We also made this video to help people understand the meaning behind Fut Sow the 6th Form in the system. Fut Sow in Cantonese can translate to "Buddha Hand" but it also translates to the Horse Hair whip action "Whisk hand". The horse haired whip was used traditionally to keep the flies away, and later used as a weapon in some systems of Kung Fu. The Whip is called "Chuen Fut" and can be found in various supply shops in Hong Kong. Sometimes people would hide sharp blades in the hair of the Chuen Fut Whip, and it would be a very inconspicuous dangerous weapon. The Fut Sow form is the 6th form of the system and later into the advanced levels there is also a second Fut sow form which is an advancement on the original form.

November 2024, we journeyed again to Hong Kong for another training fortnight with Grandmaster Ng Si Kay. We worked hard each day training in the headquarters as well as training at various parks in Hong Kong. In the videos below I ask The grandmaster to answer some questions from Australian students. My personal goal and aim in this kung fu system is to give this system to everyone wanting it. I know there are many hard working, dedicated martial men and women in Australia that love this system of Kung fu. Many people that have trained for many years and enjoy learning and improving. This is my wish, which is to help anyone who loves this system in anyway I can. I have been very fortunate over these 40 years of training and teaching Chow Gar, and my heart loves to pass this stuff on to good hearted, dedicated people who have a huge passion for Southern Praying Mantis Kung fu. This video only explains and corrects certain terms commonly used in Australia, but the real intent is to help and give back what this system has given me. This is just the beginning …

So 2023 was full of training, learning and developing myself, the students and the system. We went to Hong Kong twice in 2023, April and November visiting the headquarters and working on advanced stuff. Was very lovely learning from Si Ba Gung Ng Si Kay, he really puts in the effort to show, explain and correct your Kung fu.

In December 2022, I decided it was time..

After over a Decade of running a public Chow Gar School at Southport on the Gold Coast with many great memories and wonderful times, I sold the property and decided to become soley a closed door, private teacher.

It was time to concentrate, intensify and develop. I continued to teach only a select group of 15 students and develop them into the higher levels of this system. To concentrate on their quality, individualise the training and intensify the more finer aspects of this style.

I also wanted to concentrate more on my training with my senior students, as I was still developing the higher powers, forms and training regimes of the advanced parts of the system.

We were now back to travelling to Hong Kong more regularly and training under Si Ba Gung Ng Si Kay and his students, as well as travelling to Brisbane weekly and training with the seniors there and doing privates classes as well.

All training and learning had been stepped up to another level and I needed good strong, well trained students to work with each week.

It was an end of an era but a transformation into a new style of training, as all students in the private classes were 6th level and above and had been with me for many years..

We were no longer taking beginners into the school and spending the time training
More advanced parts of the system.

I have put together another video of Si Hing Damon’s grading for 10th level. This was a very long grading. To date I have only graded 4 students that have passed this grading over 13 years..

07/08/2025

31st of August 2021 - Si Hing Damon Milne graded for his 10th Level. I think the video shows most, so doesn’t need much explanation, Damon is a great student, he is loyal, a man of good character and a very tough, strong kung fu man. His dedication to this system and to his classmates and to his Sifu is exemplary, and will be always cherished. Well done 4 years ago Si Hing Damon, onwards and upwards…
Please excuse the bad quality of video, thx.. 🙏

In 2021, After 9 years from opening the school, it was time to prepare my top 3 students for their 10th level grading. It has been a tradition in Australia to put the students who reach 10th level through the hardest of gradings, so they may prove their ability in the kung fu system and knowledge, their endurance and perseverance and their fighting skill level through sparring.

I have kept this same process with my students exactly the same way I had to endure and experience. This grading can be life changing and one of the biggest challenges a student can undergo. I still tell the story of my grading for my 10th level as insight and inspiration for students to aim for. A grading that will never be forgotten.

This 10th level grading encompasses over 4 hours of hard work. Starting with showing all internal air exercises (30 mins), then participating in a 2-hour class of strenuous training with the group, this is purposefully a very hard training session. Then a 4km run after the class finishes (20 mins), followed by performing all forms and weapons drills up to 10th level. If any mistakes, the forms must be repeated until they are full power and no mistakes. Forms may be repeated continuously until correct. (usually about 40 Mins). Lastly, comes the Sparring session. This consists of 12 rounds of 2 mins with a 30 sec break. Sparring 4 students one at a time and rotating through them so they stay relatively fresh. (40 mins).. This grading is not for the weak minded or faint hearted. But after being trained correctly, these students should be able to endure. (side note: the break between each section of this grading is very small, usually 1 to 2 mins)

I make it a point to let the students know what they are in for, so they prepare in advance. I also train them extra lessons privately one on one for up to 2 months to prepare them fully for Sparring, endurance and hardness of body and mind. I do not take it easy on them.

Below is a video of Damon and myself light Sparring to prepare him which we took in July 2021 while I was preparing Damon for his grading that was coming up. I also believe the preparation should be harder than the grading. Train hard to fight easy is my motto. Damon Milne is a fierce, strong, powerful Kung fu man with great strength of mind and character. He is always working on his Kung Fu, and he worked extra hard to prepare for his grading. Anyone who has trained with Damon or Sparred with him knows he has put the work in and is as Hard as stone. This video was just part of the process to help his development.

To be continued.....

Between 2018 and up to 2020 when Covid hit, I also decided to start a new Kids Kung fu class. My Daughter Naomi was now 6 years old, and the school was thriving, so why not?

