Nap transitions can be tricky and require patience and persistence. If your baby is currently having 4 naps and is roughly between 5-6 months you may need to consider dropping that fourth nap. Here are some things to look out for;

1. They are constantly fighting the 4th nap

2. You may need to skip the 4th nap

3. They are happy and content even if they dont have the 4th nap

4. They are not showing any tired signs before that 4th nap

5. You might see that they are fighting the earlier naps a bit more this will be a sign that you can increase the awake windows

Cat napping can start anywhere from birth to 6 months. I am going to share some tips and tricks on how you can encourage your little one to stretch those sleeps out longer and longer.
1. Routine in place
2. Watch your baby and learn their tired cues
3. Put them down later
4. Put them down earlier to avoid them being overtired
5. If they wake wait 60-90 seconds before you go in, if they don’t cry and happily go back to sleep then leave them

Remember they will stay asleep the way they feel asleep, so if they fall asleep on the breast they will wake up and want the breast again to go back to sleep and for comfort. I always suggest putting them in the cot with a gentle Pat and watch them peacefully drift off to sleep.

During this phase they will be having NON REM sleep which basically means they will wake easily to noises, sounds and smells.

If you need help to settle your little one please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Starting childcare this year?
This comes along with many mixed emotions. There will be separation anxiety, fear of strangers and that fact that you are not caring for your little one.
However, it will be ok, firstly you must feel comfortable with the Centre, the educators and the overall running of the centre. As an early childhood teacher myself putting my son into kindy was a huge step for me, I took the time to visit almost every centre on the Gold Coast, I asked a lot of questions. I already knew the regulations and knew which centres are Exceeding but I still wasn’t afraid to ask. When visiting the different centres I always need to feel the warmth and caring nature.
So my big boy has now officially moved in to Toddler room and couldn’t love it enough, some things to consider when starting;
~ lots of positivity
~ go for morning play dates prior to them starting
~ Talk about going to kindy and making new friends
~ Only start them for short visits or even half days
~ Once they settle start to increase it slowly so they will end up having a sleep at kindy
~ Tell them you will be back after lunch
~ Make sure you pack their special comforter or dummy
~ At home make sure you log in to whatever platform they use (story park, xplor) and look at the photos of their day and talk about the other children, what they played with and we will see your teachers again soon.

This is a huge step for most families, my advice is to take it slow and always communicate. Children understand everything you tell them, it will get better but just give it time.

I know when I was pregnant I always had my hospital bag ready and packed by 36 weeks. You can not predict for birth and it is always best to be prepared. Here I have listed a few things to help you for when you are packing your bag. The things that were most helpful were;
~ snacks
~ lemonade (especially after birth as I felt a little light headed)
~ comfortable pjs and clothes
That was all I wanted and after 5 days it was home time, enjoy the hospital stay and remember to ask as many questions as you can before you leave, they are there to help you.

Here I have listed a group of certain foods to avoid while breastfeeding. Certain foods will trigger different babies and this can cause colic. Babies will have increased pain and discomfort and may be very unsettled for a few days. Try to avoid certain foods until you reach 12 weeks of breastfeeding and then gradually introduce one by one.

How to swaddle your baby, if you choose to swaddle your baby please make sure you swaddle them safely.

In the early days and months swaddling is incredibly important and beneficial, they want to feel the warmth and tightness that they felt in the womb. Not only is this going to relax them but it will also teach them that it is ready for bed especially when you are not home in their usual routine and sleep environment.

Please remember incorrect swaddling can lead to hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a condition where the ball and socket joint of the hip does not form properly. Please allow your baby to bend their legs naturally with enough room to move comfortably before swaddling.

Ideas and tips when swaddling your baby;
1. Use a bamboo muslin
This is the best option as it can be tailored to any size, length or shape. Buy a few of these and have them ready to go in the nursery, nappy bag, in the car etc
2. Use correct size sleep suit
3. Make sure the sleep suit is the right temperature
4. When your baby is on the move you must re-access your swaddling technique

The 4 month sleep regression; I like it be known as the 4 month sleep progression.
So what is happening here, basically this is where your child will be going through a growth spurt and changes will be happening, you will notice certain things including;
1. Fussiness
2. Multiple night waking's
3. Less sleep
4. Changes in appetite

So what can we do during this phase, take a deep breath, and remember that sleep regressions are temporary. Your baby is likely frustrated with their fast growing body and mind. They’re now more engaged and aware of their surroundings, including you. Here are a few tips to try during this phase;
1. Fully feed your baby during the day
2. Introduce ‘drowsy but awake’
3. Keep the room dark
4. Establish a routine (if you haven’t already for one)
5. Be flexible and patient

Moving your baby out of the bassinet and into the cot can be a big change for everyone. Below I have helped with a few tips and tricks on how your baby can have a successful move:
1. Make sure that your baby loves their sleep space. In the weeks leading up to the change have them play in the desired sleep space.
2. You can consider putting the bassinet in the cot
3. White noise playing
These are just a few tips if you need more information or help you can send me direct message.

Routine, one of my favourite. With many years working as an Early Childhood Teacher, routine is so important for both babies and children. Not only does it give them a sense of security and stability but it will help infants and toddlers to feel safe and secure in their environment.
So how do you establish a routine;
1. Teach your baby the difference between night and day
2. Introduce a bedtime routine in the early days
3️. Learn to read your baby’s cues
4. Put your baby’s routine first
5. Expect changes during regression periods
6. Adjust your baby’s routine according to age
7. Don’t expect perfection,
Go easy on yourself 🥰
