7 Day Mindful Eating Challenge

Here’s a 7‑day mindful eating challenge — each day focuses on one practical mindfulness habit, with an example meal or food type to anchor the experience.

Day 1 – Eat With No Distractions

Focus: Put away phones, screens, and reading material. Eat in quiet awareness.
Meal idea: A colourful salad bowl — mix spinach, cherry tomatoes, avocado, chickpeas, and lemon-tahini dressing. Notice the textures and colours before your first bite.

Day 2 – Engage the Senses

Focus: Before eating, pause to notice aroma, colour, shape, and texture.
Meal idea: Roasted vegetables with quinoa — notice the sizzling sound, caramelized smell, and earthy taste.

Day 3 – Slow Down

Focus: Put the fork down between bites. Chew thoroughly; breathe between bites.
Meal idea: Brown rice with stir-fried chicken and broccoli — savour the chewiness of rice and crispness of broccoli.

Day 4 – Check In With Hunger

Focus: Before eating, rate your hunger from 1–10. Eat only when your body feels truly hungry, not out of habit.
Meal idea: Greek yogurt with berries and nuts — small but satisfying, helps you tune into true hunger and fullness cues.

Day 5 – Gratitude Practice

Focus: Take a moment to appreciate the food’s journey — the growers, transport, preparation.
Meal idea: Sourdough toast with mashed avocado and poached egg — simple, nourishing, and easy to savour mindfully.

Day 6 – Notice Emotional Triggers

Focus: Ask yourself if you’re eating from hunger, boredom, or stress. Adjust accordingly.
Meal idea: If stressed, make a cup of green tea and a small portion of dark chocolate — enjoy them fully rather than mindlessly snacking.

Day 7 – Eat in Celebration

Focus: Savour food slowly with others, share conversation, and enjoy the communal aspect.
Meal idea: Homemade vegetable curry with basmati rice — share with family or friends, focusing on connection as part of nourishment.

Take the time to engage your senses and truly taste and appreciate the experience of consuming nutritional food, your body and mind will thank you.

ANXIETY TOOLKIT- THE 5-4-3-2-1 METHOD

The 5‑4‑3‑2‑1 grounding method is a simple, evidence‑based technique to reduce anxiety and panic by anchoring attention in the present moment. It works by engaging the five senses—sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste—to interrupt spiralling thoughts and calm the nervous system. Utilise this anywhere, anytime to alleviate anxiety and to bring yourself back into alignment.

Here’s how to do it step by step:

Five things you can see
Look around you and name five things you can see.
They can be big (a tree outside) or small (a pen on your desk).
Purpose: Shifts focus from internal worries to external, concrete surroundings.

Four things you can feel
Tune into your sense of touch and identify four sensations.
Examples: the texture of your clothing, your feet against the floor, the air on your skin, or the weight of your body on a chair.
Purpose: Connects you to physical reality and relaxes tense muscles.

Three things you can hear
Notice three distinct sounds—near or far.
It might be your breathing, a ticking clock, or distant traffic.
Purpose: Encourages mindful listening and softens the mental noise of anxious thoughts.

Two things you can smell
Identify two scents in your environment.
If you can’t notice any, take a slow inhale of something familiar (coffee, soap, lotion).
Purpose: Activating smell pathways can quickly signal safety and calm to the brain.

One thing you can taste
Pay attention to one taste in your mouth—gum, water, toothpaste, or simply the natural taste of your breath.
Purpose: Finishes the sequence with full sensory awareness.

Using the 5‑4‑3‑2‑1 method takes about one to two minutes. It’s especially helpful during anxiety spikes, panic attacks, or moments of dissociation, grounding you gently in the “here and now.”

Broken Trust, Broken Heart: Understand Why Close People Disappoint Us.

Many of us have experienced moments when someone close lets us down. A friend cancels plans at the last minute, a family gathering happens without you, or you learn that someone you trusted has spoken about you in ways that hurt. When disappointment comes from those closest to us, the pain can feel especially deep.

In these moments, it can help to pause and take a slow breath. Mindfulness encourages us to simply notice what we are feeling—sadness, frustration, or confusion—without judging ourselves for it. These emotions often arise because we care deeply about the relationship.

Our closest relationships involve trust, time, and vulnerability. When expectations are not met, it may feel personal. Yet recognising the hurt can also remind us how much we value connection.

Certain situations often bring these feelings to the surface. Repeatedly cancelled plans may make us feel unimportant. Being left out of gatherings can raise questions about belonging. Discovering that a private conversation was shared may shake our sense of trust. In each case, our minds can quickly create painful stories about what the situation means.

A mindful approach invites us to slow down before reacting. Taking a moment to breathe, reflect, or write down our thoughts can help us process the experience more calmly. When the time feels right, an honest conversation using gentle “I” statements can open understanding rather than conflict.

