The vagus nerve is one of the body’s primary communication pathways.

It carries information about what’s happening in the body up to the brain — and sends signals from the brain back to many of our vital organs.

This constant feedback helps the body maintain homeostasis across systems like the heart, lungs and digestive organs.

Research also suggests the vagus nerve plays an important role in how the body responds to stress and inflammation.

Bowen Therapists work with an awareness of these communication systems, recognising that the body is always gathering information and adjusting in response.

Because the body isn’t just a collection of parts.

It’s an ongoing conversation.

We often treat tension as a flaw.

Something to stretch away. Push through. Power past.

But the nervous system doesn’t create tension randomly.

It creates protection. Protection from overload. From instability. From perceived threat — physical or emotional.

The body adapts in the best way it knows how.

Bowen Therapy doesn’t force that protection to drop.

It introduces gentle, precise input — allowing the nervous system to reassess whether it still needs to hold on.

When the system feels safer, it can soften.

And that’s very different from being weak.

Your hands aren’t just part of the job — they ARE the job.

As Bowen Therapists, our technique is gentle… but our bodies still do a lot of work.

A quick reminder to care for the tools you use every day:

• keep your wrists neutral
• move from your legs, not your back
• revisit the positioning taught in class — much of it is designed to support your ergonomics as well as your clients'
• use the pauses to reset your own posture and breath

Small habits = long-term ease in practice.

Look after the tools you rely on every day.
