👶🚨 Go ahead… Wake The Baby!! 🤔

It's the age-old rule: never wake a sleeping baby! BUT as a baby-whisperer, I'm here to tell you that sometimes, a sleeping baby isn't always a good thing. The reality is, a sleep that's too long can be a cause for concern for a few reasons.

One of the most important examples is a newborn (especially one that's jaundiced or a preemie) who sleeps too long and moves into a state of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). This can happen when their tiny bodies don't get the fuel they need frequently enough. We need to make sure they're waking to feed within a certain time frame (which I cover in my consultations).

Other reasons you might need to gently rouse your little one include:

🚨Getting back on track with a feeding schedule (especially for very young babies).

🚨Preventing "sleep debt" and making sure the main sleep periods happen overnight.

🚨Needing to change a very soiled nappy to prevent skin irritation and more.

These ideas are some gentle ways to wake the baby that work like a charm.

😴 The Sneaky Truth About Sleep Debt! 🤯

Following up on our chat about waking a sleeping baby, I want to introduce you to a concept that's often the culprit behind bedtime battles and chronic night-waking... Sleep Debt. 🧐

It sounds counterintuitive, but letting your baby constantly "catch up" on sleep by taking super long, erratic naps during the day can actually backfire in a big way when it comes to night-time settling.

What is Sleep Debt in Babies?

It’s when your baby accrues a deficit of sleep because they consistently aren’t getting enough quality, restorative sleep during their optimal periods. And here’s the kicker: your baby might look exhausted, but too much daytime sleep doesn't automatically mean better night sleep.

Instead, those long, late afternoon naps can:

Shift their entire sleep rhythm later, making a good, early bedtime impossible.

Increase cortisol levels (that stress hormone!), making them overtired, wired, and harder to settle when the time comes.

Lead to multiple night wakings because their sleep pressure (the natural drive to sleep) isn't high enough to sustain a long stretch.

Remember, consistency is King (or Queen)! 👑

This is why, as tough as it is, establishing age-appropriate wake windows and cap-ping those naps when needed, we help create healthy sleep pressure that drives a beautiful, consolidated night sleep.

It's all about balance, not banking hours while understanding there can be very real reasons why your little one struggles with sleep. Hello feeding issues and oral restrictions I'm looking at you for one.

Let's bust some myths! Here's a summary of some common myths surrounding tongue ties. Let's get the facts straight. 😜

Where do I come in? Clarity, guidance and non-judgmental help is what I offer, as well as clinical experience working with a paediatric dentist within a tongue tie clinic.

Each baby needs accurate individual assessment, planning and support when it comes to feeding. I use specific tools to provide this for you and your child.

Whether a frenectomy is indicated there are specific steps to follow which include 👅 Assessment,
👅 Establishment of milk supply,
👅 Body work preparation and I
👅 IBCLC support before and after release.

This sets you and your baby up for “optimal timing ” release and recovery.

Frenulum restrictions are individual between children and the function can vary so much.