It is also helpful to remember that people sometimes disappoint us because of their own challenges or misunderstandings. While this does not erase the hurt, it can soften anger and create space for compassion.

Disappointment, though painful, can offer quiet insight. It helps us understand our needs, values, and boundaries. The same heart that feels hurt is also capable of deep love. With mindfulness and self-compassion, these experiences can guide us toward relationships that truly honour our trust.

Step Back From The Tech

I recently read a report that suggested that today’s children may have amassed over 60.000 hours of screen time by the age of 30!! This report caused me to ponder the outcomes that could arise within the individual, from such a massive exposure to today’s technology. The sheer reach of the internet has allowed global societies to connect with each other in way’s we never previously dreamed possible. Whilst this has provided some incredibly positive outcomes, it is also contributing to a plethora of devastating impacts on society.

Pre internet generations gained their wisdom and knowledge through the power of positive parenting, schooling, reading and communication within our communities. We would receive information that we would then decipher, critique, retain or dispel, dependent upon our instinct or gut feel. We could or would take time to absorb what we learnt, without feeling bombarded by this information. Today’s generations are so confronted by all forms of media that they barely have time to breath before the next upload or download hits them.

We know from experience the power advertising has upon the decisions we make as consumers, but have we considered the sublime messaging that we, and our children are confronted with every minute, of every hour spent online? My concern for the younger generations is that they will become so indoctrinated by the power of technology that they will lose the ability to think for themselves, intuitively.

Society has developed over the centuries through our human ability to think, rationalise and make judgement via our “inner senses,” which have ironically brought us to this point in time. My hope is that as humans, we don’t trade our intuition for complete faith in www. It is imperative that we step back from the tech as often as possible, breath, focus on what is happening in each moment and place extreme faith in our human ability to love, communicate, feel joy and happiness rather than becoming slaves to the machine.

Breath To Heal

Whilst breathwork is currently undergoing a renaissance through the explosion of wellness awareness, it has been practiced throughout the world for centuries by indigenous cultures who were acutely connected through spiritual belief. And rightly so, as it is an incredibly powerful, inbuilt tool to both energize and calm the mind and body.

When you take the time to slow down your frantic daily patterns and allow space for calmness and silence, you create the opportunity to witness and experience the frenetic pattern of your breathing. When caught in the grind of today’s pace of life, we aren’t aware of the shallowness of our breathing and therefore the impact that can have on numerous areas of our health.

Peer reviewed studies show that our physiology is directly affected by our breathing patterns, which in turn creates either issues or benefits over time, dependent upon how we breath. Many are aware of using their breath as their gateway to meditation, but there are many other ways that our breath can improve our mental and physical health, and it is purely a matter of making yourself aware of them through research and practice. Our body has the ability to reduce or heal many of the ailments we suffer, and by simply taking time to educate ourselves through the copious quantities of resources available at our fingertips, we can set ourselves on a path that doesn’t always require ubiquitous medications and doctors’ fees.

Through awareness and understanding, we find growth, confidence and the ability to smile, regardless of what your day delivers.

The Value of Authenticity

With the speed at which technology is expanding and advancing, it is not uncommon for us to feel a little bewildered and left wondering if we are somehow being left behind in this never-ending race.

Alongside the obvious advantages that we now enjoy in everyday life, such as instantaneous gratification received through being able to purchase anything you desire and having it delivered directly to your door, often in a matter of hours, comes the downside impacts of social media and the dumbing down of human intelligence through the advent of artificial intelligence. With the good comes the bad, and more than ever we are seeing a society that seems ill equipped to deal with the negative side of this new technological age.

The advent of technologies such as AI programs that can ghost write essays or write an entire book, self-driving vehicles and robotics fulfilling roles from warehouse picking and packing to intricate medical procedures, is seen as a convenience that can remove the mundane from our lives and make life easier. The counter to this is that it has often made us lazier and unable to master the basics of everyday living.

A downside of this progressive lifestyle is that we are losing our authenticity through not having to observe, understand and complete tasks ourselves. The value of such authenticity is never more pronounced than when we encounter a problem or difficulty in which we must use our intuition, knowledge and experience to reach a resolution. The feeling of self-achievement and pride in solving a problem cannot be replicated by artificial intelligence.

Remaining true to your morals and beliefs, accepting who you are and where you stand in this world, and giving and feeling love and gratitude will go a long way to helping you deal with the incredible technological advances that are going to continue well into the future. Embrace everything this wonderful life offers you.

Flick The Switch

As we approach the end of 2024, I’m reminded of the tradition many hold of creating New Year resolutions. This time provides us with a symbolic opportunity to wipe the slate clean, correct the areas in which we may have gone off track throughout the past year, and provide ourselves with the inspiration to start again.

