The NCNED is Australia’s peak Research Centre for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), long COVID and Gulf War Illness (GWI) based at Griffith University Our national and international reputation has been built on promoting consumer engagement in research to understand the pathophysiology of ME/CFS, long COVID and GWI and discover diagnostic tests and potential pharmacotherapeutic targets for these conditions. Our achievements include:
- Establishing the largest and longest-running longitudinal biobank of clinical, biological and neurological samples from people who live with ME/CFS, long COVID or GWI.
- Over 60 novel publications investigating the pathophysiology, epidemiology and health economics of ME/CFS, long COVID and GWI, as well as potential pharmacotherapeutic interventions.
- World first identification of the role of Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) ion channels and calcium signalling in the pathophysiology of ME/CFS, long COVID and GWI.
- Developing the world’s most advanced laboratory-based diagnostic test for ME/CFS, long COVID and GWI to date using a Natural Killer Cell Electrophysiology Model (NKEM).
- Undertaking advanced drug testing to identify potential pharmacotherapeutic treatments for ME/CFS, long COVID and GWI using NKEM.
- World-leading investigations demonstrating similar brain dysfunction in ME/CFS and long COVID using ultra-high field 7 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (7T MRI).
- Completing evidence-based evaluations and systematic reviews of a number of posited pathomechanisms and treatments for ME/CFS.
- Guiding policy reform through submissions to parliamentary inquiries to improve the care and health outcomes of Australians who live with ME/CFS or long COVID.

Lisa McCorkell is a policy strategist and researcher who is living with long COVID. She co-founded the Patient-Led Research Collaborative, a group of long COVID patients conducting research on long COVID and advocating for better policies for disabled people. Lisa is the co-author of several prominent long COVID research studies, including two reviews in Nature; has worked on legislation in the US including the $11 billion Long COVID Research Moonshot Act; has coordinated a patient-led biomedical research fund of $5 million toward long COVID and associated conditions; has had dozens of speaking engagements on long COVID including to US Congress, NIH and the White House; and has co-created scorecards that evaluate meaningful patient engagement in research. She has a masters in public policy from University of California, Berkeley and a background in social safety net policy and labour and employment issues. Lisa was featured as one of Nature's 10 people who shaped science in 2022.

Dr C. Gunnar Gottschalk is the CEO and Managing Board Member of Simmaron Research Inc. (SRI), a 501(c)(3) biomedical research foundation established in 2011 in Incline Village, Nevada. He earned his PhD in Neuroscience from Rush University in 2020 and currently serves as Section Chief of Translational Science. Dr Gottschalk’s research focuses on the design and ex*****on of mechanism-based clinical trials across a range of therapeutic areas, including his ongoing trial investigating the efficacy of low-dose rapamycin (sirolimus) in patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and other infection-associated chronic conditions (IACCs) (NCT06257420).

Dr Gottschalk is the co-founder of Sotira Scientific and co-inventor of KEPTIDE (U.S. Patent No. 11,078,242), an intranasal peptide therapy developed for the prevention and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection. He is also the co-founder and CEO of Simmpyra Pharmaceuticals, LLC, an oncology-focused startup based at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery. Simmpyra is developing patent-pending STAT3-targeting compounds for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

Since 2021, Dr Gottschalk has led a highly productive collaboration between SRI and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This partnership has attracted substantial support from private donors, establishing a financially sustainable research model. Over the past five years, the collaboration has resulted in six major foundation grants, one NIH R21 award and direct research funding for the UWM Department of Chemistry. Dr Gottschalk’s leadership has been instrumental in advancing research on ME/CFS, Long COVID, IACCs and early-stage therapeutic development in peptide biology and autophagy-modulating compounds.

NCNED researcher, Ms Maira Inderyas, presented the most recent research outputs from the centre at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Japan Neuroscience Society held in Niigata, Japan, from 24th-27th July 2025.

Ms Inderyas presented the findings from Dr Kiran Thapaliya's latest work on 'Assessment of myelin signal in long COVID patients', as well as her own research based on 'Investigation of blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal responses in long COVID patients'. Findings of both research works highlighted alterations in brain regions caused by SARS-COV-2 virus resulting in altered myelin composition density as well as reduced BOLD signals to particular regions. The reduction in the BOLD signal also showed a positive correlation with the disease course, indicating altered cognition and reduced metabolism, particularly during mentally stimulating operations.

