🩰 Pre-pointe Assessments • At Goolwa Physio, our physiotherapist Jenna has a strong background in dance and performance management, offering pre-pointe assessments.
With over 18 years of training in a variety of dance styles, Jenna has completed all Royal Academy of Dance examinations, taught ballet, and has also trained in aerial acrobatics. Her deep understanding of the physical demands and technical requirements of performers ensures a tailored approach to assessing a dancer’s readiness for pointe work.
A pre-pointe assessment is essential to determine whether a ballet dancer is prepared to transition safely to pointe work, typically around the age of 12. Given the high prevalence of dance injuries associated with pointe work, particularly in growing adolescents, it is crucial to meet the necessary physical criteria. The assessment includes a detailed history of past injuries and dance experience, followed by a thorough objective examination of key factors such as ankle range of motion, stability, strength, and foot alignment. Some dancers may be ready for barre work en pointe but require further assessment before progressing to centre work. If specific criteria are not met, a personalised home exercise program will be provided to address areas like strength and stability, ensuring safe development. Since each dancer progresses at their own pace, follow-up appointments may be necessary before advancing to pointe and beyond the barre.
