Complex care SIL works when care, team, environment and partners work together

At Abloom, we care for people with complex needs using supportive environments, supportive people, and supportive partnerships, all held together by supportive communication.

For the participants that we care for, support is not optional.

For people with high physical support needs SIL is the system that enables them to move, eat, communicate, stay safe and live with dignity.

The same is true for people living with complex behaviours. Without consistent, skilled support, safety, stability and progress are not possible.

No support in their care home, risk rises and quality of life falls.

SIL functions best when support is intentional.

Support work with complex care participants begins with understanding your teams needs.

At Abloom Care, we remind our teams again and again, that establishing and maintaining professional boundaries is not a maybe.

It’s how we deliver exceptional care.

Because people who are natural carers have one thing in common: they tend to over-give.

- They want to learn and do their role to the best of their ability.

- They want to support others because the work is deeply rewarding.

- They want to give their all to delivering top notch care.

But sustainable care requires intention and an ongoing practice of supporting self and others.

At Abloom Care, we help our team cultivate exactly that.

We foster presence and connection while on shift and healthy disengagement when they return to their own lives.

Strong boundaries. Sustainable care. Thriving participants.

Learning about the person behind the plan supports connection before behaviour.

Over a decade of implementing complex behaviour support plans we know what happens when you forget you are caring for a person

You lose the ability to be compassionate.

You lose the capacity to view behaviours as ways to communicate.

You lose the weight of your care factor.

This is why when we set up the care instructions we introduce the story of the person, their interests, their strengths and practical ways to build a relationship with the participant.

Yes, the important documents, safety plan, support strategies that work in person are definitely, included.

But as we know from our lived experience with others and with our brother.

We never want to lose sight of the value of people to people connection.

If you would like to learn more about how we help NDIS complex care participants with supported independent living (SIL) environments.

Comment “Safety” below and we’ll send our approach to high intensity SIL for participants with complex support needs. 👇

When you bring in support workers, nurses, and coordinators who want to be part of the solution, the conversations change.

They become innovative.
They stay care focused.
They lead with empathy.

At Abloom Care, one of our guiding principles is:
“We discuss, listen and collaborate to solve problems not to highlight issues.”

This mindset shapes how we approach complex care to look at what can be done, how environments can be adjusted, and how supports can be delivered with dignity and intent.

For the people we serve, support is not optional.

The result is a team effort, where support workers feel valued and supported, and finish their shifts with genuine satisfaction because providing care should be a rewarding experience.

Complex care participants require the right support person, not the next available one. At Abloom Care Services, we don’t want to “fill a shift.”

We match people with people.
We ensure skillset supports needs.
We communicate every step of the way.

We hire with clear expectations and standards on who we need and what experiences and qualifications are perfect for supporting that participant.

We’re now welcoming more team members to join our SIL house in Northern GC for a participant with complex behavioural needs.

Support is not optional.

We are looking forward to connecting more people together so we can focus on participant safety in environments that allow them to grow with support.

If you are a support worker with mental health experience and a genuine commitment to helping people build greater independence, we want to hear from you.

Three months ago, this family’s NDIS plan doubled. Yesterday, I realised they’re still surviving on the old one.

This was a reminder of what families are really facing in the NDIS.

A family we support received a new NDIS plan three months ago.

We went to battle to justify an increase in support funding as support coordinators.

Coordinating with allied health professionals, specialists, multiple letters of support, extensive evidence to support the family.

It wasn’t a small adjustment.

It was double their previous support funding.

A full 100% increase with a shorter plan length for additional assistive technology considerations.

And yet yesterday, they were still operating as though nothing changed.

Still carrying it all
Still trying to make do with limited support
Still exhausted

The challenge is that

- carer's burnout doesn't disappear overnight

- families often find funding hard to use even when approved

- many are used to underspending because they don't recognise they are finally resourced

Please don't believe the hype that is in the media about NDIS money being splurged and misused.

It's not what we see every day.

Families that are in our care are very cautious, are anxious about overspending and many are not maximising their funds correctly.

We support complex care participants with high physical support needs and/or complex behavioral profiles.

Support is not optional.

They require support to
breathe,
sit
assist move,
sleep,
to take safe action,
to access the community,
to work,
to be included and involved in communities.

They rejoice when they can live their lives.

When double the funding arrives participants are not splurging they are learning to feel safe to receive vital support.

At Abloom Care Services we stand beside the people we support as partners, championing dignified care.

This speaks volumes about our culture.

One of our GC support teams is heading into training with a BSP this morning, and we couldn't’t be more grateful.

Despite the short turnaround and the need to reshuffle shifts, they stepped up without hesitation not with panic, but with care.

Their willingness to try to make themselves available, learn, and be equipped to deliver exceptional care is exactly what defines us.

It’s these moments that show who we are.

Let’s go, Abloom.

After years in the disability sector, we have witnessed the same painful cycle repeat: passionate support workers stepping into the field with open hearts, only to become overwhelmed, overextended, and emotionally drained.

They were expected to be constantly available, navigate blurred personal boundaries, work unpaid hours, and run their own admin like fully equipped businesses, all while actively , supporting others.

Over time, the joy and reward that drew them in would fade under the weight of burnout.

We knew the way things were being done wasn’t working and we were determined to lead differently.

We rebuilt our provider model around guiding principles. One being:

"We anticipate continuous improvement in the workplace environments, reporting processes, qualifications and work practices to have enjoyable, uncomplicated and rewarding experiences for all."

From that belief, we designed an onboarding experience and support system that removes stress, restores boundaries, and helps every team member reconnect with the heart of their work.

The impact??

* Our support workers feel fulfilled and passionate again.

* They are no longer isolated or overwhelmed.

* Our onboarding is simple, our expectations are clear, and our team feels safe, heard, and supported from day one.

If you're looking for a provider who puts people first and gives you everything you need to do your best work, we’d love to welcome you.

Yesterday, a support coordination win happened that made us remember why we are in the care business.

A $193k increase in funded supports we helped coordinate and negotiate for a beautiful young lady with high intensity support needs in her new NDIS plan.

70 k of this will help her:
Sleep better
Bathe safely
Assist stand
Move with assistive tech
Sit with less pain

Money used in this way helps people have quality support to be and that lights us up.

Not sure if you are getting the most from your support coordinator register for our free info session
