John Flynn Private Hospital is a 345 bed, acute care hospital located at Tugun, which is on the southern end of the Gold Coast, within 5 minutes from the Gold Coast Airport. The hospital provides services to the population of the Gold Coast and the Tweed Coast extending into the NSW Northern Rivers area. John Flynn provides a wide range of health care services with a 24 hour emergency department, comprehensive cardiac services, general and orthopaedic surgery, cancer services, medical, maternity and paediatrics, renal dialysis, day surgery and rehabilitation services. John Flynn have a Tier One Contract with the Department of Veteran Affairs and also provide services to the Gold Coast and Tweed Veteran community. The campus consists of the main hospital building, specialist medical suites, the John Flynn Cancer Centre, and also includes additional services such as radiotherapy (radiation oncology), radiology (x-ray), pathology and a 24 hour onsite pharmacy. Nestled in a hilltop position with sweeping ocean and rural views and attractive, well-designed wards, John Flynn Private Hospital offers a peaceful environment conducive to good health and recovery.

Please join us in congratulating Caroline on her appointment as Maternity Unit Manager at John Flynn Private Hospital.

Caroline brings over two decades of midwifery experience and a strong clinical foundation to this role. During her five months as Acting Maternity Unit Manager, she demonstrated exceptional leadership, supporting key recruitment initiatives and guiding the successful rollout of the K2 Fetal Monitoring Project.

We’re excited for the future as Caroline leads our Maternity Team through a dynamic period of growth and development.

Pre eclampsia is a serious condition of pregnancy marked by high blood pressure and possible organ impact during pregnancy. Know the symptoms so you can seek help early:

⚠️Symptoms include:
• High blood pressure
Headaches that are difficult to treat or do not go away
• Swelling in hands, face or feet
• Blurred or changed vision or light sensitivity
• Upper belly pain or nausea
• Shortness of breath
• Sudden weight/fluid gain

Reporting these early are essential.

Talk to your midwife or obstetrician if you notice any of these signs—or if you’ve had high blood pressure before or are expecting multiples.

It is also possible to have pre-eclampsia without symptoms, so if you have questions or you are concerned, contact your midwife or obstetrician.

CMV is a common virus that’s usually harmless but if it’s caught during pregnancy, it may affect your baby’s hearing or development. Simple hygiene steps can help keep you and your bub safe:

• Wash hands thoroughly for ≥ 15 seconds after handling children, nappies or dummies
• Avoid sharing food, drinks, utensils or kisses on the lips with young children
• Clean toys, bottles and surfaces regularly

Routine CMV testing isn’t standard in Australia, but if you work with young children or feel unwell, talk to your midwife or obstetrician about screening
