I am reaching out to counsellors, carers, and others working in the helping industry. We are putting together a 4 hour equine assisted therapy program designed for people who support others, including counsellors, carers, support workers, and those in caring or service roles. The program aims to build awareness around burnout, recognising the signs, and understanding what can help. Hearing from people with lived experience will help shape this program.

If you feel comfortable sharing, I would really value your input.

1. What were the signs of burnout for you? What told you that something was not right?

2. What helped you come through or begin to recover from burnout?

You are welcome to respond in the comments, send me a DM, or email me privately. Please share only what feels safe. Your experience may help support others in this community.

Each day I arrive at The Therapy Pod, I feel genuinely welcomed. The caretakers of the animals and the land offer such warmth, care, and respect for this place, and I feel deeply grateful for them. Their presence, along with the animals and the natural surroundings, helps me settle and arrive fully before my work begins. When I feel supported and grounded, I can offer that same presence and care to those who come here. This shared sense of welcome is a quiet but powerful part of what makes The Therapy Pod so special. ❤️

Duke chose the hat today 🐴
Grounded, curious, and very sure of himself.
A gentle reminder that presence can look playful, and confidence can be quiet.
Nature has a way of helping us come back to ourselves.

Taco and Mohjoe

Two very different horses, sharing the same space with ease.

No pressure. No expectation. Just presence.

This is often where healing begins. Being alongside another without needing to perform, explain, or fix anything. Letting the nervous system settle through felt safety and connection.

Horses model this so naturally. They listen with their whole bodies. They respond to what is real, not what is said.

Sometimes the most powerful moments in therapy are the quiet ones, where nothing needs to happen at all.

Wishing you a Christmas filled with moments of calm, safety, and connection. May you notice small glimmers that bring comfort and remind you that you matter. Thank you for being part of MAJ Counselling this year.

A quiet moment with a horse can change your whole nervous system.

That slow, warm breath. The deep sigh. We call it “pony breath”. It is more than soothing. Horses naturally release tension through long exhalations, and when we are close, our bodies often mirror that rhythm.

From a neuroscience perspective, this is co regulation. Human nervous systems are designed to sync with other regulated nervous systems. Through breath, sound, proximity, and subtle body cues, the nervous system can attune to a sense of safety and steadiness.

The long exhale stimulates the vagus nerve, supporting a shift out of fight or flight and into rest and connection. Heart rate can slow, muscle tone softens, and the body receives the message that it is okay to settle.

The beautiful part is we do not need to be with the horses to use this. We can practice pony breath ourselves. A slow inhale, then a long, audible sigh out. Let the exhale be longer than the inhale. It is a simple way to invite the body back into regulation, anywhere, anytime.
