Swallowing is something we rarely think aboutuntil it becomes difficult. In Parkinson’s, dysphagia is common and can lead to serious complications. Recognising the signs and working with a speech pathologist can help preserve safety and dignity.

When people think of Parkinson’s disease, they often think of tremors or movement issues.

But for many, the most life-altering symptoms are the ones we don’t see, slowed thinking, memory lapses, trouble concentrating, or difficulty planning day-to-day tasks.

These cognitive symptoms stem from changes in key brain areas, not just the movement centers. Recognizing them early makes a world of difference.

Ascent Speech Pathology offers comprehensive assessments to address cognitive health.

These four are known as the “cardinal symptoms” of Parkinson’s.

Surprisingly, weakness isn’t on the list. That’s because it’s not a direct symptom, but rather a side effect of reduced movement.

Parkinson’s disease is often misunderstood as a condition that makes people “weak.” But clinically speaking, weakness is not a primary symptom of Parkinson’s.

Instead, it’s the lack of full movement, small steps, small gestures, and even a softer voice—that leads to muscle underuse and eventual deconditioning.

At Ascent Speech Pathology, we believe in educating our patients and their families with clear, evidence-based insights like this. When we understand that reduced activity, not the disease itself, is causing weakness, we can empower clients to take meaningful steps forward.

Knowledge is power!

Ever wonder why movement feels harder with Parkinson’s?

It all starts in the brain.

In Parkinson’s, the automatic motor system, the part that handles habitual movement, gets disrupted due to low dopamine. But here’s the empowering truth: the intentional motor system is still available to you!

With deliberate focus and mindful practice, you can regain more control over your movements than you thought possible. Reference picture: Voice Project
