Don’t cross train by training in other Martial Arts while you are learning Kung fu.. Concentrate on your system and master it.. But to get fit and keep fit learn to practise another fitness discipline. I love sports so I train chasing a ball around with Soccer or tennis to get my Fitness..
You may enjoy swimming, or running or cycling, but whatever you do, stay away from injuries and protect your body. Injury is the leading cause of people missing out on becoming good at Martial Arts.. Avoid injury and train your aerobic fitness to become fitter and stronger at your Martial Arts. Don’t be lazy, get stuck in and spend the time pushing yourself everyday.
All the best in your own training..

Keep this video yourself, it's one of our Chow Gar Mantis secrets....

When conditioning the weapons of the body it's important to remember that your hand and legs must be conditioned to such an extent that you do not do damage to yourself when you hit. Correct conditioning is so important to withstanding the effect of a hit and being able to hit many times without hurt or damage to yourself. If you hurt your weapons in a fight, you cannot continue and that can be very dangerous!

Many different martial arts condition themselves in hundreds of various ways. Chow gar types of conditioning are very unique and secret and have been hidden from outsiders for generations. These ways of training have kept the Chow gar practitioner strong and effective and allow us to train long into our golden years without damaging the body. The body actually gets much tougher and last much longer, but it must be done under supervision and correct guidance.

Please do not try this stuff on your own for extended periods, you may cause permanent damage to yourself.

The uniqueness of our style and the secrets that are held tight are many in numbers, over 10,000 various secrets and ways of training for fighting that are tried and true ancient Shaolin temple ways of training. Only a skilled Sifu can show you these ways correctly, and look to him for a strong body first, if he is old and has it, he can pass it on. If your teachers' body is ruined, do not follow that way.

All the best in your own training journey.

In Chow Gar Mantis fist system, the accent is on self defence and the ability to fight. Everything that is trained daily and month in and year out has to be geared towards the sharpening of your tool set.

A huge part of this sharpening has to be the ability to Spar. Sparring between students must be done in a safe manner. (well as safe as possible considering) The ability to fight comes from relentless hours in the school, working on your martial fighting skills, but you must be shown how to Spar and how to Spar in a manner whereas your skills increase in all various ways.

It is easy to train set drills, partnered work and set patterns, but the skill that comes with Sparring where another man is trying to hit you back and nothing is scripted and you must use what you have been taught in live action, is a training regime that must be worked on very regularly.

My philosophy is this, "If you can't Spar you can't fight". The understanding of how a person moves and positions himself and the unpredictability of using your footwork and techniques against a live person is where you really get to see if what you have been training has any real use. Yes, you might get lucky in a self defence situation and defeat someone untrained, or drunk or doesn't know much about fighting, but your level will stay very low without Sparring, and Sparring with different partners regularly.

Then, is the Sparring you're doing effective? If not, why not? If you get beaten very easily by your partner, are you being taught various ways of improving your Sparring (fighting) ability? There are many ways to train Sparring and working on different areas of a fight possibility.

In the video below I had the lovely experience of helping the Italian branch of Chow Gar, to spend a night with them explaining various fighting and Sparring ways and means. Every experienced fighter since the beginning of fighting has Sparred to get better. From Achillis in ancient Greece to Shaolin monks of China to the swordsman of medieval England and so on, you get the point.

Please be sure to spend the time and actually Spar with each other and figure out ways of improving your Kung Fu. When you first begin it will be awkward and pretty bad. But with some good instruction and a step by step plan of improving your Sparring you will soon be fighting so good that most people you Spar will feel like beginners.

It will take time, so be patient, and remember, I am always happy to help with advice and instruction. I wish everyone all the best in their own training.

The conditioning of the body in Chow Gar mantis fist is one of our very important training methods within our system. Firstly, you need to condition your weapons like your hands, forearms, feet, and shins - these are the first weapons on the Mantis when you begin, as these must be hard enough to hit a hard object (Head) without hurting your hand or need for wrapping or gloves. In a street fight there will be no protection or padding so a student should prepare their weapons and body to handle the power in their hits without damage.

Once this is completed then you can move onto conditioning the other parts of the body like the legs, back, shoulders, front body, chest, neck, testicle retraction and various bones around the body. This style of conditioning is twofold in application. First, to be able to withstand strikes from an opponent and to keep fighting and second, to allow you to defend less as you do not need to be concerned with many various kicks or punches from an opponent. If you are conditioned well, the areas you need to protect are much less, (head only) and this will allow you to attack more and to not be so concerned with most of your opponent's attacks.

The structure and training of the body develop a very strong and cohesive connection which will in turn produce more power as well. Each training method used in Chow Gar Mantis is designed to strengthen the body and to aid in fighting ability and hitting power.

Over thousands of years these training methods have been refined to a point whereas they condition the body to the upmost protection and strength but ensure that mobility and power is maintained. Also, these methods boost your health and wellbeing into older age rather than denigrate. Hard to understand but due to the nature of our conditioning methods the body's health is prolonged and strengthened and kept into old age if trained correctly.

After 40 years of Chow Gar body conditioning, I have found that there is no evidence of that conditioning shown on the surface of my body. There are no callouses on my bones, there has never been a broken bone or any sign of that conditioning that can been seen. Our conditioning is done in such a way that it becomes more internal, in which cannot be seen by another person. My organs, bones, muscular structure and white tissue strength is immensely much more dense and powerful and can handle high stress of training, sparring and also the high intensity of various ball sport rigors, as I have been an active competitive soccer player and tennis player for over 30 years.

