Fertility Charting FERTILITY CHARTING: Resources, guidance and education. Jessie brings a warm, welcoming and empathetic nature to her programs.

Jessie Brebner is a certified Symptothermal Method Instructor with the Natural Family Planning Teachers Association of the United Kingdom. Jessie is also the creator and developer of Fertility Charting Journals – one of the first high-quality, hard backed A4 journals designed specifically for users of Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABM’s) to chart their menstrual cycles. Jessie holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of Waikato, New Zealand where she double-majored in public relations and marketing. Jessie is passionate about the power of visual media (art, animation and graphic design) to communicate reproductive health concepts. More than all of this though, Jessie has been where you are – feeling disillusioned, confused and a little scared as to how to navigate contraceptive choices. Now, Jessie spends her time working with people from all around the world to de-mystify the menstrual cycle. Jessie provides comprehensive, evidence-based education, resources and guidance to her clients as they transition off hormonal/non-hormonal contraceptives and onto the Symptothermal Method. Jessie can fully support you whether you are trying to conceive, trying to avoid pregnancy, or are interested in using the Symptothermal Method to track your hormonal health. She emphasises that nothing is “too much information” and no subject is taboo. Jessie places a massive focus on building her clients up to be the most confident versions of themselves. Clients emerge from working with Jessie with a deep understanding of not only how their menstrual cycle affects their fertility, but also how these cyclical hormonal changes affect their physical, mental and emotional health each month. Jessie says “It wasn’t until the age of 26 that I stumbled across the Symptothermal Method in a conversation with a work colleague. Prior to this I had been on the Pill for just under a year and had found that my mental health was negatively affected. I was adamant that I would not be going back onto hormonal contraceptives, but I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of inserting a foreign object into my uterus either, so I said no to the copper IUD. Being in a long-term relationship I was very reluctant to use condoms for every single sexual encounter – I was left feeling so “stuck” about what to do next. Finding out about the Symptothermal Method changed the course of my life. It left me massively empowered, but it also left me angry. I had a lot of questions as to why I had not been taught the science of my menstrual cycle earlier (either by the school health education system or by the many GP’s I saw throughout my early adulthood). I was soon to find that, although the Symptothermal Method is proven highly effective in clinical trials, it’s not commonly taught in Medical School – so my GP knew less about it than I did! This led me to where I am today – a certified instructor of the Symptothermal Method of Fertility Awareness. I hope I can be a light that guides others forward on their journey toward reproductive empowerment through education." Jessie is based on the Gold Coast of Australia, but hosts consults and coaching online to people all around the world. Jessie also speaks locally on the menstrual cycle at community and corporate functions.

Did your GP ever tell you that the Symptothermal Method was only 76% effective?

If so, they weren't giving you the full story 👀

Discover where that 76% figure came from, and why it DOESN'T actually reflect the effectiveness of the Symptothermal Method here:

How effective is the Symptothermal Method for natural contraception? Studies show it may be up to 99.6% effective with perfect use.

VIDEO SERIES: CAN THE MOON CAUSE "DOUBLE OVULATION"?

For those following along, I've just released Part TWO of this video series 😊

Join me as I uncover how “Natal Lunar Cycles” proponents misappropriate scientific research to push their own narrative.

In today’s video, we learn about Dr Roger Pierson and his team’s research out of Canada. They discovered that we have multiple waves of follicle development during our menstrual cycle. BUT here’s the kicker: “multiple waves of follicle growth” does NOT mean “multiple ovulations”.

VIDEO SERIES: CAN THE MOON CAUSE “DOUBLE OVULATION”?

As a FABM instructor, it is so frustrating to see people spreading wild myths on social media. And lately I’ve seen people resurrecting the old myth that the MOON can cause us to ovulate twice in a single menstrual cycle 🙃

Oftentimes, people who promote this myth are profiting off telling us that our bodies are “too mysterious” to ever understand. Just last week I saw a video go out to 80k people implying they needed to purchase an app to track their moon ovulations to ensure they wouldn’t experience unintended pregnancy 😑

To combat this, I’ve put together a three-part video series. It is really comprehensive, in a long-form video format, and covers:

👉What is Natal Lunar Cycles?
👉Who developed this theory, and why?
👉Is "double ovulation" physiologically possible?
👉What does the science say?
👉How have "Natal Lunar Cycles" proponents misinterpreted scientific evidence to fit their narrative?
👉What evidence do we have for a single ovulatory event per menstrual cycle?
👉If the moon can't cause us to ovulate twice, is there anything else that it CAN do?
👉How might our circadian rhythm, light exposure, melatonin production, light pollution, and seasonality impact our menstrual cycles?

Here is PART ONE. I hope it’s helpful – especially if you ever need to share evidence with people to explain that we only ovulate once per menstrual cycle!

SAVE THIS POST!

Did you know that pregnancy gestation is counted from the first day of your last period?

This can be *really* confusing for people who are newly pregnant!

ZOOM IN - use your fingers to zoom in on this diagram.

Pregnancy is said to “officially” begin when the fertilised egg implants into the uterine wall. This usually occurs on average around 8-9 days past ovulation.

However, instead of counting pregnancy gestation from the moment of implantation, we count from the first day of your last period! This is because it’s not possible for most of us out in the real world to know exactly when a fertilised egg implants into our uterus.

Counting from the first day of our last period, pregnancy is usually estimated to last 40 weeks.

Now where we can run into some problems is the fact that when we count from the first day of our last period, we are *assuming* that all people ovulate 2 weeks later.

Unfortunately, this simply isn’t true. The timing of ovulation varies widely among different people (and even for the same person between different menstrual cycles). While one person might ovulate on Cycle Day 12, another might not ovulate until Cycle Day 36 - especially when we factor in conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which can cause irregular cycles.

The variability of follicular phase length and timing of ovulation, means that counting our pregnancy gestation from the first day of our last period can result in inaccurate due date estimates!

To get around this, as a Fertility Awareness Educator I recommend doing the following instead:

~ Charting your cycle with the Symptothermal Method while trying to conceive
~ Counting 266 raised temperatures/days from ovulation to estimated due date (approx. 38 weeks)

AND FINALLY - remember that only around 5% of babies are even born on their due date, anyway! It’s much more useful to tell people a “due month” instead. This is because a full term pregnancy can take anywhere between 37 - 42 weeks (measured from the first day of your last period).
