In our fast-paced, ever-connected world, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important skills we can develop—Emotional Intelligence (EQ). While intellectual ability (IQ) has long been considered the gold standard for success, research shows that emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in how we navigate our relationships, manage stress, make decisions, and ultimately thrive in life. But what exactly is emotional intelligence, and why is it so important?...

In a world that often celebrates self-reliance and "pushing through," admitting you're struggling can feel like admitting defeat. But the truth is, asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness — it's one of the bravest and healthiest things you can do. In Australia, where mateship and resilience are cultural cornerstones, many still find it hard to say, “I need support.” Yet, doing so could be the very thing that saves your mental health — and in some cases, your life....

This is the essence of The Spoon Theory — it's a metaphor used to explain what it’s like to live with a chronic illness, mental health condition, or invisible disability. For people who feel constantly exhausted, overwhelmed, or limited by their energy levels, it gives language to an often invisible struggle.

My latest blog explores the spoon theory and how it can help you whether you identify as a Spoonie or support someone who does with some practical ways to apply the spoon theory to real life.

Imagine waking up each morning with a limited number of spoons. Each spoon represents the energy it takes to do a task—getting out of bed, having a shower, making breakfast, commuting, socialising, or just getting through the day. Once you’ve used up your spoons, you can’t do anything else without consequences. You may need to rest, lie down, cancel plans—or borrow against tomorrow, knowing you’ll pay for it later....

The benefits of PMR are well-documented and can be felt after just a few sessions. In clinical settings, PMR is often used to support clients managing generalised anxiety disorder, insomnia, chronic pain, and even post-traumatic stress disorder. It's also a favourite among athletes and performers looking to manage pre-game or on-stage nerves.

The idea behind PMR is simple: when our bodies are relaxed, our minds tend to follow. Stress and anxiety often manifest as physical symptoms—tight shoulders, clenched jaws, or tense muscles. PMR teaches us to become more aware of this tension and, crucially, how to release it.

Here’s a simple guide to get you started with PMR. All you need is about 10–20 minutes and a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.

Set clear intentions, not just goals. After assessing where you are and reconnecting with your values, it’s time to look ahead.

Rather than just setting traditional "SMART goals," think about setting intentions. Intentions focus more on how you want to feel and live, rather than just ticking off achievements.

Creating a “life wheel” diagram if you’re visual is a great way to see imbalances at a glance. Think about the 8 life categories in the picture, and rate them from 1 - 10.

You might add or remove categories based on what’s most relevant to you. Once you have your areas, rate each one out of 10 based on your current satisfaction level. This gives you a snapshot of where you feel strong and where you might want to focus more attention.

In the fast-paced world we live in, it’s easy to drift from day to day without taking stock of where we are or where we’re heading. Many of us fall into routines – some good, some not so great – without realising we’re veering off course from the life we truly want to live. That’s where the concept of life auditing…...
