In your mid-20s, this becomes part of your healthcare.
It’s very important that you do it.

From age 25, cervical screening every 5 years checks for HPV, a common virus most people will have at some point. While HPV often clears naturally, some types can cause cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer if not detected early.

You’ve got options. Both are safe and accurate:
🔬 clinician-collected
🧫 or self-collected (where appropriate)

If the idea makes you feel nervous, that’s completely normal.

As we head into 2026, consider this a gentle reminder to check when you’re due or book in when you’re ready. 🫶

Keeping Your V***a Happy in Summer… ☀️

Christmas in Australia looks very different to the Christmas I grew up with in Canada.

Here on the Gold Coast, it usually means summer heat, swimming, beach days, barbecues, and long hours spent in swimmers and activewear.

In peak summer, heat, sweat, moisture and friction from synthetic fabrics can affect v***al and vaginal health. As a gynaecologist, it’s something I see every year in my clinic, particularly around Christmas and throughout the summer months.

Here are a few simple, often overlooked ways to support v***a care and keep the v***al area comfortable in hot weather.

If you’re experiencing ongoing symptoms such as itching, irritation, discharge, odour, or discomfort, it’s important to seek medical advice rather than self-treat.

This women’s-health myth might surprise you…

I’m often asked whether we need a period every month. And the truth is, unless we’re trying to conceive, a monthly bleed isn’t medically necessary.

When we’re using contraception that safely thins the uterine lining, we’re not “building up” anything inside the body. So choosing to skip a bleed, or having lighter or less frequent periods, can be completely safe depending on your method and your health needs.

Every body is different, and your cycle should support your life… not the other way around. If skipping a period feels right for you, it’s worth having a conversation about your options.

This information is general only and not individual medical advice. Always chat to your own healthcare provider about what’s right for you.

This is my aunty Rita (middle), my mum, and me in Hawaii earlier this year. Some of my patients may have heard me talk about her.

Just over a year ago, Rita was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). She had always been a very active person, so the diagnosis came as a shock. Early symptoms can be vague and non-specific. In her case, they were first thought to be osteoarthritis and later carpal tunnel syndrome, which meant it took time for the full picture to become clear.

Today, Rita’s day-to-day abilities are significantly affected, a powerful reminder of how life can change in ways we never expect.

I’m sharing this as a gentle reminder that if something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth looking a little deeper. Most symptoms are common and harmless, but occasionally they’re not, and persistence matters.

That said, I’m also a believer in destiny, that life takes us where it was always meant to go. While illness is never easy, it often brings clarity about what truly matters. We don’t know what’s around the corner, which is why living fully and valuing the present is so important.

On my way back to Australia after visiting her, I was reminded just how precious life is. 🤍

One of the most common misconceptions about obstetricians is that we’re always looking to intervene.

In reality, I often think of my role in labour like a lifeguard at the beach. I’m there, watching the water and respecting its power and rhythm, not interfering, just staying present and ready if something changes. Many labours progress well with patience and support.

One of the greatest privileges in birth care is having both the space for labour to unfold and the reassurance of modern medicine and skilled doctors there when needed.

Today marks the first day of summer and the beginning of the festive season. For many pregnant women, this can be a beautiful but demanding time of year.

Pregnancy makes the body more sensitive to heat, and in warm climates like the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers, it’s common to feel more tired, lightheaded, or uncomfortable.

If you notice dizziness, overheating, or unusual fatigue, take a moment where you can to hydrate, rest and cool down. And if symptoms don’t settle, please seek medical advice.

Let this summer be about small acts of care, listening to your body, and giving yourself the same compassion you give everyone else.

General information only. Please speak with your healthcare provider if you have concerns.

Your bond with your baby is your own, and it’s honestly okay if it doesn’t show up straight away.

So many parents expect that instant “click”, but the truth is not everyone feels it immediately, and that doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Bonding can grow slowly, gently, over time, just like any relationship that matters.

If you’re feeling unsure or something just doesn’t feel right, please talk to someone you trust. A friend, a family member, your GP or your midwife, anyone who can listen without judgement. Opening up not only helps you feel supported, but it can also help you recognise early signs of postnatal depression if they’re there.

Being a new mum is incredibly hard, and you’re doing so much better than you think. Be kind to yourself.

I’ve done a lot of hard things in my life, especially as a surgeon… so I assumed pouring a celebratory drink would be relatively easy. But it turns out, it takes a little more finesse than I expected 😂

My weekend was spent perfecting the pour in preparation for our Wahini House grand opening tomorrow.

Here’s to learning, laughing, and trying again…
