A year ago today, we opened Cow Cuddling Co. to the public. It's safe to say the concept was a little weird and we subsequently received plenty of media coverage on radio, TV, and print media across the country. We booked one session on that first day and were only trading two days per week.
Our initial goals were simple - to get through one year of trading without going broke and to employ someone within our local community living with an intellectual disability or mental illness who has struggled to gain meaningful work. Thanks to the amazing level of support we received from the Cairns community, we didn't go broke (YAY!) and we will soon be celebrating a year of employment for our superstar Farm Hand - Donna (YAY!). We were also able to expand the operation to Thurs-Sunday trading.
This year we hope to extend trading to 7-days-per-week, increase Donna to full-time hours, purchase the remaining members of our herd's family, and employ another local person struggling to find work (including people who are having trouble finding work due to recently being released from prison). We are proud of our hiring practices and our staff. We are proud to be an example of why businesses should look outside of the prescribed channels to acquire talent. Our staff are the core of our business and we will continue to showcase our talent and challenge the prevailing ideas of who is the 'best' person for the job.
Thank you to the wider Cairns community for showing us so much support. We have had hundreds of people come and spend time with our beautiful cows and this has funded a safe home for the cows, their food and vet treatments, the creation of one local job (more to come!), and $1,000 worth of donations to the local cancer wellness centre and truly inspiring charity - COUCH. Beyond this, it was just so heartwarming to see so many young children get to spend time with an animal that they love so deeply but don't often get the chance to get close to (let alone cuddle).
Cow Cuddling Co. began as a project to help our cows but quickly evolved into a much broader community-focused social enterprise aiming to deliver support to our cows as well as to Cairns' locals, businesses, and charities through community partnerships, charity donations, and employment. We look forward to doing this for many more years to come and wish to sincerely thank you all for your support.
Haven't come checked us out yet? We would love to see you on the farm and introduce you to / let you cuddle the whole team. BOOKINGS @ https://cowcuddlingco.com/online-bookings/
