Struggling With Tight Hamstrings? Try This Stretch We Use In-Clinic That Actually Works!

If you’re an active person — running, training, surfing, lifting, whatever your thing is — chances are your hamstrings have copped a beating now and then.

Tight, sore, even slightly strained hamstrings are one of the most common things we see in clinic. And the frustrating thing? A lot of people do stretch... but feel like it doesn’t make a difference.

This is where a technique called PNF Stretching comes in.

It stands for Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (yeah, a mouthful), but don’t worry — it’s super simple and ridiculously effective when done right.

TheStretch: Hold-Relax with Agonist Contraction

1.Starting Position
Lie on your back with both legs extended

Lift one leg (your target leg) up to about 90° at the hip

Keep the other leg flat

Hold behind the thigh or calf with a non-elastic strap)

2.Passive Stretch (10–15 seconds)
Gently pull the leg towards your chest

Stop where you feel a moderate stretch in the back of your thigh

Don’t force it

3.Isometric Contraction (6–10 seconds)
Press the heel downward as if you’re pushing into your hands or the strap.

Activate your hamstrings

The leg stays still — this is a static hold.

4.Relax Briefly (1–2 seconds)

Release the contraction and let the muscle relax.

5.Agonist Contraction – Active Stretch (15–30 seconds)

Now, use your hip flexors and quads to lift the leg higher into the stretch. Don’t use your hands this time — it should come from your muscles.

6.Repeat (1–3 times)

Return to the starting position. Each round can help you get a little more range and a lot more relief.

Why It Works

The isometric hold helps “switch off” tight muscles. The active stretch encourages the brain to let go even more by engaging the opposing muscle group. The result: more effective release, less tightness, better flexibility — safely.

If you give it a go at home, let us know how it feels! (And if you’re not sure you’re doing it quite right, we can always run through it in your next session.)

The 5 Most Common Causes of Shoulder Injuries (and What You Can Do About Them!)

Shoulder pain can creep in quietly or hit you out of nowhere — whether you’re a weekend warrior, desk jockey, or juggling toddlers and shopping bags.

At Mint Holistic Health, we treat shoulder pain every single week. These are the five most common causes we see — and most importantly, what you can do about them:

1. Poor Posture
Slouching, hunching, or holding tension in your shoulders? Over time, this throws your alignment out and strains muscles and joints.
Tip: A professional postural assessment can help pinpoint and correct imbalances.

2. Tight Pecs
Tight chest muscles pull your shoulders forward and limit movement.
Tip: A massage ball rolled gently across the chest (especially near the shoulder joint) can help loosen things up.

3. Weak Back Muscles
If the muscles around your shoulder blades are weak, your shoulders lose their stability — setting the stage for pain and injury.
Tip: Strengthening exercises like rows and band work can make a huge difference.

4. Stress
Yes — stress! When we’re tense, we hold our shoulders high and tight. This limits circulation and overloads the muscles.
Tip: Deep breathing, movement, and targeted massage can help your nervous system reset.

5. Shoulder Injuries (Strains, Tears, or Frozen Shoulder)
Already got a ni**le (or something more serious)? Don’t wait for it to get worse.
Tip: Early treatment can shorten your recovery time and prevent long-term issues.

Feeling any of the above? You don’t have to put up with it.

We’re here to help you reset, recover, and get back to moving well.

Goodbye Neck Pain! 5 Self-Treatments Secrets You Need to Try

If your neck feels tight, stiff, or like it’s carrying the weight of the world, you’re not alone! Whether it’s from hours at a desk, stress, or just sleeping in a weird position (we’ve all been there), I’ve got you covered. Here are five easy ways to loosen things up and relieve that tension.

1. PNF Stretching – A Fancy Name for a Great Stretch
PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation—say that three times fast) is an amazing way to improve flexibility and ease tightness. Here’s how to do it:

⭐ Sit comfortably and place your left arm behind your back.

⭐ Place your right hand on your left ear.

⭐ Tilt your right ear towards right shoulder

⭐ Apply light resistance (about 10% effort) by pressing your head against your right hand for 10 seconds.

⭐ Relax the contraction, take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, gently stretch your head towards the right shoulder again, this time without resistance.

You should feel a nice stretch along your upper trapezius—no pain, just relief!

Repeat the steps on the opposite side.

2. Give Yourself a Mini Neck Massage
Not quite as good as the real thing, but it’ll do in a pinch:

Place your fingertips on either side of your spine at the base of your neck.

Apply gentle pressure and pull the tissue forward, repeating as needed.

Use your fingertips to make small circles from the base of your neck up to your skull.

3. Let Gravity Do the Work
If you’re feeling tight at the front of your neck, this stretch is a game-changer:

Roll up a towel or grab a half-foam roller.

Rest your head on it, letting your neck gently extend backwards.

Relax and let gravity do its thing—no forcing it! You should feel a light, comfortable stretch.

4. Heat = Instant Relaxation
Heat helps muscles relax and improves circulation—plus, it just feels amazing.

Pop a heat pack or wheat bag on your neck for 10-15 minutes.

Let the warmth melt away tension and stress.

5. The Easiest Self-Treatment of All - Let Me Do It for You!
Okay, so technically this one requires zero effort on your part—but hey, making the decision to book an appointment is a form of self-care! If your neck still feels like it’s made of concrete, don’t stress—I’ve got you covered. Click the booking link or scan the QR code and let me work my magic. No stretching, no massaging—just a whole lot of relief.
