SUPPORTING YOUNG ADULTS AS THEY STEP INTO THE WIDER WORLD

🌱 The transition from the teenage years into adulthood can feel exciting… but also overwhelming. New responsibilities, increased independence, and navigating work, study, and relationships all come at once.

This is where Occupational Therapy (OT) can make a real difference.

At Kids Therapy Station, we support young adults to build the practical life skills and confidence they need to thrive beyond school and into the broader community.
Our approach is individualised, strengths-based, and focused on real-life outcomes.

✨ How OT can help:
• Developing everyday self-care skills like cooking, hygiene, and routines
• Building independence with home tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and budgeting
• Strengthening social and communication skills for friendships, relationships, and community participation
• Preparing for employment with job readiness skills, time management, and workplace expectations
• Practising skills in real environments – at home, in the community, or in the workplace

We know that no two young people are the same. That’s why we tailor our supports to each individual—helping them feel capable, confident, and ready for the next stage of life.

Our mobile and telehealth service means we can work with young people in the environments where they feel most comfortable, making learning meaningful and practical.

If you’re supporting a young adult who could benefit from building independence and life skills, we’d love to help 🤍

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY - SUPPORTING TEENAGERS TO NAVIGATE TRANSITIONS AND BUILD THE SKILLS THEY NEED FOR ADULTHOOD

At Kids Therapy Station we focus on helping teens engage in the “occupations” of daily life—the things that matter most to them. This could include anything from managing schoolwork, building friendships, and regulating emotions, to learning life skills like cooking, shopping, managing money, or preparing for future employment.

Every activity we work on is meaningful and individual. What matters to one teen may be completely different to another, and that’s exactly our approach—personalised, flexible, and relevant to their stage of life.

Some key benefits of Occupational Therapy for teenagers include:
✨ Building independence in daily routines and self-care
✨ Developing organisation, planning and time management skills
✨ Strengthening social confidence and relationship skills
✨ Supporting emotional regulation and coping strategies
✨ Adapting environments or tasks to make everyday life more manageable
✨ Preparing for transitions into further study, work, or adulthood

At Kids Therapy Station, we work alongside teenagers—not to direct them, but to support and empower them. We help them identify their own goals and build the skills to achieve them, at their own pace.

We also work closely with families, providing practical strategies that can be used every day, helping progress continue beyond sessions.

Our mobile service means we support teens in environments where they feel most comfortable—home, school, or out in the community—because real-life practice leads to real-life success.

Our goal is simple: to help teenagers grow into confident, capable young adults who can participate in the life they want to live 💛

Did you know that play is one of the most powerful ways children learn? 🎈

At Kids Therapy Station, we know that a child’s natural “occupation” is to play. It’s how they explore the world, build skills, connect with others and develop confidence.

That’s why play isn’t “just for fun”—it’s a purposeful and highly effective part of Occupational Therapy.

So why does play work so well?

✨ It’s motivating – Children are naturally driven to play, so they’re more engaged, willing to try new things and persist with challenges

✨ It builds real-life skills – Play supports motor skills, emotional regulation, social interaction, problem-solving and independence

✨ It supports development – Play looks different for every child, and we meet them at their developmental stage—whether that’s social games like peek-a-boo and “chase me,” or more complex cooperative play

✨ It creates connection – Play is a powerful way to build relationships, trust and shared attention

✨ It reduces pressure – Play allows children to learn and grow in a safe, enjoyable and low-stress environment

At Kids Therapy Station, we are intentional about how we use play:

✔️ We focus on true play—not just adult-led “activities”—because children are far more motivated when it feels fun and meaningful to them

✔️ We follow each child’s interests and strengths to guide sessions

✔️ We use developmentally appropriate play, starting where the child is at and building new skills over time

✔️ We embed therapy goals into play in a way that feels natural and engaging

✔️ We support families to feel confident in playing and connecting with their child

Play is more than just a tool—it’s the foundation for learning, growth and connection 🌱

Because when therapy feels like play, children don’t just participate… they thrive 💛

STRENGTHS BASED & NEURODIVERSITY AFFIRMING CARE

At Kids Therapy Station, we believe every child is unique—and that their differences are something to celebrate, not fix 💛

That’s why we take a strengths-based, neuro-affirming approach to our Occupational Therapy supports.

All children—regardless of diagnosis, disability or challenges—have a wealth of strengths. Every child sits on their own continuum of abilities, with unique strengths and differences that shape how they participate in the world. We see each child as inherently worthy and valued, just as they are.

So what does this look like in practise?

