Please email info@moogoo.com.au - answers here can be restrictive in length but we can give better info through email. The fact that MooGoo even exists is a happy accident. In 2005, the Head of the Herd (Craig Jones) noticed that his mother was using a white paste, intended for use on cows, to help with her Psoriasis. The cream was formulated to help keep the skin on cow’s udders in good condition for milking. Cow’s udders need to be kept soft and supple, not dry and cracked. No one likes an angry cow with sore or cracked udders when it comes time to attach those milking cups. Although it seemed to be working well, the cream was thick and hard to apply. Since his mum didn’t particularly like being lathered in a thick cream made for cows, he took on the task of reformulating it and made up a lighter, non-greasy version. The word “udder” was a bit crass for an old-fashioned “lady” so they referred to it as “MooGoo” (goo for the cows) and the name stuck. Starting a skin care company wasn’t the initial idea, but friends and family kept asking for more of it, and eventually, Craig went into business. Since then MooGoo has grown to over 40 products to help with lots of different skin and scalp problems and sold throughout the world. From dealing with irritable skin and itchy scalps to natural sun care products and a baby range for the little ones. And most recently, a natural dental range. MooGoo’s ingredient philosophy has always remained the same: To make effective products using healthy ingredients, that we are comfortable using on ourselves and our loved ones. Craig continues to be very involved in the business, focusing mostly on formulation and product development.

As you may know, the first MooGoo products were made at home. In fact, many of our products could be made at home yourself, with ingredients available from certain websites. It’s a great way to learn the basics of what goes into a product and why.

However, we sometimes see advertisements saying things like, “We couldn’t find a sunscreen we liked, so we made our own at home.”

Sunscreen, however, is one of those products that really can’t be made safely at home. As the CHOICE testing showed, zinc-based sunscreens are particularly tricky to formulate in a way that provides high protection and stays stable over a two-year lifespan. Zinc tends to clump together over time, and many common ingredients aren’t compatible with it. On top of that, SPF testing is expensive and needs to be done for every single formula change.

So while we love home-made products for many things because they’re healthy and simple, some things like sunscreen and the latest anti-ageing formulas really need a chemist.

At MooGoo, we still make our “home-made” style products (although not at home anymore), and we now have two full-time chemists who develop new products and monitor the quality of everything we make.

The photo below is a flashback to the sad day we had to discard almost a tonne of sunscreen we made last year, along with all the unused Zinc it was made from. We noticed the Zinc in this batch looked different, so out of an abundance of caution, we did some testing on the batch. The results came back at SPF 27 instead of our usual SPF 40, so we immediately disposed of it and began sourcing a new, reliable Zinc supplier. Unfortunately, this meant we were out of stock for most of last summer but we weren’t willing to compromise on quality.

It cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to scrap it all, but we know reputation is forever and quality is vital. And when it comes to sun protection, an under-strength sunscreen is not something to take lightly in our opinion. So when we read the recent news about sunscreens, it’s been hard to make sense of what’s happening.

The good news is our sunscreen is now back and better than ever according to the latest independent SPF tests. (We’ve even got more exciting updates coming soon once the final round of testing is complete!)

We publish our SPF results from independent laboratories (not PCR or in-vitro tests) on our sunscreen page, so everyone can see that our SPF claim stacks up.

By the way, we would have loved to donate that SPF 27 batch, but we were concerned it could be re-sold, and since sunscreen is a therapeutic product, it’s not as simple as repurposing it or risking under-protection. We do, however, donate a lot of other products (especially our Milk Wash) to causes we care about.

Our SPF 40 Clear Zinc Sunscreen is a little thicker, but that’s exactly what helps it achieve its claimed SPF. It's also a great barrier against the dry wind.
