Movember and Acupuncture: A Powerful Duo for Men’s Health!

Movember is an annual event in November dedicated to raising awareness around men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges. This global movement encourages men to grow mustaches as a visible way to support the cause and spark conversations. But while the iconic mustache is the face of Movember, the month also highlights the importance of comprehensive approaches to men’s well-being—beyond just the physical.

Acupuncture, an ancient practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), offers a valuable and complementary approach to some of the same issues Movember aims to address. Here’s how:

1. Prostate Health
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, and Movember raises awareness around its detection and treatment. While acupuncture doesn’t treat cancer directly, studies have shown it can be beneficial for managing some of the side effects of prostate cancer treatment, including pain, urinary issues, and fatigue. Acupuncture may also help boost the immune system, which can be especially valuable for men undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.

2. Mental Health and Stress Management
Mental health is a major focus of Movember, as many men struggle with stress, anxiety, and depression, often in silence. Acupuncture can be a powerful tool for mental health, offering a drug-free way to manage stress, ease anxiety, and improve mood. Through gentle stimulation of certain points, acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system, reduce cortisol levels, and encourage the release of endorphins—helping men feel more balanced and resilient.

3. Pain Management and Physical Wellness
Physical pain, whether from chronic issues or specific injuries, is a common concern for many men. Acupuncture is widely recognized for its effectiveness in pain management, offering relief from conditions like back pain, joint pain, and headaches. By reducing inflammation and promoting circulation, acupuncture can be a valuable option for men dealing with pain, helping them stay active and engaged.

4. Hormonal Balance and Sexual Health
Acupuncture is also known to help with hormonal balance and may support sexual health concerns, including libido and sexual performance. For men, acupuncture can be used to support reproductive health by stimulating specific points that influence testosterone levels and improve overall energy flow in the body. This approach can be especially helpful for men dealing with fatigue or stress-related issues that affect their sexual health.

A Holistic Approach to Movember
As we embrace Movember, it’s crucial to remember that men’s health encompasses a wide spectrum. Physical health, mental resilience, and overall wellness are all connected, and acupuncture offers a unique way to address these areas holistically. By combining the power of Movember’s awareness mission with the benefits of acupuncture, we can foster a more comprehensive approach to men’s health that supports body, mind, and spirit.

So, as you grow out your mustache this November or support someone who is, consider looking into acupuncture as a valuable part of the journey to better health.

Breathe Easy with Acupuncture: A Natural Solution for Allergic Rhinitis!

Are seasonal allergies wreaking havoc on your daily life? Is sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes becoming unbearable? If you’re seeking a natural and effective way to manage allergic rhinitis, look no further than our acupuncture clinic on the Gold Coast.

A recent systematic review has shown that acupuncture is a promising solution for relieving allergy sufferers and significantly improving their quality of life (He et al., 2022).

Benefits of Acupuncture for Allergic Rhinitis:

• Relief from Nasal Symptoms: Acupuncture may reduce sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and a runny nose, providing much-needed relief from allergic rhinitis symptoms.

• Reduced Reliance on Medications: One of the most significant advantages of acupuncture is that it can help decrease the dependence on conventional medications like antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids, which often come with unwanted side effects.

• Holistic Approach: Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that targets the symptoms and addresses the root cause of allergic rhinitis. Promoting the body’s natural healing mechanisms helps restore balance and boost well-being.

• Safe and Non-Invasive: Unlike some medications, acupuncture is generally well-tolerated, with minimal risk of adverse effects. When performed by a registered acupuncturist, you can confidently experience this ancient healing practice.

• Sustainable Relief: The effects of acupuncture for allergic rhinitis can be long-lasting, providing sustainable relief throughout the allergy season and beyond.

Here at Haynes Acupuncture Gold Coast we like to think, eat and live by the seasons. In Spring, we take a look at how we can best support our bodies. In Chinese medicine, Liver is the Yin organ and the Gallbladder is the Yang organ. Often there is an increase in irritability, anxiety and depression throughout spring and with anger being the emotion of the liver, it is wise to do what we can to nourish it and therefore avoid qi (energy) stagnation!

