Sunshine is a great source of vitamin D which is essential for bone health, the immune system, mood regulation and much more.

However, the sun can also be damaging for the skin, contributing to skin cancers,
ageing and wrinkles. So if your tempted to bask in the sun, always make sure that you are sun protected with the use of protective clothing, sunscreen of at least SPF30 and avoiding the peak times between 10am-3pm.

I am delighted to have been offered to study for a PhD at Bond University. My topic of research will be looking at how Artificial Intelligence can be used in General Practice to improve healthcare outcomes.

Drawing on my passion for private and ethical use of patient data, the research will help to shape future policy around the use of AI in medicine.

Alongside my studies, I will continue to practice clinical medicine and you can follow along with my progress on these channels.

In a quiet moment, I picked up Better, a book exploring excellence in medicine and overcoming challenges that are met. One chapter highlights three qualities essential for performing well:

๐Ÿ“š Diligence - attention to detail matters deeply.
๐Ÿ“š Doing Right - aligning actions with ethics and purpose.
๐Ÿ“š Ingenuity - thinking creatively through reflection and curiosity.

While these principles are rooted in medicine, I also think they can be applied in life to improve our outlook and successes.

Bad Breath? ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Whilst having a bad breath can be normal from time to time, especially after eating strong foods like garlic and onions. Sometimes it can be a sign of an underlying medical condition especially if it isnโ€™t going away despite your best measures. Here are some causes of bad breath that need addressing with a doctor:

- Diabetes increases the risk of gum disease which can cause bad breath. However, having a fruity breath smell can also mean you have a medical emergency called ketoacidosis.
- Reflux disease, this causes stomach acid to leak back into your gullet and sometimes your mouth.
- Kidney or liver disease can also be a culprit.
- Smoking changes the balance of microbes in your mouth and can increase the risk of oral health issues.
- Poor oral hygiene such as gum disease and plaque formation can contribute to bad smells.

So, if you canโ€™t shake the smell, be sure to see your local doctor for a check up.
