What does “Reasonable & Necessary” actually mean in the NDIS?
If you’ve ever wondering about this – or you’re not sure what you can use your funding for – read more.
The NDIS uses 7 key tests to decide if a support is reasonable and necessary.
All 7 need to be met:
1️⃣ It’s related to your disability
There has to be a clear link between the support and your disability – not just an everyday cost everyone has (like groceries, rent, normal furniture, etc.).
2️⃣ It helps you work towards your goals
It should make it easier for you to move towards the goals in your plan (or your overall progress), even if it doesn’t match one single goal perfectly.
3️⃣ It supports your social or economic participation
Will it help you get out in the community, see people, study, volunteer or work? The NDIS looks at how the support removes barriers so you can take part more fully in life.
4️⃣ It’s value for money
Is the cost reasonable compared with other options?
Could paying for this now avoid bigger costs later?
Is there a more cost-effective way?
5️⃣ It’s effective and beneficial
The support should actually help you – based on good practice and evidence for people with similar needs – not just sound nice on paper.
6️⃣ It complements your informal supports
The NDIS looks at what’s reasonable for family, carers and the community to provide, and what goes beyond that. NDIS doesn’t replace parents, partners or friends – it adds support around them.
7️⃣ It’s something the NDIS is allowed to fund
Some things are on the “NDIS supports” list, and some things are clearly “not NDIS supports”. Even if something helps, the NDIS can only fund it if it fits the rules.
At Braveheart Plan Managers, we use these 7 tests every day when we look at invoices and reimbursement requests. Our job is to help you:
✅ Understand why something can or can’t be claimed
✅ Use your Core and Capacity Building funding with confidence
✅ Avoid rejected claims down the track
If you’re ever unsure whether a support is reasonable and necessary for your plan, send it through and we’ll happily take a look and explain it to you.
