So many women over 40 find themselves exhausted, running on coffee and carbs, forgetting simple things like words or names, or feeling like they have totally lost the plot.
The tricky part is that burnout, perimenopause, and depression often show up with the same symptoms. Annoying things like brain fog, low mood, poor sleep, and that relentless tiredness that just will not budge, no matter how much you rest.
But here is what most people do not realise…
These conditions do not just overlap in their symptoms. They often stem from the same underlying causes.
Long term stress, hormonal changes, unresolved trauma, and chronic inflammation are all part of the picture. But the stories we tell ourselves and the beliefs we pick up along the way, often from childhood, can quietly drive these struggles even further.
Many women in this stage of life find themselves thinking:
🏃♀️➡️ “I don’t have time to stop, I just have to keep going.”
Believing you don’t have time to stop often keeps you stuck in survival mode, and makes it hard to rest or ask for help.
🧑🧑🧒🧒 “I need to look after everyone else first.”
Caring for others becomes second nature, and your own wellbeing slips to the bottom of the list. Self care and boundaries feel selfish, even when you are running on empty.
⏳ “It’s just part of getting older.”
It is easy to chalk up exhaustion, brain fog, or low mood to age, so you keep soldiering on instead of reaching out for the support you deserve.
These beliefs, stories, and patterns do not just affect how you feel. They can actually keep you stuck in a cycle of exhaustion and self blame.
The good news is that the path to feeling better does not have to be complicated or overwhelming.
Simple, sustainable lifestyle changes like prioritising quality sleep, gentle movement, nourishing food, and real downtime can help your body, mind, and nervous system find balance again.
But here is the thing. The physical side is only part of the puzzle.
When I went through burnout a few years ago, I realised firsthand that true recovery takes more than just physical changes. For lasting change, those unhelpful beliefs and patterns that led to burnout in the first place need to be resolved.
When you start to shift your habits, beliefs, and the stories you tell yourself, your energy, mood, and confidence can truly transform. It is about giving yourself permission to rest, set boundaries, and actually put your needs on the list without guilt. Because you can’t give from an empty cup.
If you are ready to break the cycle, fill up your cup and feel like yourself again, you are not alone and you do not have to figure it out by yourself.
My next 12 week Burnout Recovery Program is starting soon. It is designed to help you address these overlaps at the root and build practical strategies for real, lasting change. We kick off on Monday and there is still time to join.
