😴 Struggling with daytime naps and nighttime sleep? Meet your new best friend: the 2-3-4 rule! 🍼✨

Here’s the scoop: It’s all about balancing naps and awake times to create the predictable day we all dream of. 🌈

🕑 Wake up? First nap is 2-2.5 hours later.
🕒 After that, a 3-hour window before the second nap.
🕓 Then, wind down for bedtime 4 hours after the last nap.

Why does it work? By afternoon, your little one's body produces extra cortisol, so they’re ready for a slightly longer stretch awake. Combine this with a short-long nap routine, and voilà – a more balanced, rested bub and (hopefully) a smoother night ahead! 🌙✨

Curious to learn more or ready to fine-tune your little one’s sleep? Let’s chat! 💬 Book a consultation, and let’s help your family get the rest you all deserve. 🛌💤

🎃👻 Will you be Tick or Treating this week? 🎃👻

I know many of you are knee-deep in glitter and pumpkins, prepping those adorable Halloween costumes for the little ones to rock at daycare or in your neighbourhoods. And can we just take a moment to appreciate how much fun dress-up is? I mean, who doesn't love a good cape or superhero mask!?

Now, I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of the growing tradition of Trick or Treating in Australia. While it’s super exciting to dress up and indulge in some sweet treats, it can get a bit confusing for our little ones. Why is it okay to go up to strangers' homes for candy one day and not the rest of the year? 🤔 But hey, that’s just my two cents from a parenting perspective!

As with everything in this wild ride called parenting, we all guide our little ones in different ways, and that’s what makes our parenting village so wonderful! 💖

So, tell me, will you be heading out for some Trick or Treating this week? I’d love to hear how your costume prep is going! Let’s share tips and tricks to make this Halloween both fun and safe! 🍬✨

🚼 Infant Dyschezia vs Constipation: What's the Difference? 🤔

Ever seen your little one straining, turning red, and looking like they're about to launch a rocket 🚀, only for nothing much to happen? You might be thinking, “Oh no, they’re constipated!” But here’s the thing - what you’re witnessing could actually be infant dyschezia (fancy term, right?) and not constipation at all!

Infant Dyschezia is super common in young babies and happens when they’re still learning to coordinate their muscles for p**ping. Lots of grunting and straining for a soft p**p at the end - it’s all part of growing up! 🌱

Constipation, on the other hand, usually means hard, pellet-like poos, fewer bowel movements, and your little one looking uncomfortable. So, if the end result is a nice, soft poo, don’t stress - it’s probably just infant dyschezia doing its thing. 😅

Remember, both are totally normal, but if you're ever unsure, reach out for professional assessment and advice. Infant dyschezia is typically self-resolving with no medical treatments needed, but many Mummas find adding in some extra soothing 💓💓 techniques like warm baths and gentle baby massage to their little ones day can be a big help through this tricky phase.

Want to know more about ways you can use baby massage to help your little one through their grunting era? 🤷 Or need some help navigating the poo-time uncertainty? 🤷‍♀️ Drop me a DM or comment below ⬇️, I’m here to help! You’ve got this, Mumma! 💪

What's your MUST HAVE in your nappy bag? 👜

As a mum of two under 2 and a Paeds Nurse, I will happily say that I never left home without being utterly prepared for anything! Especially when we were living in Roma in western Queensland at the time and doing lots of road trips back and forth to visit family on the east coast.

So what were my must haves?

👜 Nappies / Un**es
👜 Wipes and tissues
👜 Nappy bags
👜 Nappy cream
👜 Hand sanitiser
👜 Spare outfit or two
👜 Muslin wrap or two (handy for everything)
👜 Dummy / Teething toys
👜 Soft play book / small toys
👜 Fav cuddly / toy of the moment
👜 Cool boiled water (when age appropriate)
👜 Snacks (for boys AND me)

For longer trips / going away... I always made sure to add:

👩‍⚕️ Axilla Thermometer
👩‍⚕️ Paracetamol & Ibuprofen
👩‍⚕️ Measuring syringes

Because let's face it, kids will get sick at the most unpredictable moment... and usually when everything is closed!

What's been your biggest nappy bag must have? What item have you regretted leaving behind at home the most?