Emotions such as anger or rage seriously impact the flow of qi and can easily block or obstruct qi flow. Protracted unresolved obstructions lead to development of internal heat such as heated emotions.

The sour flavour associated with the liver is astringent and contracting, which gathers fluids and protects the blood. Unhealthy eating habits, strong emotions such as aggression, anger and rage, as well as a hectic and stressful lifestyle produce liver heat and impair liver function.

So, what should we eat?

Foods that get the energy up and moving and support the liver remove heat and stagnation, whilst supporting the spleen. In general, foods that are good for spring are warm ascending sweet foods. In early spring, try cabbage, sweet potato, carrot and beetroot. As the weather changes, move to mint, sweet rice, shiitake mushrooms, peas, sunflower seeds, pine nuts and in late spring, cherries.

Gently warming and pungent foods are particularly good for spring. These include fennel, oregano, rosemary, caraway, dill, bay leaf, grains, legumes and seeds. Pungent flavored foods stimulate circulation of qi and blood, moving energy up and out.

What else can we do to stay vital this Spring?

Keep moving! Your liver loves movement, so get out in this beautiful weather for a walk!
Spring clean! We know, so cliché, but it allows the new to come in, releasing the old, creating harmony & allowing fresh starts, just as nature intended!
Forgiveness! Whilst we’re letting go of things and clearing things out, try it emotionally too. Resentment and anger feeds into the liver and causes damage and qi stagnation.

If you are wanting to find out how we can help you, an initial consultation will determine your own personal treatment plan and set you on a path back to health, please give us a call on (07) 5531 6461 or email us on info@haynesacupuncture.com.au

In the recent year or two, we have seen an influx of Bell’s Palsy patients at Haynes Acupuncture on the Gold Coast. This article is to help inform Gold Coast people about the management of Bell’s Palsy using acupuncture.

Bell’s Palsy is a condition that can be debilitating, affecting facial muscles and causing paralysis or weakness on one side of the face. Traditional treatments often involve medication or physical therapy, but an alternative approach, acupuncture, has gained traction for its effectiveness. This ancient Chinese practice, dating back thousands of years, has shown promising results in alleviating the symptoms of Bell’s Palsy. David’s experience working in a Chinese ward, where he treated hundreds of patients with Bell’s Palsy using acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, sheds light on the effectiveness of this modality.

Understanding Acupuncture:
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. These points correspond to energy pathways, or meridians, through which Qi, or vital energy, flows. By stimulating these points, acupuncture aims to restore the balance of Qi and promote healing.

How Acupuncture Treats Bell’s Palsy:
Restoring Nerve Function: Acupuncture can stimulate nerves and promote circulation, aiding in regenerating damaged facial nerves associated with Bell’s Palsy.
Reducing Inflammation: By targeting specific acupuncture points, practitioners can help reduce inflammation in the affected area, relieving swelling and pressure on facial nerves.
Improving Muscle Function: Acupuncture may help improve muscle tone and function in the face, addressing the weakness or paralysis characteristic of Bell’s Palsy.
Boosting Immune Response: Acupuncture enhances the body’s immune response, supporting overall healing and recovery from Bell’s Palsy.

David’s Experience:
David’s journey into the world of acupuncture began when he worked in a hospital ward in China, where he encountered numerous cases of Bell’s Palsy. Witnessing the limitations of conventional treatments, he was intrigued by the potential of acupuncture to address the root causes of the condition. Under the guidance of experienced practitioners, David learned the intricacies of acupuncture and its application in treating Bell’s Palsy.

Treating Hundreds of Patients:
David’s time in the Chinese ward gave him invaluable hands-on experience in treating Bell’s Palsy with acupuncture. Over time, he honed his skills and developed a personalized approach tailored to each patient’s needs. His dedication and expertise significantly improved the condition of hundreds of individuals afflicted with Bell’s Palsy.

The Future of Acupuncture in Bell’s Palsy Treatment:
As more individuals seek alternative and complementary therapies, acupuncture’s role in treating Bell’s Palsy is likely to expand. With ongoing research and clinical trials, acupuncture holds the promise of becoming a mainstream treatment option for this condition. David’s experiences underscore the potential of acupuncture to offer relief and restore function in individuals grappling with Bell’s Palsy.

