Nail Polish: Pretty, But At What Cost?
Your regular mani might be exposing you to more than just style.
Many conventional nail polishes contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde (a known carcinogen), toluene (linked to nervous system damage), and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (a hormone disruptor). These are absorbed through the nails and inhaled during application, especially in poorly ventilated salons.
Gel and acrylic nails often involve UV lamps for curing. These emit UVA rays—the same kind linked to skin ageing and skin cancer. Repeated exposure without protection puts your hands at risk, especially over time.
Even “dip” powders and some so-called “non-toxic” products still contain questionable ingredients if you dig deeper.
Long-term risks include:
• Hormonal disruption
• Allergic reactions
• Respiratory irritation
• Increased risk of skin and even reproductive cancers with chronic exposure
Protect your health:
• Look for polishes labeled “7-free” or “10-free”
• Use gloves or sunscreen during UV treatments
• Avoid inhaling fumes—ventilation matters
• Give your nails regular breaks
Beauty shouldn’t come with a toxic load. You deserve safer options.
