And I thought I was doing everything right.
For years I was in the gym five, six days a week. Heavy weights. Long sessions. Convinced that if I just pushed harder I'd finally shift the weight.
At 40 it stopped working. And I was miserable.

The more I lifted, the more I held. My joints were screaming. My body was exhausted. And the scales didn't care how heavy my deadlift was.

And I thought I was being so healthy.
For years my breakfast was a pressed juice or a fruit salad. Oats with banana because it was "good for the gut." An acai bowl because it looked incredible on Instagram. Coconut water because it was "natural hydration." Maybe some granola if I was feeling generous. If I even ate at all β€” some mornings I wasn't even hungry, which I took as a win. Another sign my body was working, right?

Wrong. That was a warning sign.

At 40 I realised I'd been feeding it rocket fuel for fat storage β€” or starving it entirely and calling it discipline.

All that fruit. The oats. The acai. The coconut water. The grains. Pure sugar hitting your bloodstream first thing in the morning β€” no matter how "heart healthy" or "superfood" the label says it is. This is behind the scenes of something I have poured my entire life into.

Ten years ago I was running my first clinics in Melbourne, quietly gaining weight despite doing everything I was told to do. I didn’t ignore it β€” I tracked it. Obsessively. Two years of testing, logging, watching my body do the opposite of what conventional fitness promised. Up and down. Frustrated but fascinated.
I wrote about it. Spoke about it. Kept going when I probably should have stopped.