Bell’s Palsy can profoundly impact one’s quality of life, but acupuncture offers a ray of hope for those seeking effective treatment. David’s journey exemplifies acupuncture’s transformative power in addressing Bell’s Palsy’s complexities. As awareness grows and practitioners refine their techniques, acupuncture is poised to emerge as a cornerstone in the holistic management of this condition, offering renewed hope and healing to countless individuals worldwide.

"I’ve been privileged to have experienced several weeks of acupuncture with Mark Sergeant at Coastal Therapies Bundall. This treatment initially for chronic back pain has been the best decision I’ve made for my physical pain and emotional well-being. I must admit I felt so much better mentally even after my first treatment and continue to feel so Highly recommend 😊"

Acupuncture during winter is one of the best ways you can boost your immune system during the colder months here on the Gold Coast.

Winter represents the most Yin aspect in Chinese Medicine. Yin is dark, cold, slow, inward energy. The time to gather strength, repair and replenish your physical and mental being. The kidney is the organ system that shares the power of Winter. Just as the bear survives upon accumulated reserves, the Kidney harbours our essence that feeds and renews our life force. The Kidney is vulnerable to damage by exposure to physical cold–cold weather or air conditioning and by the ingestion of iced or refrigerated foods and beverages. Inadequate intake of water and too much bitter, salty, or spicy foods may also be harmful. Likewise, too little sleep, excessive exercise, sexual activity, or work undermines the Kidney.

Things we recommend to keep your health on track this winter;

-Conserve and store your energy and vigour, matching the characteristics of the season. Try swapping running and the gym to more gentle movements such as walking, tai Chi, and yoga.
-Exposure to sunshine is recommended, so try these outside.
-This principle also means that you should try to keep a placid mind in winter. Try to control your mood, try to avoid getting angry and having big turbulences in emotion.
-During winter go to sleep early at night and get up after the sun has risen in the morning.
-Indoor temperature should be kept stable, somewhere between 18-22 degrees. Opening windows and ventilating rooms should not be neglected.
-To help prevent the common cold, your back needs to be protected. If the back becomes cold, you could contract an infection of the upper respiratory tract or suffer a recurrence and worsening of some lingering illnesses. It is especially important for seniors, children and people who suffer from cardiovascular diseases to keep their backs warm.
-Keeping your feet warm is important too, as they lose heat quickly. Acupuncture points on the sole of one’s feet are closely related with the internal organs, so if the feet become cold, you could a catch cold or get pains in the abdomen, waist or legs.
-Avoid food that is physically cold, this includes things straight out of the fridge such as drinks or with ice added, or ice cream. In the case of water, warm or hot water will be absorbed more effectively.
-Avoid food that are fried, greasy or sugary, including food that has been deep fried, or food with a high amount of oil, or sugar content, such as chocolate.
-Eat warming foods. Soups, slow cooked stews, cooked vegetables, squash, peas, beans, root vegetables such as potatoes, garlic and carrots.
-Surround yourself with warming colours, candles and curl up next to the fire/heater.

At our Gold Coast Acupuncture Clinic, we want to help you achieve your desired health goals to help reduce and relieve your anxiety!

Many people experience anxiety at some time in their lives, but when it becomes a daily occurrence, it can start to interfere with everyday life. You may feel unpleasant symptoms such as increased heart rate, disturbed breathing, trembling and sweating and a sense of apprehension. You may think that you cannot cope as well and that anxiety may create problems.

In Chinese medical theory, anxiety can have several causes, including emotional stress, irregular diet and overwork. Acupuncture treats the cause of anxiety rather than just the symptoms, which may lead to long-term benefits and change. A 2016 systematic review with over 400 randomised patients concluded that ‘the effects from acupuncture for treating anxiety are significant compared to conventional treatments’(Goyatá et al., 2016). Acupuncture is considered safe and gentle and can work alongside any other treatment you may receive.

