🌿 What is NAIDOC Week?
NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee Week) is held every July across Australia to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2025 theme is:
“Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.”
It’s about celebrating First Nations identity, voice, strength, and resilience.

🗣️ What Does NAIDOC Week Mean for Speech Pathology?
Speech pathologists work with communication and swallowing, which are deeply connected to culture, language, and identity. NAIDOC Week is a powerful opportunity for speech pathologists to:
1. Reflect on Cultural Responsiveness
• Learn about First Nations languages, storytelling traditions, and communication styles.
• Reflect on how Western approaches to communication may not always fit Indigenous worldviews.
• Examine personal biases and systemic barriers in service delivery.
2. Advocate for Language Preservation
• Australia has 250+ Indigenous languages, many of which are endangered.
• Speech pathologists can collaborate with communities to support language revitalisation.
• Promoting bilingualism and first language maintenance is essential for identity and wellbeing.
3. Promote Access and Equity
• Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children experience communication difficulties but face barriers to accessing culturally safe services.
• Speech pathologists can improve access to early intervention and family-centred, culturally informed care.
4. Build Genuine Partnerships
• Work with, not just for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
• Support community-controlled health organisations and listen to community voices in shaping services.