Lubov Nathanson is an Associate Professor at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), where her research efforts focus on translational genomics. Her current research focuses on gaining insight into the epigenomic and transcriptional changes involved in multi-symptom disorders including Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Gulf War illness (GWI). Specifically, her ongoing research involves identifying biomarkers and mechanisms of ME/CFS and GWI using approaches such as RNAseq, Copy Number Variation and DNA methylation to identify transcriptional regulators that result in characteristic symptomatology associated with ME/CFS and GWI.

Prior to her faculty appointment at NSU, A/Professor Nathanson earned her PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the prestigious Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and completed post-doctoral work at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where she built expertise in cellular processes. As a manager and later Director of the Gene Expression and Microarray Core (2004 - 2010), she gained extensive hands-on experience of sample processing for microarray, NanoString and Next Generation Sequencing analyses. As part of the Bioinformatics group (2010-2012), A/Professor Nathanson utilized extensive bioinformatics software tools and gained experience in analyzing large genomics datasets, as well as conducting systems biology analyses. Much of her academic work in recent years involves analyses of gene expression data from NanoString, microarrays and RNA-seq.

Maureen R. Hanson (BS, PhD) is Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. She is also Director of the Center for Enervating Neuroimmune Disease, which encompasses an NIH Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Center. The Center is also funded by several foundations and private donors to perform basic research into the pathophysiology of ME/CFS. Professor Hanson was co-chair of the NIH NANDSC ME/CFS Research Roadmap Working Group of Council, which completed a Research Roadmap for ME/CFS. She is also on the scientific advisory boards of the Open Medicine Foundation, Simmaron Research Foundation, the Solve ME/CFS Initiative and the WE&ME Foundation.

Dr Hanson has a BS from Duke University and a PhD from Harvard University. Before moving to Cornell, she was on the faculty in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia. She has served as Associate Director of the Cornell Biotechnology Program and Director of the Cornell NSF Plant Science Center. Dr Hanson has had a dual research program on cell and molecular biology of plants and on human disease. She has also been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.

𝗡𝗖𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗛𝗕𝗠 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗲

NCNED researchers Associate Professor Leighton Barnden, Dr Kiran Thapaliya and Ms Maira Inderyas presented their most recent findings in long COVID at the Organisation of Human Brain Mapping (OHBM) Conference, held in June at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

A/P Barnden found Salience and Default Mode Network connectivity decreased (progressively weakened) with duration, but visual to lingual connectivity strengthened with duration in long COVID.

Dr Thapaliya demonstrated altered tissue microstructure in the white matter and cerebellum regions in long COVID compared to healthy controls using diffusion weighted imaging and T1w/T2w mapping techniques.

Ms Inderyas reported blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal responses to be significantly lower in long COVID when compared with COVID-19 recovered individuals. This reduction in BOLD signal also positively correlated with the disease course, indicative of altered cognition and reduced metabolism.

Katsuhiko Muraki is a Professor of Cellular Pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy, Aichi-Gakuin University, Nagoya, Japan. He also holds appointments as a Visiting Professor at the Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Research Centre, University of Leeds, UK, and as an Adjunct Professor at Griffith University, Australia. He obtained his PhD in 1990 from Nagoya City University. From 1989 to 1991, he was awarded a Research Fellowship for Young Scientists by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and conducted postdoctoral research at the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology, St. George’s Hospital Medical School, UK.

Until 2005, Dr. Muraki served as a research scientist in the Department of Chemical Pharmacology at Nagoya City University, where he specialized in the electrophysiology of smooth muscle. His current research focuses on ion channel pharmacology, with a particular emphasis on pharmacological modulation of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels and mechanosensitive Piezo channels. He maintains active international collaborations with Professor David Beech (UK), Professor Eeva Moilanen (Finland) and Professor Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik (Australia).

𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗵𝗗/𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

NCNED welcomes Mr Tanoj Singh (pictured left below), a PhD candidate who joined the Centre in April. Tanoj’s research focuses on applying diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) to investigate microstructural changes in the white matter of individuals with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and long COVID. The aim of Tanoj’s work is to enhance the understanding of underlying neurobiological mechanisms in these diseases through advanced neuroimaging techniques.

We are also pleased to welcome Mr Tianyi Song (pictured right below), a Master’s student whose project focuses on the discovery of the dysfunction of TRP channels in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and long COVID patients.