Such is the deep understanding and passed history of correct training in Chow Gar Mantis Kung Fu, it is difficult to see and must be felt to be believed in most cases.

This is some of the reasons why correct training and instruction is required in the traditional methods, so you may avoid injuries and adverse degradation of your body into your older years.

The video below briefly discusses and explains correct structure even at a beginner's level and how to avoid incorrect posture, your spine correction is so important to your overall health and Kung Fu ability. More videos to follow into the future as a helping hand for all Chow Gar practitioners as I am always happy to help and pass on all the beautiful treasures of our system.

I wish you all the best in your own training and I am always here to help.

A re post from the past...

Posted on behalf of Grandmaster Ng Si Kay.

This is the original official system of Chow Gar Mantis - beginner to intermediate level - courtesy to Chow Gar Mantis Association (International) Chief Instructor Grandmaster Ng Si-kay documenting it in 1972 - endorsed by late Great-grandmaster Ip Shui

The following is the background to how it came to be created.

"In 1972, Sitaigung and Sigung Ng Si Kay were having afternoon tea with two of Sitaigung’s friends at Chin Chin Bar in Hyatt Regency Hong Kong (former Hotel President) in Tsimshashui. During the course of it, one of Sitaugung’s friends suggested to do a black-and-white documentation of the forms and air training of Chow Gar Mantis for that the depth and extensiveness of the style would require constant referencing upon occasions, it would be a much handier reference to have as a separate list, as opposed to flipping though the pages of the actual manuscript by Sijo Lau Shui himself, documenting the complete set of the system (In preservation of the manuscript as a relic). Sitaigung agreed and commissioned the compilation of the list at that very instant and wanted to see it done at the earliest possibility; hence requested a few pieces of A4 paper with the hotel letterhead printed on one side from the hotel manager on duty, and kickstarted the documentation.
Sitaigung instructed Sigung on which part to document and with a few drafts back and forth, the said list has been compiled in half a month’s time and got endorsed with Sitaigung’s personal seal on the spot (the exact attitude to get things done right then was what propelled the style forward as the world know of it now - Chow Gar Mantis)"

This signed and sealed document with the Chop seal of Ip Shui the late grandmaster of our system shows the first 2 stages of our system and the first 17 forms, plus all weapon forms and various air sets and training sets. It is an historical document proving the exact methods to train and what forms and weapons are in this system. This helps the dedicated student uncover the real Chow Gar and what is correct training and what is newly added to the system by some Sifu's in the modern era. Transparency is key to your own training, so you may know the path you prefer to take. My path is traditional method, and it has served me well in my abilities under Si Gung Ng Si Kay.

My life has been dedicated to training this system and I am so grateful I got the good fortune to learn this system into the highest levels. I am very happy to pass this information on to good Sifu's willing to learn. So is the Grandmaster Ng Si Kay.

This next generation of Chow gar will be more open to everyone so that we may see the system last into further generations right into the advanced levels. It is my duty and honour to do this. There is so much to learn and I am happy to share.

06/02/2026

This is why we follow the Grandmaster Si Gung Ng Si Kay.

He has learned directly from the late great grandmaster Ip Shui from 17 years old starting in 1957. He has since dedicated over 60 years following his father in laws path and the teachings as they were directly transmitted.

Not only was this passed to him via direct closed door tutelage but Si Gung Ng Si Kay also had the intellectual fortitude to not only learn and further explore and develop the highest levels of the system but also had the wisdom and foresight to be able to document and record the process and development of the system and how it should be trained to foster these highest levels including the various powers, gung developments and internal methods. He was given the entire system by his father law Ip Shui, as he was a keen dedicated student for many years. He married Ip Shui oldest daughter and also had the first grand child for the family. Grandmaster Ng Si Kay was also the first student to open a branch school for Ip Shui as well in 1969. All this is reasoning why Ip Shui looked upon him with great fondness and was finally happy to teach the entire system. No one before grandmaster Ng Si Kay or after him was taught the entire system by Ip Shui.

To put it plainly, Si Gung Ng Si Kay is the most experienced, the most knowledgeable and the most qualified. He also embodies many of the characteristics of a true martial artist and kung fu man as represented in the culture that kung fu is founded upon: a family man, a man of good moral character and a man of wisdom, intelligence and diligence. He is also a man of integrity and tradition who is happy to pass on what he has learnt..

To further understand this though, we would need to explain and discuss what it means to be a Sifu/ Sigung and what it truly means to be a holder or keeper of this system in full. For 40 years I have followed this system and I have seen many masters and touched hands and been taught by. I speak from experience and time put in. I do not make things up or tell lies about this style, i do my best to keep it pure like Si Gung has taught.

This is why I will call Grandmaster Ng Si Kay my Si Gung, as he has improved my kung fu and shown me the way, and continues to lead with advice and guidance. A title is important, and I believe people earn their titles, they can not just be given away like candy. Si Gung Ng Si Kay embodies what a real Kung Fu grandmaster should be. Someone I choose to follow for his character, skill and knowledge in Chow Gar Mantis Kung Fu.
