As the colder months settle in, we're seeing a rise in colds and flus here in the clinic. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) point of view, this comes as no surprise—winter is the season of Yin, when our body naturally draws inward and our Qi (defensive energy) can be more vulnerable to external pathogens like Wind, Cold, and Damp.

Winter is a time to rest, nourish, and protect. Your best defences against cold and flu season are:
Acupuncture for immune support and recovery
Chinese herbs tailored to your pattern
Warm, cooked foods and teas
Keeping your body—and especially your neck—warm
Adequate rest and downtime

By working with your body, not against it, TCM offers a gentle yet powerful approach to both prevention and healing.

Wishing you a healthy and warm rest of winter!

Within my years of treating pregnant women in our clinic and including my own three births I have seen that labour can start subtly usually before week 40.

The body starts to prep us by giving us little Braxton Hicks at night or through the day. There can be random stages where mini contractions last for 20 minutes with each contraction coming in regular time intervals only to stop abruptly leaving us in a state of, "Oh I thought we were go". This can happen at any time from 38 weeks on, sometimes earlier... But every woman is different and some can get no pre-trials but glides easily into active labour when the baby is ready.

It's just how your body is made up and how it will respond can be so different to anyone else or previous births, so be gentle on yourself and know that your body knows what it is doing.

It's always tricky the first time around as you have nothing to compare it to except maybe your mum or sister's births and this can be so different to what you will experience.

Seek guidance from health professionals but also know your inner intuition and gut feeling is very dependable if we listen.

Happy slow stages of labour get you to the finish line, try to enjoy every twinge and false contraction knowing that this is all loading your system with oxytocin which will soften and help efface your cervix to get labour going.

Really the women's body is a masterpiece and often our thoughts and emotions just need to get out of the way and let her play her biggest symphony yet.

Best, Tabitha

We have a lot of pregnant ladies pass through our clinic, they come in for all pregnancy-related symptoms, plus the once-a-week treatment for four weeks before their birth.

But what about you the Mumma after you give birth?

We love meeting all the little cherubs and we get to have lots of cuddles and treating these new little treasures if things are not quite right. But at a certain point treating the new Mum is a must, why? Because after birth the body can do with some extra balancing and with interrupted nights and producing milk the Mum can get a little run down and maybe even a tad stressed. Even if motherhood is a breeze for you, having a treatment is just great for the soul and helps reboot all your bodily systems.

Witnessing the fatigue wash away from their faces after they drift out the door from a session has inspired me to write this blog. More women need to know about how acupuncture can support them, knowing that they will have more energy and clarity to carry on being the mum they want to be, it makes total sense to me.

I believe from having three boys of my own, that creating regular time for yourself when you're a mother is the key to happy mothering. My biggest pass on learning to all Mums would be, "It doesn't have to be for long but it does need to have some regularity about it and something that nurtures you".

So how does it work... Acupuncture builds energy by creating flow between your organs, it does this by moving stagnation while building blood and Qi. When this happens your body relaxes and so does your mind creating more energy, calm and happiness.

If you're a Mum, think acupuncture.

I love seeing research papers backing what I have been doing through my career in Chinese Medicine with IVF.
So we recently found that new research highlighted that acupuncture not only improved pregnancy rates but also enhanced embryo quality.
Oh wow how amazing is this??
And of course they also said...While acupuncture shows promise, it's essential to approach it as a complementary therapy rather than a standalone treatment. Consulting with a fertility specialist and a licensed acupuncturist experienced in reproductive health is crucial to ensure a coordinated and safe approach to IVF.

Luckily it has been my passion and area of experience over many moons of clinic. Offering tailored treatments to support fertility and reproductive health is my gig and love. So if you are thinking of referring any family or friends you will know I can hold them in this complicated and emotional journey.

Carrots are packed with antioxidants, which help protect our arteries and keep our heart healthy. Our arteries carry oxygen-rich blood all around the body, and antioxidants help prevent damage to them. Carrots are a great way to get these protective nutrients.

They may also help support the gut microbiome, the community of good bacteria in our digestive system, which is linked to overall health.

Culture Food Life has some amazing recipes and information on how to include carrots into your daily routine. (cultured vegetable etc)

All in all, carrots are a smart and tasty choice to include in your diet regularly!
