Is heel pain causing you grief and affecting how you move?

Heel pain is one of the most common reasons people visit a podiatrist. Here are some of the most common reasons people see us for heel pain:

1️⃣ Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. It often feels like a sharp pain under the heel, especially with your first steps in the morning or after sitting for a while. Plantar fasciitis is also a common cause of arch pain too.

2️⃣ Achilles tendinopathy

Pain at the back of the heel that may worsen with running, jumping or walking uphill. It’s often linked to sudden increases in activity or load.

3️⃣ Heel spurs

These bony growths can develop over time due to ongoing strain. While the spurs themselves are not painful, the repetitive tearing of the tissue that inserts into them can cause inflammation and become very painful.

4️⃣ Sever’s disease (in kids)

Common in active children and teens during growth spurts. It causes pain at the back of the heel, especially during sport.

5️⃣ Fat pad syndrome

The natural cushioning under your heel can thin over time, leading to deep, bruise-like pain when walking on hard surfaces.

👣 Sciatica and lower limb movement 🦵

Many people assume sciatic pain comes solely from the spine, but the way your feet, ankles, knees and hips move can directly influence nerve irritation.

Misalignment or restricted joint movement in the lower limbs can change pelvic position, increase tension on nerves and contribute to ongoing discomfort.

Common signs and symptoms of sciatica:

🔷 Sharp, shooting, or burning pain down the leg
🔷 Numbness or tingling in the foot or leg
🔷 Weakness in leg muscles
🔷 Pain that worsens with sitting, walking or bending
🔷 Symptoms that improve with specific positions or movement

Addressing biomechanical issues in the lower limb can reduce sciatic symptoms and improve functional outcomes.

Early intervention with structural assessment and manual therapy can prevent minor issues from turning into chronic sciatic pain.

At Hip to Toe, we take a whole-body approach. By treating the root cause, not just the symptoms, we help you move more freely and reduce pain.

24/02/2026

Hip pain isn’t always about the hip joint. How your foot and ankle load can affect how the hip joint functions.

Changes in lower limb mechanics, such as flat feet or excessive inward knee movement, have been linked with altered pelvic alignment and pain.

People with hip pain don’t always feel the pain directly over the hip joint either. Common presentations include:

🔷 Pain the groin, outside the hip, buttocks, lower back or pain that travels down the thigh.
🔷 There could be stiffness when standing up after sitting, pain with exercise or general movement, discomfort when lying on your side at night or reduced hip range of motion.
🔷 Some people even experience limping or an altered walking pattern, reduced balance or stability, or pain that get worse with prolonged standing.

When we perform a structural assessment, we consider your entire alignment.

Restoring motion with joint mobilisation, manipulation and targeted exercises helps reduce strain through the hip and pelvis.