What do you get when you mix Paediatricians, ENT Surgeons, and a bunch of Nurses? An incredible evening of Paediatric Sleep Disordered Breathing education! 🙌

I’m absolutely loving the balance of working in both my worlds – combining my acute Paediatric Nursing at John Flynn Private Hospital with my Community Child Health Nursing practice. It keeps my week busy but my heart full! 💛

Staying on top of current best practice is so important to me as a Registered Nurse, and that’s why I cherish my time with our littlest patients at John Flynn and connecting with leading experts in the fields of paediatric healthcare. Plus, teaching the next generation of Paediatric Nurses is a huge bonus!

Did you know John Flynn Private Hospital now has so many amazing services for children, including

⭐ Paediatric Inpatient Unit (yep, sick kiddos too!)
⭐ Paediatric Day Surgery Unit, and
⭐ Early Parenting Sleep and Settle Program

Big thank you again to Dr Saba and Dr Tunde from Tiny Tots Paediatrics and Dr O'Neill and Dr Phillips from ENT Clinics Tugun for being part of the Paediatric ENT Education Evening recently!

Feeling grateful to be able to support families in both the hospital and community setting. 😊

🌟 Hey families! 🌟

That’s right! It's not just for the amazing John Flynn birthing families — ALL families are welcome!

Join in for a fun and friendly gathering where you can connect with other parents, share stories, and maybe even pick up a few parenting tips along the way! 🤗

Whether you’re a new parent or have a second or third little one this time round, we’d love to see you there!

Mark your calendars, bring your smiles, and let’s make some wonderful memories together!

Our Director and Principal Speech Pathologist, Hanna with one of the Midwife Navigators and Paediatric Nurses at hospital. Hanna attended a parent information morning for the mums and bubs group at John Flynn Private Hospital to provide a presentation on "Early Communication and Feeding Development" for infants from birth to eighteen months. This is a regular group our team attends to support new parents (and babies), and we are honoured to be able to give back to the community in this way.

Do I need to ditch breastfeeding to get a better night’s sleep? Absolutely NOT! 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

One of the biggest well-meaning bits of advice given by relatives or friends to a breastfeeding Mumma is to just switch to formula and you'll get a better sleeping baby. I absolutely get why it can seem like the quickest and easiest way on the surface. But making big nutritional changes, like introducing formula, can actually exacerbate the sleep situation even further. 😟😟😟

However, if you’re feeling like a human-dummy 🤱throughout the night, then the good news is that you can have a better night’s sleep AND breastfeed for as long as you wish to! In fact, some of my breastfed bubs have been some of the best sleepers I’ve known.

The secret? 🤷‍♀️ Taking a holistic approach to your little one’s sleep. That’s why I take the time from the start to work in partnership with you to map out realistic goals for you and your little one through a comprehensive holistic assessment and care planning.

Want to know more about how I can support a better night’s sleep for breastfeeding bubs?

🌙✨ Quick Tips: White Noise ✨🌙

Are you using a white noise machine to help your little one catch those precious Zzzs? You’re not alone! These devices have become a staple in many households, but recent buzz has raised concerns about their potential impact on language development. A paper by Dr. Benasich, a Professor of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, suggests that playing white noise during sleep could interfere with ‘acoustic mapping’ and affect language development. However, this focuses on a very specific age window (4-7 months) and uses careful wording like ‘could’ in there, so there’s no need to panic just yet.

It’s important to remember that poor sleep is proven to be far more detrimental to a child’s overall development. Your everyday interactions naturally provide a variety of sounds, rhythms, and language stimuli, which support language development. So, if white noise is helping your little one get the sleep they need, don’t hesitate to keep using it!

Let’s break it down with some tips! 😊💤

1. Turn Down the Volume! 📉 Keep that white noise machine low – it just needs to be a cozy background hum.

2. Location, Location, Location! 🛏️ Place the machine on a dresser or shelf, away from the cot. Your little one doesn’t need the front-row seat to white noise concerts!

3. Gradual Weaning! 🚀 Once your little one is sleeping soundly, ease them off the machine. Start by lowering the volume at nap times, then remove it from night time sleep. Just like training wheels, it’s all about getting used to it!

4. Nap Time Adventures! ☀️ Gradually ditch the
white noise during naps – first the morning nap, then lunchtime. Your little one will be a pro in no time!

5. Don’t Sweat It! 😅 If you find yourself in a loud situation (hello, family gatherings!) don’t hesitate to bring it back for a night. You can always follow the steps again if needed.

Remember, sleep is vital for our little ones development (and a happy, healthy Mumma too), so keep rolling with the white noise if it's working for you!💖