✨ We complete assessments with a strengths-based lens—not just identifying challenges, but uncovering the abilities, interests and skills that can be used as a foundation for growth

✨ We write neuro-affirming goals—focusing on building independence, confidence and self-advocacy, rather than expecting children to simply “tolerate” or fit into environments

✨ We use each child’s strengths to develop meaningful strategies and supports that genuinely work for them and their everyday life

✨ We tailor therapy to the individual—supporting regulation, participation and independence in ways that feel safe, respectful and empowering

✨ We work in partnership with families to ensure children feel understood, supported and celebrated

We’re passionate about creating spaces where children can thrive as themselves 🌱
Because when children feel seen, valued and supported, that’s when real, lasting progress happens.

Occupational Therapy - supporting children and teens as they grow 🤔

At Kids Therapy Station, we support children and young people from 3 years through to 18+, tailoring our approach to each stage of development and every individual’s unique needs. We’re a mobile service, meaning we come to environments where children feel most comfortable — home, school, or within their community — helping build skills in real-life settings.

Here’s how OT can support across the different stages:

✨ Early Years (3–7 years)
Building the foundations for learning and development:
• Emotional regulation and early social skills
• Fine and gross motor skills for play and school readiness
• Sensory processing to support behaviour and engagement
• Attention, listening, and transitioning between activities

🌱 Pre-Teens (8–12 years)
Growing independence, confidence, and resilience:
• Organisation, attention, and task completion
• Social skills and peer relationships
• Emotional regulation and coping strategies
• Independence with school routines and responsibilities

🚀 Adolescents (13–18+ years)
Preparing for adulthood and real-world success:
• Executive functioning (planning, time management, study skills)
• Emotional wellbeing and stress management
• Social communication and confidence
• Daily living skills and independence
• Transition planning for further education, work, or community life

No two children are the same — which is why everything we do is individualised, practical, and strengths-based.

HOW OT CAN SUPPORT PRE-TEENS

The pre-teen years (ages 9–12) are a big transition — not quite little kids anymore, but not yet teenagers. It’s a time of rapid growth, increasing expectations, and growing independence.

And it’s exactly where occupational therapy can make a lasting difference.
At Kids Therapy Station, we support pre-teens to build the skills they need now, so they can step into adolescence feeling confident, capable, and prepared.

As school demands increase and social dynamics become more complex, many pre-teens need support with:
• Staying organised and managing time
• Regulating emotions and handling stress
• Navigating friendships and social challenges
• Keeping up with classroom expectations
• Becoming more independent in daily routines

Occupational therapy focuses on these real-life skills — helping pre-teens strengthen:
✨ Confidence and self-identity
✨ Emotional regulation and resilience
✨ Executive functioning (planning, organisation, focus)
✨ Social skills and self-advocacy
✨ Independence at home and school

By working in familiar environments like home or school, therapy becomes practical, relevant, and easier to carry over into everyday life.

We also provide strengths-based, neuroaffirming support for pre-teens with autism, ADHD, sensory differences, and other developmental needs — always tailoring our approach to each child.

💛 The goal isn’t just to get through the pre-teen years — it’s to prepare young people to thrive in adolescence and beyond.

EQUIPPING YOUR CHILD WITH SKILLS MAY SHIFT THEIR BEHAVIOUR PARADIGM

Parenting a child with big emotions or challenging behaviour can be exhausting, confusing, and at times even isolating. But what if we shifted the way we understand what’s really going on?

Clinical psychologist Ross Greene offers a powerful reframe:

“Kids do well when they can.”

Not when they want to. Not when they’re motivated by rewards or consequences.

When they can.

This means that when a child is struggling — melting down, refusing, lashing out, or shutting down — it’s not about laziness, defiance, manipulation, or attention-seeking. It’s a signal. A clue that something deeper is going on.

Troublesome behaviour is often the result of lagging skills, such as:
• Difficulty with flexibility and adapting to change
• Low frustration tolerance
• Challenges with emotional regulation
• Underdeveloped problem-solving skills

When we shift from asking:
👉 “How do I make my child behave?”
to:
👉 “What skills is my child missing, and how can I help?”
…we completely change the dynamic.

Instead of escalating power struggles — where both parent and child feel frustrated and misunderstood — we open the door to connection, understanding, and growth.

Ross Greene’s Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) approach is built on this idea. It’s about working with children to understand their concerns, while also sharing our own, and then solving problems together.

As Greene says:
“That’s how you lose an enemy and gain a problem-solving partner. That’s how you move from adversary to teammate.”

This doesn’t mean there are no boundaries. It means we approach challenges with curiosity instead of control, and collaboration instead of conflict.

It also means giving ourselves grace as parents. This approach takes time, patience, and practice — and it’s okay if we haven’t always gotten it right.
The hopeful truth is this: kids are incredibly resilient.

“They come around if we start doing the right thing.”

💛 When children feel understood and supported, they are far more able to build the skills they need to succeed — at home, at school, and in life.