Often this involves plans to change our diet, our home or work environment, lifestyle, and even our relationships. We become highly enthused with the thought of improving our body shape, our weight, our employment and even our living environment. This passion generally lasts for a month or two before we fall back into our regular patterns, falling into the trap of grinding out our days feeling a little despondent or disillusioned.

Something we tend to miss is the importance of taking a fully rounded or wholistic approach to making lasting life changes. We are excited by the romantic notion of changing those areas of our lives that aren’t providing us with satisfaction, but we aren’t fully invested in doing all the work that will make those changes a reality. We lack commitment, which in turn eventually leads to failure.

When I talk of a wholistic approach, I’m referring to the alignment of mind, body and spirit. We require the trilogy to be in sync to allow full and permanent change. If we aren’t putting the work in on all three of these areas, we can’t expect to experience the fulfillment of our goal. By strengthening these areas, we give ourselves the greatest opportunity to find true balance and harmony, both inside and out.

Often, via the socials, I read of peoples battles to overcome the constant hassle that life throws at them. They get to the end of the calendar year and feel proud that they have made it through another, and rightfully so. When we realise that our mind, via our ego, will most often provide us with a negative slant to situations, we can understand why we are constantly in battle. Every situation has a positive or negative outcome, depending how we choose to view or label it. But once we become aware that by simply flicking the switch and choosing to have a positive outlook as our default, our circumstances miraculously change. Create constant sunshine in your life by choosing happiness, gratitude and a positive view, and watch 2025 become your favourite year!!! Happy New Year.

The Price of Not Letting Go

Though the scenarios are vast and often quite complicated, the outcome remains the same.

The price of not letting go is far too high, and lacks value, when we rationalise the outcomes resulting from our inability to recover from the pain of rejection. It may be that you were overlooked for a promotion, the breakdown of an intimate relationship or a close friendship, or having been left off the team when you had high expectations of being involved. The thought of rejection plays havoc with our emotions and can lead to catastrophic outcomes when we act mindlessly and make decisions to seek revenge or retaliate.

No one escapes rejection, but understanding how it affects us offers us the opportunity to lessen its impact. Once again, it’s the triggering of our ego that causes the problem, and it’s a problem that most of us fail to deal with throughout our lifetime. Our ego promotes negative response and causes us to take a defensive attitude when we find rejection offensive. We do this through judging a situation as negative, rather than taking a neutral stance whereby we can view the outcome wholistically, looking at all sides or viewpoints.

Rather than using judgement, try acceptance. Understand that life occurs independently of our wishes and desires, and through acceptance of that, we can save ourselves and others the heartache we produce through negative action. Reflect on how often you have reacted negatively to what you judged as “bad news” and try to recall the pain or discomfort it caused through your inability to let it go. Now expand on the greater quality of life you could experience if you could learn to replace judgement with acceptance, and only utilise your ego for positive experiences. Let it go, move on, live life!!

The Absolute Importance of Resilience

Living through the transitional phases of education over the decades, many of us have experienced the monumental changes that have occurred. None more so, than how we present the written word. The hilarity expressed by children and grandchildren when hearing the beginning of my school life involved writing on a small, handheld slate (blackboard) with various coloured chalks, progressed to learning to handwrite in a copybook, and finding myself now punching keys to create words that materialize on a computer monitor, is quite sobering.

We have come such a long way in such a relatively short space of time, alas, to the detriment of a major factor in human growth, resilience. Remembering those early years of spontaneous play, exploration, inquisitiveness and all out daring, rekindles warm memories. They embody times where we evolved through education, knowledge handed down from parents, grandparents, relatives and community, and of responsibility for your actions demanded from all those previously mentioned, as well as the law. We readily engaged with each other through school, play, sport and cultural activities, and through that, developed bonds and gained experience. We were encouraged to “have a go”, and if we failed, we were encouraged to try again.

Often the bar felt like it was set quite high, but grit, tenacity and determination afforded us the opportunity to reach a standard. If not, we at least gained improvement. Goals were set, hard work and effort resulted in rewards that weren’t always viewed or praised by others to pique our egos, but most importantly we gained that inner feeling of self-satisfaction. We had set out to achieve something, and we did it. We developed and gained resilience.

One of the saddest aspects of being involved in the coaching business, I find, is encountering clients, particularly those of a relatively young age. who suffer from a lack of resilience. In a world that now attempts to shield us from hurt and raises an expectation of having everything available at our fingertips the instant we desire it, we have drowned an extremely important human element. Usually, it is the breakdown of that first serious relationship that triggers a tornado of emotions, sending those impacted into a complete spiral. It is here that resilience plays such an important role in allowing ourselves to find balance, to find our feet, and to gradually ascend from the depths to find new light ahead. Having developed skills from a young age, that were learned through loss, rejection, lack of opportunity due to location, finances or transport etc, engenders the ability to handle these same impacts at later stages of our lives. If we’ve never been allowed to fall down, how will we know how to stand up when it really matters?