I really wanted my daughter to experience what her dad did almost every day, and answer questions like, why was he leaving home in the afternoons and coming home late at night. So, we got together a group of about 16 kids aged between 5 and 11 years old and started a once a week class on a Monday afternoon. Some of my students bought their own kids along to join the class and also stayed to help take the class with me. Brad, Justin and Nick. (Thank you)

I set up a training schedule that would suit kids, where it was fun, kid friendly, painless, but with the core of the kung fu being taught. Over an 18-month period until Covid hit, they graded twice, learnt 1st and 2nd form and started on third form, practised pole work, practised pad work, we played fun kung fu games, and learnt about staying safe in public and at home.

I must say it was a load of fun, the kids loved it, and my daughter Naomi saw her dad in a different light. I was so proud of Naomi conquering fears of doing things in front of other people, and she became my little kung fu assistant to demonstrate techniques that we would practise at home before class.

The classes stopped and I closed the kids' classes due to Covid and we never restarted them, but those times will remain a very memorable part of the Kung fu journey, and I know all the kids got some very beneficial understandings from the training.. Many contacted me after Covid and were very sad that the kids' classes didn't continue but some very fun times and great memories for everyone involved.....

A quick intermission from the 40th anniversary memories ..

Congratulations goes to these students for passing their 6th level grading and finishing the first stage of this system, Nick and Jack have been training for the last few years and have finally reached their first milestone. Well done boys.
And a special congratulations goes to Brian, as in the last several months he has worked hard to push through, train hard and learn 3 levels as a catch up. Passing his 6th, 7th and 8th level grading all in one night. He has trained for many years in this system and deserves his achievements to date..

Well done to these students, much more to come.. Next, Matt Tang will prepare and grade for his 10th level over the next couple of months..

Remembering 40 years of Chow gar kung fu training continued .. 40th anniversary...

In 2020, the world locked down due to COVID. Don’t get me started on that subject.. So we had to close the school down for a few months and classes were on hold at our Southport headquarters. But nothing stops me training! So I set up a temporary training area in a shed I had at my house and invited only my top students to train to keep up our kung fu. I even got padding for the floor so we could Hard Spar, including take downs and practise more Chin Na (Chinese grappling) etc. I also used this time to focus on documenting my forms and weapons. So, I spent the time working on everything, filming it so as to never forget, and keeping it for prosperity's sake. I have continued filming forms to this day to keep as a record. I have also documented in writing each stage of the system with every excercise, jong, form, air set etc.. and continue to update as needed. The private training with my seniors was great as I was able to work them hard to start preparing them for their 10th level gradings, which were coming up very soon. Brad, Damon and Mary were on the way to becoming my first students to grade for 10th level. The Covid period was a period of documentation, senior training, hard sparring and working on many things sometimes you don’t get the time for. Unfortunately the world was locked down, and no more Hong Kong trips for now, but we kept in contact and I sent lucky gifts (traditional) to make sure Si Ba Gung Ng Si Kay knew we were thinking of him and his family during this tough period. Video below is a small snippet of some of the training and documentation I did during that time.

The grinding arm practise shown in the videos below was to explain and show the seniors how the power in the system can keep growing stronger and stronger almost without limitation. Also, as you get stronger and connection to the whole body, the power can be utilised in a small stance, even no stance, and still be strong. The power does not require tension in the arm, so the arm can stay relaxed so it may move faster without restriction from tension. Even the fingers can have much power and must also connect to the body as shown. Most things in this system have to be felt by the hand to understand and believe..

In May 2019, we took a small contingent of Brisbane students and Gold Coast students to visit Grandmaster Ng Si Kay in his hometown of Hong Kong. We took a 2 week training trip, to be taught by Si Ba Gung at the Hong Kong Headquarters and the Late Ip Shui's family home, where students have been training for over 5 decades. I took my 3 most advanced students at the time, Damon Milne, Brad Hood and Mary Ricci. These guys had been training for nearly 7 years with me and it was their first visit to Hong Kong and visiting the school and being trained by the grandmaster and also training with his students as well.

It was fantastic to take them to Hong Kong and show them the things I experienced only 17 years earlier in 2002. I hadn't been back to HK since and it was amazing, almost like nothing had changed. Si Ba Gung was healthy and strong and showing us many new things, partnered training, new forms, new power training, shock power training and heaps more including much air (Gung) training..

I took my students to the rooftop to train up there as well. We spent a day visiting the grave of Lau Shui and the graves of Ip Shui and his wife as well. We did some touristy stuff, visited Macau, went to the peak and then trained some more. We trained a lot and then went to Yum Cha every day after training. We trained weekends, weekdays, nights and by the end of it we were very spent. Sore, tired, aching but with a new wealth of knowledge to train once we return to Australia. This trip was one of the best trips we did overall and exciting for the first timers to visit.

To train with the Hong Kong students was great too, they were strong and tough and great training partners to work with. They are all lovely people and were very kind and nice to us and made us feel very welcome while we were in Hong Kong. What an experience. A special mention to Lawrence Ng (Ng Si Kays Son) he looked after us during Yum Cha and is a very lovely man. Leng Jai!

We met so many lovely people and this trip was very memorable in so many ways.

(On a side note: SiFu Jeremy and SiFu Arthur had closed their schools in late 2018 and early 2019 respectively due to personal reasons and also decided to go their own way regarding training. Which is why you do see them in the pictures above.)

Both students from Newmarket and Gold Coast all got on well together, trained hard, even trained extra in the HK parks in the afternoons, there was plenty of shopping and plenty of laughs to go along with the great comradeship on this trip.

This would be the first of many trips to Hong Kong from now on..
