🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀
This provides an opportunity for us all to focus on breast cancer and its impact on those affected by the disease in our community.

Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease. Remember you don’t need to be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts.

Changes to look for include:
• a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast
• a change in the size or shape of your breast
• a change to the ni**le, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion
• a ni**le discharge that occurs without squeezing
• a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling
• an unusual pain that doesn't go away.

Hope Island Medical Centre wants to encourage women of all ages to self-check and become “breast aware”. If you notice any changes, make an appointment with your GP to discuss further testing. Phone 5510 8199 or book online at www.himc.com.au

When did you last have your Heart Health checked?

The Heart Foundation is thrilled by announcement of a three-year extension to Medicare Heart Health Checks by the Australian Government, securing funding through to 30 June 2028.

This vital program - first introduced in 2019 following strong advocacy by the Heart Foundation and the broader heart health sector - has already led to over 870,000 Australians receiving a Heart Health Check.

The Heart Health Check is a 20-minute appointment with a GP to assess a person’s risk of heart attack or stroke and to support early, proactive steps to reduce risk factors like high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

This extension ensures more Australians can access preventive care that could save their lives. Read here for more information on Heart Health Checks 👉 https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/your-heart/heart-health-checks

We will be open tomorrow, but the number of patients we are able to see will depend on the capacity of our GPs and other staff who may be affected by flooding, debris and road closures. All booked appointments will remain in place, as long as our doctors are able to safely travel to the practice. Confirmation of appointments will be sent out in the morning, once we know the status of our staff. We thank you for your patience during this unprecedented weather event.
