for a short time, before it begins again.

When this happens, your brain receives a message that something is wrong, and wakes up for a few seconds. This sleep pattern repeats itself hundreds of times, causing you to have broken sleep.

It's so subtle that most people aren't aware the arousal has occurred. So, it's best to look for the signs and symptoms.

If you think you might have sleep apnoea, it's important to speak to your GP. If left untreated for a long time it can increase your chance of high blood pressure. Plus, it can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
