Today is the inaugural Whooping Cough Day, created by the Immunisation Foundation of Australia to shine a spotlight on the threat of whooping cough and the simple ways people can remain protected.
Whooping cough is a highly infectious and potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause severe, uncontrollable coughing fits and difficulty breathing. Although babies are at greatest risk of severe whooping cough, in Australia, more than half of all confirmed cases occur in adults.
The theme for Whooping Cough Day is November 8. Get Up-To-Date. Vaccinate!
With infections likely to surge during spring and summer, vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and loved ones against this highly contagious disease. Pregnant women, babies from six weeks of age, children and adults are encouraged to stay up-to-date with whooping cough vaccination and boosters.
Check your vaccination status by talking to a GP, pharmacist or by accessing your Immunisation History Statement via the Express Plus Medicare app at https://ow.ly/6iq350Q4SF5