Further evidence from another large study, which included 120 randomised patients, found that acupuncture significantly reduced anxiety and depression compared to conventional treatment involving pharmacological approaches and psychotherapy, with over twice the reduction in symptoms (Arvidsdotter et al., 2013).

Chinese medicine works with ‘Qi'(chee), which is understood as being a force or energy. Acupuncture aims to harmonise the flow of Qi around your body by removing blockages and facilitating its flow. Your acupuncture treatment will involve needling some acupuncture points to help you relax while treating the root cause of your anxiety.

In Chinese Medicine, we see each patient holistically, which means that we tailor the treatment to each individual, taking into account any other conditions you may have. With your acupuncturist, you can discuss how many treatments may be needed depending on the time you have been experiencing anxiety. However, many patients report seeing an immediate reduction in anxiety after their first session.

Mid-year burnout: feeling exhausted and overwhelmed? It could be seasonal burnout!

Burnout affects everyday tasks at work, or in the home if your main job involves caring for family members. Individuals with burnout symptoms feel negative about tasks, have difficulty concentrating, and often lack creativity. Together, this results in reduced performance.

Often the patients we see for acupuncture experiencing burnout are the givers, the go-getters, the doers, the risk takers and the ‘I can achieve it all’ individuals. These people are the ones who are trying to achieve everything. However, there is only so much energy to go around and as hard as they push they often find themselves burnt out.

Physical and mental symptoms of burnout can creep in unknowingly, suddenly you can’t concentrate or stay as focused for as long, you may become foggy-headed and have trouble falling or staying asleep. You may overthink everything and become increasingly irritable and angry. Some bigger physical symptoms that may present themselves are anxiety, lower back and knee pain, hormonal imbalances, premature ageing and hair loss.

Acupuncture can provide you with a designated period of time to relax. It can allow you to slow your day down and bring a sense of calm. Coastal Natural Therapies on the Gold Coast can help to alleviate stress and anxiety and it may restore your body to its natural resting state.

A more Western scientific view of acupuncture means that it:

-Down-regulates your body’s flight or fight response
-Increases your body’s natural opiates, endorphins and enkephalin hormones
-Reduces cortisol and increases serotonin, this may alleviate anxiety, depression, irritability and stress
-Promotes blood flow to the brain to improve cognitive function
-Increases circulation to relax tight muscles and reduces joint stiffness
-Improves the body’s immune system

Our practitioners are excited to help you on this recovery journey, we tailor every treatment to suit your individual needs. Book your appointment with us in our Bundall Acupuncture Clinic now on (07) 5531 6461 or email us on info@haynesacupuncture.com.au

With the temperature dropping we are seeing issues with our skin increasingly become more common. Skin conditions can range from minor irritations to chronic, debilitating issues that significantly affect an individual’s quality of life. These conditions encompass a broad spectrum, including eczema, psoriasis, acne, and more. Understanding these ailments involves recognizing their complex nature, often stemming from genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. When traditional treatments and over-the-counter remedies prove ineffective or cause unwanted side effects, many individuals turn to alternative therapies like acupuncture for relief.

The Role of Acupuncture in Skin Conditions-

Acupuncture, a time-tested traditional Chinese medicine technique, has gained recognition recently for its potential in alleviating skin conditions. Acupuncture may benefit skin health by regulating immune responses, reducing inflammation, and promoting overall well-being. While it is not a standalone solution, it can be a valuable complementary therapy for those seeking relief from skin issues.

Numerous clinical studies have explored the effectiveness of acupuncture in managing various skin conditions. While research is ongoing, some studies have shown promising results, with patients experiencing reduced symptoms and improved skin health after undergoing acupuncture treatments. These studies support the idea that acupuncture can be a valuable complementary therapy for individuals dealing with skin issues, providing them with an alternative option to explore in their quest for relief.

Suppose you are seeking relief from skin conditions and are considering acupuncture as a potential solution. In that case, we invite you to take the first step towards relief by scheduling a consultation at our clinic. During this consultation, we will discuss your specific condition, answer any questions you may have, and outline a personalized acupuncture plan that suits your needs. We support you on your journey to healthier, happier skin.
