The Mindfulness Hub

The Mindfulness Hub Mindfulness Based Programs and Workshops for Young People on the Gold Coast.

Research has shown us and continues to highlight, the benefits of mindfulness and self-care when embedded as a daily practice. Whilst working as a classroom teacher and welfare teacher, Elizabeth found first-hand how beneficial taking proactive steps for young people’s wellbeing is for their overall health, resilience and success. However, she also discovered, like any other skill taught to our students, that there is a growing need for teens to be shown what mindfulness and self-care can look like in their world. Often, they’re told of the benefits but don’t actually know where to begin or what tools they can use to practice self-care. Furthermore, it is easy in our busy, fast paced lives to forget to be purposeful in our practice. The Mindfulness Hub has been created to provide a safe and nurturing space to teach and facilitate these skills. It is aimed at empowering young people and to equip them with knowledge and strategies to build their own self-care ‘toolkit’. This will help foster resilience and empower young people to be their best self as they navigate growing up. To build strong foundations and skills for life and in turn, strong minds and kind hearts. About the founder:
Elizabeth is a qualified high school teacher, with experience teaching in NSW and QLD. She holds a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Graduate Certificate of Counselling. Additionally, she has a Bachelor of Business and prior to becoming a teacher, worked as a manager in 5-star resorts. Her professional and personal experiences have shaped her into a highly intuitive and kind leader, with an excellent ability to build rapport with people from all walks of life. Elizabeth has a lived experience of mental ill health, and she actively participates in her own self-care and mindfulness practices regularly. This lived experience gives her insight, empathy and compassion in her teaching and counselling practices. In addition to running the Mindfulness Hub, Elizabeth works as a facilitator for LIVIN, delivering presentations about Mental Health and Su***de prevention to schools and workplaces.

I’ve just returned from an absolutely awesome holiday to Bali and the most perfect Instagram shot.

But what this picture doesn’t show, is the fear in my boyfriend as he faces his fear of heights, my lingering cough that’s persisted for 4 weeks now after battling Bronchitis and caused very sleepless nights for the first week of our holiday.

It also doesn’t show the challenges thrown at my family in the last month - dealing with my grandmother and her declining memory as she battles dementia; the sudden illness and subsequent passing of my uncle while I was away; and the grief of watching my sibling’s marriage breakdown and the particular impact on my nephew.

So as we round off Mental Health awareness month here in QLD, I am sharing this with you as a reminder that sometimes, it seems everyone is living the perfect Instagram life. We find ourselves comparing and feeling like we’re falling short. But really, we’re all just doing the best we can.

It’s okay to admit that you’re struggling and reach out for support. It’s okay to ask for help. To have a sh*tty day or to sit with difficult feelings.

Make sure you’re taking the time to look after yourself, each and every day.

Start small!
This time last year I was approaching 2 months post wrist surgery. Success looked like being able to move my fingers to touch my thumb and learning to pick up pieces of foam with the pinch grip. Life was measured by how many degrees I could bend my wrist backwards and forwards and if I could rotate my hand to the left and right. “Palm up, palm down” and I was in a wrist brace, unless I was massaging the wounds and giving them some sun.

I set goals with my hand therapist which were:
- Be able to write again & journal
- Be able to cook meals
- Do push ups on the ground (kinda random)

In October 2022, Push ups started as placing my hands on the wall and applying pressure. Bending my wrist like that was hard work! And tiring 🫢 Then over time they became wall walks, then push ups against the wall..

Earlier this year we celebrated doing 20 push ups on the ground in a minute. Today I managed to do 39.

I won’t ever be a fitness guru but I’m pretty happy with that.

If you’re wanting to start a self care routine and it seems overwhelming or too much work, just start small!
