My Personal Midwife Top tips and information on caring for yourselves and your newborn baby

15/10/2025

Caring for a baby is beautiful, but itโ€™s also hard. The nights can feel endless โ€” especially when your little one wonโ€™t settle in their cot and only wants to be held.

Please remember: ๐Ÿ’› this is just a phase. It is normal, It will pass, and little by little, things will get easier.

Here are some gentle tips to help you cope through the night ๐ŸŒ™
(PS: theyโ€™re not miracle cures โ€” just small ways to make the nights a little softer.)

Be kind to yourself. ๐Ÿ’›
Itโ€™s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, tearful, or irritable โ€” the early days are hard.

๐ŸคฑHold your baby close โ€” if thatโ€™s what they want, just surrender to it.
Sometimes trying to put them down only makes everyone more stressed.
So snuggle in, put your favourite show on, put your feet up,
and enjoy those precious cuddles. ๐Ÿค

(.)(.)Offer feeds frequently.
Even if the baby didnโ€™t seem interested five minutes ago, they may want to feed again soon โ€” this is normal newborn behaviour.

๐Ÿซถ Ask for help.
If you have support around you, please use it.
Let your family and friends help with meals, housework, or holding baby so you can rest and stay nourished.
Keep snacks and drinks within reach, and take things one feed at a time.

โš ๏ธ Safety reminder:
If youโ€™re ever unsure whether your baby is feeding well or getting enough milk, please reach out to your midwife or health care professional
And remember โ€” itโ€™s not safe to sleep with your baby on the sofa. Always make sure your rest area is safe.

You are doing an incredible job โ€” and you donโ€™t have to do it alone. ๐Ÿ’•

Spring is here and the sun is shining ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒž

It's important to keep your baby safe while enjoying the sunshine. Follow these top tips from The raising children network

๐ŸŒž Keep your newborn in the shade whenever possible.

๐ŸŒž Dense shade that casts a dark shadow offers the most protection from UV rays.

๐ŸŒž If shade isnโ€™t available, create your own with an umbrella or sunshade.

๐ŸŒžNever cover a pram with a blanket or cloth โ€“ it blocks airflow and can dangerously overheat your baby.

๐ŸŒž In the car, use window shades or legally approved tinting to reduce sun exposure.

๐ŸŒž Choose sun-protective clothing (UPF 50+) for maximum protection.

๐ŸŒž Fabrics should be tightly woven โ€“ if you can see a lot of light through them, UV can get through too.

๐ŸŒž Cotton and loose-fitting clothes are cooler and more comfortable than tight or synthetic fabrics.

๐ŸŒž Pick a soft, comfortable hat with straps to help it stay on.

๐ŸŒž Straps should be safe: avoid long ties that pose a choking hazard.

๐ŸŒž Use safety snaps or trim/tie straps securely behind your babyโ€™s head.

๐ŸŒž Some babies resist hats โ€“ keep trying until it becomes part of their routine.

๐ŸŒž Sunscreen use

๐ŸŒž Under 6 months: Sunscreen isnโ€™t recommended. Use shade, clothing, and hats instead.

๐ŸŒžOver 6 months: Use a sunscreen labelled โ€œfor babiesโ€ or โ€œsensitiveโ€, as these are less likely to cause irritation.

๐ŸŒžAlways do a patch test on a small area of skin before wider use.
