Dr Jarman is originally from 6 generations of mixed sheep and cropping farmers in New Zealand. He trained in New Zealand, UK (Leeds, Plymouth), Ireland (Galway), Melbourne and Adelaide. Dr Jarman is a Pain Specialist and Anaesthetist at St John of God Midland Hospital and also serves as the Director of the Pain Service. He is a Senior Lecturer in Pain Medicine at Notre Dame and Griffith Universities. Dr Jarman received the Cecil Gray prize for the highest scoring exam result in Australia and New Zealand in Anaesthesia in 2009 and a Merit (Distinction) for the Pain Medicine exam in 2014. His interests include Low Dose Naltrexone for Fibromyalgia, nerve blocks for pelvic pain and peripheral neuropathic pain.

𝗗𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗘/𝗖𝗙𝗦, 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗳 𝗪𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗥𝗜𝗗 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿

Dr Louise Rowntree is a NHMRC EL1 Fellow with extensive expertise in viral immunology in vulnerable populations. She completed her PhD at Monash University investigating human cross-reactive CD8+ T cells in viral infections and then joined Prof Tony Purcell's Laboratory (Monash) to further explore T cell cross-reactivity between viral and self-antigens and identifying allopeptides. Dr Rowntree has been part of Prof Katherine Kedzierska’s Laboratory at the Doherty Institute since 2019, where her work focuses on dissecting anti-viral responses in high-risk groups, including First Nations peoples, patients with co-morbidities, children and pregnant women, with an emphasis on T cell epitope identification and T cell responses associated with severe disease.

Dr Rowntree has worked in viral T cell immunity since 2011, most recently on influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2. She has published a number of peer-reviewed research articles, exemplified by a world-first report of a SARS-CoV-2 CD8+ T cell specificity early in the pandemic and publications detailing the establishment of SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells following COVID-19 infection in adults and children. Dr Rowntree was the recipient of the Eureka Prize for Infectious Diseases 2023, Woodward Medal 2024 ( #1 UoM STEM Prize), Faculty Excellence Award for Discovery Achievements 2023 and a PM’s Prize for Science Finalist 2024. Her emerging international profile is recognized by internationally invited talks and selected international abstract presentations with travel grants and speaker prizes.

Tuong is a new PhD student at NCNED. His research focuses on applying artificial intelligence methods, particularly machine learning and deep learning, to analyse brain MRI features with the aim of improving the identification and diagnosis of ME/CFS and Long COVID. In this short video, he gives a brief introduction about his research topic and the main method he is using.

Dr Marie-Claire Seeley is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide and a leading expert in autonomic disorders, specialising in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). With over 30 years of lived experience with an autonomic disorder, she brings a deeply personal perspective to her research and advocacy. Dr Seeley established Australia’s first POTS registry and, as CEO of the Australian POTS Foundation, champions consumer-led research to drive meaningful change in clinical care and health policy.

Associate Professor Arutha Kulasinghe leads the Clinical-oMx Lab at the Frazer Institute at The University of Queensland and is the Scientific Director of the newly established Queensland Spatial Biology Centre at the Wesley Research Institute. Dr Kulasinghe has pioneered spatial transcriptomics using digital spatial profiling approaches in the Asia-Pacific region, contributing to world-first studies for lung cancer, head and neck cancer and COVID-19. His research aims to understand the underlying pathobiology by using an integrative multi-omics approach and is supported by the MRFF, US DoD, Cancer Australia, NHMRC and numerous hospital foundations. Dr Kulasinghe was 2023 Cure Cancer “Researcher of the Year” and in the 2024 “Top 100 Innovators List” in Australia.

Dr Sarah Annesley is a Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Molecular Cell Biology laboratory in the department of Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. Her laboratory’s primary research areas are the investigation of mitochondrial function and cellular pathology underlying neurological disorders. She focuses on three main disorders Parkinson’s Disease, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Long COVID. The overarching aim of her research is to characterise these disorders with a focus on the mechanisms of the disease process at the cellular and molecular level. Dr Annesley aims to discover how these mechanisms can be manipulated for treatment and used to identify biomarkers which can be developed into world-first diagnostic tests.

Dr Annesley’s group is solely funded from external research grants and in her 10-year Postdoctoral career she has attracted a total of $13.6M in competitive research funding grants. She has published 57 manuscripts in high quality journals, supervised 21 Honour’s, 10 PhD and 3 Masters students to successful completion with many of these students receiving awards/prizes for their work and going on to positions at notable universities and institutions here in Australia and abroad. Dr Annesley balances her research career with raising her two children and in 2023 was awarded the prestigious Tracey Banivanua Mar Fellowship. This fellowship aims to support people who have had major caring responsibilities in maintaining momentum with their research career.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗖𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿

Breanne’s research project is investigating deep phenotypes and cytotoxic function of Natural Killer cells in people living with ME/CFS and long COVID. Using a never before investigated panel of surface markers, this research will provide further insights into the cytotoxic mechanisms of Natural Killer cells, contributing to our understanding of both ME/CFS and long COVID.

We wish Breanne the very best as she continues her research in an Honour’s project next year.

Mr Tianyi Song is a new MPhil student at NCNED. His research is focusing on additional ion channels which may be potentially underpinning the pathomechanism of ME/CFS. In this short video below, he gives a brief introduction about his research topic and the main method he is using.
