𝗡𝗖𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗩𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

Our researchers are currently investigating the immunological disturbances of people living with ME/CFS and long COVID. This pioneering research will uncover novel genetic insights that are yet to be investigated in ME/CFS and long COVID.

We are recruiting the following participants:

-ME/CFS group: participants who have received a diagnosis of ME/CFS (where diagnosis was made using the CCC (2003) or ICC (2011) definitions)
-Long COVID group: participants meeting the World Health Organization definition for long COVID

The inclusion criteria are as follows:

-Australian resident aged 18 to 65 years
-Non-smoker
-Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
-BMI between 18.5 and 30
-No current diagnosis of serious chronic illness, e.g. autoimmune, cancer, diabetes
-Not routinely taking immunomodulatory medications, e.g. corticosteroids
-Be able to drive to Melbourne or Geelong for a blood collection between 28th January and 4th February, 2026

This study involves the donation of 50ml of blood and the completion of an online questionnaire.

Participants will receive a $25 Coles e-voucher and enter the draw to win a $75, $100 and $150 Coles e-voucher drawn half-yearly.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗡𝗖𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Dr Natalie Eaton-Fitch and NCNED Researchers have uncovered immune changes in Australian Gulf War Veterans suffering from Gulf War Illness. Our most recent investigation published in PLOS ONE analysed hundreds of immune-related genes and found that 33 were significantly altered in veterans with GWI. These immune changes were linked to chronic inflammation, weakened T-cell responses and interferon signalling.

This research has identified potential markers for future research and provides an additional avenue for diagnostics and therapies. Please see the link to the publication below:

Ms Urooj Ishrat is a new PhD candidate at NCNED. Her research is investigating the role of immune cells and ion channels in ME/CFS and Long COVID by using multi-omics approach. This investigation using scRNA and in silico methods will help in identifying biomarkers which can be used for the diagnosis of ME/CFS and Long COVID. In the short video below, she will give a brief introduction about her research topic and methods and how it will help the ME/CFS and Long COVID community.

Every two years NCNED hosts the Research Innovation and Discovery (RID) Conference for ME/CFS, Long COVID and Gulf War Illness.

At NCNED our key driver is to RID ME/CFS, Long COVID and GWI patients of their diseases through our key agenda of the identification of the pathomechanisms, pharmacotherapeutic interventions and development of a screening/diagnostic test for each of these diseases.

NCNED's RID agenda is also embodied in our biennial Conference where international researchers and clinicians present their research in these key agenda areas.

NCNED Professor Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik shared NCNED key research findings on ion-channel mediated calcium dysfunction at the International Association for CFS/ME (IACFS/ME) Conference held on October 22-25, 2025.

Professor Marshall-Gradisnik presented the most recent research outputs from the centre that highlighted their latest large-scale ion-channel research findings funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia.

In a collaborative effort, Dr Natalie Eaton-Fitch co-hosted a workshop for the International Association for CFS/ME (IACFS/ME) Conference 2025. This workshop focused on sharing current research insights on clinical trials assessing treatment options for people living with ME/CFS, exploring method and protocol alternatives, and future research directions using machine learning. This workshop reflects NCNED’s ongoing commitment to improving clinical outcomes and fostering innovative strategies in the field.

Mr Singh is the Executive Director of the Research Quality and Advice branch at the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The branch manages NHMRC’s guidelines and evidence work, including the Australian Dietary Guidelines, the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and other environmental and clinical guidelines. Mr Singh also leads NHMRC’s activities to support Indigenous health research and researchers, ethics and integrity functions and has held a range of senior management roles, mostly in health policy.

𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗔𝗠𝗠𝗔)

Masters student, Jessica Dwyer, travelled to Adelaide this month to present at the 2025 Australasian Military Medicine Association Conference (AMMA). Jessica presented a poster on Gulf War Illness. Over two days, she shared findings on immune function in veterans with Gulf War Illness, contributing to research aimed at improving understanding and health outcomes. The conference provided an excellent opportunity to engage with defence health professionals and researchers advancing the field of military medicine and veteran health.

Dr Jarman is originally from 6 generations of mixed sheep and cropping farmers in New Zealand. He trained in New Zealand, UK (Leeds, Plymouth), Ireland (Galway), Melbourne and Adelaide. Dr Jarman is a Pain Specialist and Anaesthetist at St John of God Midland Hospital and also serves as the Director of the Pain Service. He is a Senior Lecturer in Pain Medicine at Notre Dame and Griffith Universities. Dr Jarman received the Cecil Gray prize for the highest scoring exam result in Australia and New Zealand in Anaesthesia in 2009 and a Merit (Distinction) for the Pain Medicine exam in 2014. His interests include Low Dose Naltrexone for Fibromyalgia, nerve blocks for pelvic pain and peripheral neuropathic pain.