Losing Our Way

Is it just me, or are others feeling that this amazing planet on which we reside, is facing unmitigated destruction due to the delusional and egotistical mindsets of a number of world leaders? I am constantly astounded by comments from people who should strive to function at the highest level possible, displaying the most ordinary of human traits, to further their ambitions of grandeur, at the expense of all others.

I say delusional because there is no other way to describe the actions of those who feel it is their right to take what they want, regardless of the cost or consequence of their actions, to the detriment of all others. The gift we receive in being born into the human race is not one which we are entitled to waste or treat with disdain, nor one that elevates us above others.

To immerse yourself in the wonder and beauty of this incredible planet allows us to feel the insignificance of our individual self, yet at the same time creates a feeling of invincibility when standing atop a mountain or swimming in the vastness of an ocean. The emotion that envelops us during an intimate interaction with nature is a privilege we receive through the human experience. It is a joy that we alone absorb, and one that allows us to feel significant.

How then do we feel entitled to be the destroyer of such magnificence? If we take a moment to realise how reliant we are upon each other to navigate our way through each day, we would see the futility and insanity of such actions. Think about how many people are involved in the process of providing us with a meal, clothing, shelter or health care and you soon realise how interdependent we are upon each other. We are a race that was created to support each other for the benefit of all, without exclusion. To think otherwise is a sure sign that we are rapidly losing our way. We must lift our game and it begins with respect.

Regaining Your Feet

One of the questions I am asked through my coaching business is, ” How can I ever recover from heartbreak?”

I’m sure there would not be too many of us who haven’t suffered the traumatic experience of having our heart broken, be that through the ending of a relationship or the passing of a loved one. Not only do we experience acute emotional pain, but we are impacted physically, mentally and even on a spiritual basis when we start to question our established beliefs.

The old adage that time heals is very true, but in the moment, we are feeling destroyed and cannot bear the thought of having to wait for some future moment to begin to feel whole again.

The common trait that occurs once we are impacted by this pain, is to cast our mind back to the thoughts of times shared and the wonderful experiences we created together, but ultimately the reality bites when we realise the finality of those times. We understand that we’ll never have those amazing experiences again, and that is extremely painful.

I believe the path through these times is initially, the path of acceptance. Accepting that those beautiful memories will always be available to us, but that at this present time that phase of our life has closed, and we move forward to whatever the next phase holds.

Acceptance allows us closure, and present moment awareness ensures we don’t continually live in a mindset of past thought. By focusing on our life at this very moment, and continuing to do so, we don’t allow room for an out-of-control mind to continually drag us back to our painful past.

Whilst there are no magical cures to appease emotional pain and hardship, practicing present moment living will assist you in regaining your feet.

Trauma Affects Our Body and Mind.

Anyone who has been affected by a significant degree of trauma in their lives can no doubt attest to the impact it has had on their mind. The process of our mind defaulting to negative thought at even the slightest hint of an adverse condition or situation, creates disharmony and an unsettled feeling within. Can we even begin to imagine the intensity of those emotions on those suffering PTSD? Our mind has the ability to continually switch between a variety of thoughts, mostly without us even being aware this is happening, and therefore leaving us vulnerable to the differing emotions that follow these thoughts. We are constantly held hostage to these situations, yet the majority of mankind has failed to even question why this is occurring, let alone take action to prevent it.

Aligned with the suffering our mind undergoes during such times, is the battering our body is subjected to, again without our awareness or understanding. Trauma lies deep within our physical structure, impacting us on many levels, and often manifesting itself in life threatening diseases or prolonged illness. Unfortunately, we have no education in place to increase awareness of this process, particularly in our formative years where it would have the greatest impact. Whilst medical research into PTSD accelerated after the Vietnam War and expanded exponentially into the late 80’s through the advent of anti-depressant medications such as Prozac, it was only treating the symptoms, but often left patients feeling heavily sedated and lacking energy and motivation. If we are suffering such unmitigated pain throughout mind and body, it is essential to find a solution that allows us to function wholly throughout our day, rather than to be left to wallow in our misunderstood misery.

At this point, the only available solution is to embed yourself in the present moment. Allowing our mind to regress to past thoughts of traumatic events leaves us open to untold suffering. By acutely focusing on what is happening in THIS VERY MOMENT, we don’t allow any past thoughts in. We remain seated in what is happening to us in the present, and we are able to function perfectly and make necessary adjustments to solicit positive outcomes, or at the very least control and limit the damage, by being present in the situation. There is absolutely no benefit in introducing past pain into the present, and expecting any other outcome, than greater suffering. Medical research over decades supports mindfulness and present moment awareness as being hugely beneficial in combatting the impacts of trauma. For your health’s sake, give presence a try. You can thank me later!!
