What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is a type of expressive therapy that takes the creative processes of art to improve wellbeing. Art Therapy is a way to express through the exploration of different mediums such as pencils, pastels, textas, chalk, paints, clay, collage, things found in nature - the resources are endless. Some people read the word art and are daunted, no art experience is needed, if you can draw a stick figure or a squiggly line you can do art therapy. Self expression through art is a way to explore and express emotions giving the individual self understanding and insight. Transpersonal psychology combined with Art Therapy acknowledges you as your most effective healer.

FAQ'S ABOUT ART THERAPY

WHAT IS ART THERAPY? A non invasive gentle process that uses art as a way to express a range of emotions. A process that allows the individual to gain insight. Integrated with psychotherapy and is based on a solid foundation of traditional psychological models. BUT I CAN'T DRAW No art ability is required, if you can draw a stick figure or a squiggly line you can engage in art therapy. HOW CAN ART THERAPY HELP ME? Bringing clarity Finding insight Creating clear intentions Accessing your subconscious mind Increasing wellbeing Breaking negative cycles Dissipating stress Getting in touch with your intuition Cutting through overthinking Increasing self awareness Providing you with tools to discover your own inner resources and strength WHAT DOES AN ART THERAPY SESSION INVOLVE? Do you have a goal or goals you would like to work towards? In each session the therapist will ask if there is a particular issue you would like to explore. A guided meditation may be offered to help ground you and get you ready for the art making. During meditation a theme may pop up and the session can be based around that theme. If the individual needs direction the therapist will offer an art directive to begin the process. No analysis of your art work is performed, the insight and interpretation is yours alone and guided by the therapist. Children usually get straight into the art making, while adults may need the time to explore with different mediums and encouragement to express and break through any blocks of using art and get you ready for the art making. The creative process assists in communicating what can't be described or said aloud. Imagery is a language in itself, a very specific language is made available for you when we discuss your art (the language of your subconscious mind). It guides you to see what needs attention and what is most important in your world. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING? Just yourself and an open mind. All materials are provided. All art creations are yours to keep. OUR PROMISE Hold space for you Encourage you when you feel stuck Provide different mediums for your experiential session BE authentic Refer to other services if needed Provide a space where you feel supported Adhere to confidentiality Continue professional development.
