Let’s talk healthy vs unhealthy eating behaviours. Like any relationship, there are red and green flags that should act as a cue to evaluate your relationship with food and eating. You may have ignored these warning signs when it came to your ex, but we don’t want any toxic relationships over here! Reflect, be aware and if you need help or want to discuss these further, reach out to an Accredited Practising Dietitian who can assist you. ⁣⁣

🚩 Unhealthy Eating Behaviours 🚩⁣⁣
1). Cutting out foods or whole foods groups without a medical diagnosis. ⁣⁣
2). Weighing food and counting calories or macronutrients for extended periods of time.⁣⁣
3). Labelling food with an emotional attachment or judgement.⁣⁣
4). Feeling anxious about eating at social events.⁣⁣
5). Ignoring hunger cues by smoking, exercising or drinking water to suppress appetite.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
✅ Healthy Eating Behaviours ✅ ⁣⁣
1). Eating a variety of different foods, including foods from all food groups (fruit, veg, lean meat or meat alternatives, grains and cereals and last but not least, dairy or dairy alternatives)⁣⁣
2). Eating appropriate amounts and types of food to support your physical, mental, social & emotional well-being and development. ⁣⁣
3). Practising mindful eating. ⁣⁣
4). Eating regularly and including protein, carbohydrates and fats at every meal.⁣⁣
5). Identifying and obeying signals of fullness and hunger. ⁣⁣

Does the idea of talking to a health professional about your diet make you anxious? Are you worried about being judged for your dietary choices or are you worried that the consultation will be a lecture highlighting the things that you feel you need to change? ⁣

Well, rest assured that none of the above are on the agenda during a consultation. Yes, we will talk in depth about the foods you eat. Yes, we will work with you to set some goals to help you to achieve your goals, but judgment and shaming has no place within our scope of practise. ⁣

I dream of a day when anxiety around food is no longer a thing. A day when people care more about what they need to add to their diet rather than what they need to restrict. A day when success is measured in favourable health outcomes, overall wellbeing, good nutrition-related biochemistry and enjoyment of all foods, rather than a number displayed on a scale. A day when we will learn to live life to its fullest without the fear of showing our lumps and bumps, a day when we won’t put off activities until we’re “shredded enough” but rather lean into opportunities right where we are now. If you are ready to become friends with food, ready to receive some no-BS nutrition advice tailored to meeting you where you are now, stay tuned. I’ve got something in store for you!⁣

Geez Louise, I never thought I’d be writing this. When I found out I was going to be spending 15 weeks in Outback Queensland, I proper lost it. I’m talking bawling my eyes out for days, wondering how I’d ever survive without a coastal body of water near by. .nay.nay can vouch for this. Flash forward 20 weeks and I’m a different gal 🤠

My time in Mount Isa was literally the most fun I’ve had since moving to Australia. While I’m pretty sure a little romance on the side had something to do with it, the actual placement gave me opportunities that I’d never see in a metro hospital. I made so many friends, my social calendar was absolutely blooming and I learnt to appreciate things like shops being open on Sundays and a good sunset. Plus, employers LOVE rural experience!⁣⁣

A mere three weeks left as a uni student and my excitement levels could not be higher. Placement has taught me so much, I’ve had the time of my life and I’m so excited to be a Dietitian. I’m even more excited for a change of scenery and a fresh start in Perth 🎉⁣⁣

Ideally your plate should include: ⁣
🥦 Half a plate of non-starchy vegetables ⁣
🍗 A quarter plate of good quality protein (don’t forget about those good plant based proteins too!) ⁣
🥔 A quarter plate of low GI carbohydrates ⁣
🥑 A small amount of healthy fat (used either in cooking or drizzled on top) ⁣

Your arms feel like jelly, your hair is an absolute mess and you can feel the tan lines coming on already. But how do you refuel after a big surf session? 🤔⁣

1. Rehydrate💧: Might sound a bit odd considering you’re surrounded by water but being out in the ocean for hours on end is dehydrating stuff! ⁣
2. Electrolytes 🧂: While you’re baking away in the beautiful autumn sun, you’re losing precious electrolytes, some of which may need replacing on an especially hot day or after a big session⁣
3. Carbs 🥔: All that paddling depletes your body’s freely available glucose, meaning that your body has been working hard converting stored sugars (glycogen) into more glucose that’s ready to be used by your cells⁣
4. Protein🍳: Feel those jelly arms? You’re going to need some protein to keep those muscles healthy, strong and growing! ⁣
5. Timing ⏱: Sports Dietitians Australia recommends having a good snack containing both carbohydrates and protein 60-90min after a session ⁣

Mentally I’m here - enjoying the sunshine, clear water and some fun waves with .nutrition 🏄🏼‍♀️. ⁣
The weather has been pretty miserable here on the GC and I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get to spend some much needed time in the ocean this long weekend! 😔 ⁣

Luckily I’ve still got 3 weeks left before I head back to the country for my community placement in Roma 🤠 ⁣

Whether dawn patrol is your thing or you’re hoping for a bit of a sleep in before catching some waves, having some food before you go can keep those muscles working for longer and hopefully, help you catch more waves! 🌊⁣

Sports Dietitians Australia recommends a meal containing good quality carbohydrates prior to a session to ensure long lasting energy. Some of my favourite pre-surf snacks include , , fruit free muesli or muesli bars, .bakehouse ⁣grainy type bread and of course, the classic 🤙🏼

Officially past the halfway mark of my university placement and could not be happier with my placement experience so far 🎉 ⁣

Some highlights of the week include:⁣
* Getting some incredibly positive feedback from my supervisors 🥰⁣
* Seeing some beautiful patients and becoming inspired to up-skill in the complex area of weight management 🤓⁣
* Having one of my patients ask me for a business card and an outpatient appointment 🥺❤️ ⁣

Now it’s time to wind down for the weekend and hopefully catch some good waves 🏄🏼‍♀️🌊 ⁣⁣⁣

Don’t get me wrong, I love a quiet night in with a good face mask and a cheeki glass of wine 🍷🙋🏼‍♀️⁣

But sometimes we need a little more than that. Self-care could be spending some time preparing healthy meals to have on hand during the week. It could be paying a bit more for a gym membership you’ll actually use. It could be making an appointment with a dietitian or another health professional to get help instead of trusting Dr Google or an influencer. ⁣

Health is about so much more than just getting your 5 servings of vegetables per day. You could have a “perfect” diet, but unless all aspects of your well-being are being addressed, you simply can’t be the healthiest version of yourself 💁🏼‍♀️
