Kathleen Murphy: Naturopath & Acupuncturist

Kathleen Murphy: Naturopath & Acupuncturist Clinical naturopath and acupuncturist, living and working on Bundjalung Country, in Northern NSW. I

I’m a naturopath and acupuncturist, based in leafy Lismore and working across the Northern Rivers Region. I have been in practice since 2009, with a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy and a Master of Applied Science in Acupuncture. I began my career working in a large acupuncture and naturopathy clinic in Brisbane’s CBD, before relocating to Sydney in 2012. At that time, I joined the team at Bourke Street Clinic, an integrative clinical environment where I worked alongside medical and allied health colleagues. I closed my books and took maternity leave following the birth of my daughter, to take some time for myself and my family, and to allow me to work on several big projects. This included the development and roll-out of MamaCare Health Services an in-home postpartum health program… a passion project of mine. I also used this time to focus on postgraduate study and complete my acupuncture qualification. I returned to practice with Dr Paulette Maroun and colleagues at Paradigm and Co, in Sydney’s CBD; an integrative medical collective and wonderful place to work. I also did home visits, all over Sydney, as part of MamaCare’s services. As for many people, 2020 has been a year of great upheaval, challenge and change. Mid-pandemic, my family and I relocated to Northern NSW, as part of my husband’s work with the National Centre of Naturopathic Medicine and here we have happily settled. I’m now working in Lismore and do home visits across Northern NSW. www.kathleenmurphy.com.au

Incredibly grateful that I can support so many lovely folk *and* that I can do it in my new clinic space. We've really hit the ground running. Hurrah! 📌🌿🧡🤸‍♀️

Hi friends! For anyone new here, hi and hello 👋

I'm Kathleen, naturopath and acupuncturist here in leafy Lismore / Widjabul Wiabul land.

I've been in practice since 2009, which makes this my 17th year in clinic. Time flies! Before moving to the Northern Rivers, I worked first in Brisbane and then Sydney, and have always practiced in integrative and/or interdisciplinary environments, as it's important to me to work collaboratively with other clinicians and modalities.

In the clinic, I see all sorts of people and presentations, from musculoskeletal aches to complex chronic health conditions. I do however have a particular passion for reproductive and women's health, which both naturopathy and acupuncture can be an excellent support for.

I also do some lecturing amd clinical supervision in the naturopathic programs at both SCU and Torrens, which I absolutely love.

We relocated to the Northern Rivers 5+ years ago and, three years ago, my husband and I bought a large off-grid property in the hills outside Nimbin... it is incredibly beautiful 🌳 (and an incredibly large amount of work!)

I like to share health and clinic info on socials but, fair warning, there is quite a bit of mowing and content too!

New clinic, new days and times!
Come find me at Shop 4a, Strand Arcade, 74-78 Molesworth Street, Lismore -- and here's *when* you can find me here and / or book in a session 🗓
If you need an earlier or later time than what you can see in the book, always feel free to flick me a message and we can work it out - especially if you're looking online and can't find a day or time that suits xox

She's open! It's been a BIG couple of months getting this space ready - from a blank canvas full of potential (i.e. a box with fluros and questionable fittings) to a beautiful healing space. Hurrah! I was so excited to open the clinic doors for business today! It's certainly been a minute, as we've done most of it ourselves, on weekends and days off, pulling in family (especial shout out to the dads! 🙌) and friends to help on occasion. ThankyouooOOOOooo it takes a village etc (to open a new business? I guess so!) Also, massive love and gratitude to my beloved Jon - best in all ways - for his support and encouragement, and to my little mate Molly, who has been very patient with her busy parents and also a great help in so many ways. The space isn't totally finished yet - more artwork, more plants (always), signage our front etc.. but that's all on the way... and for now, we're good to go! Seeya there soon 🥰

Yep. Yep! I'm going back down the hill into town and opening up my own clinic - a space for acupuncture, naturopathy and a big herbal dispensary. Exciting! And bittersweet too, to leave my beloved crew at Northern Rivers Health - Alstonville, Goonellabah & Lennox Head (but we'll all still be connected - can't get rid of me that easily hahaha)

I've had this bubbling along in the background for a little while now, but as the year comes to an end and I'm starting to gut / fit out the new space, it's time to spread the word. More details to come over the next few weeks and, of course, if you're a patient of mine, I'll make sure you have all the info you need on what's happening and how to keep appointments and support consistent (and easy) 🧡

For now, it's business as usual here in Gbah, right up until I finish appointments for the year on 17th Dec... and when I start back on 12th Jan, it will be from my new clinic space in Lismore.

More information to come and I'll share some snippets of behind the scenes chaos of us building the space (because it is largely me, Jon and some family/friend ring-ins putting it together... why not hey, it's been the YEAR of living and working amidst construction!)

Watch this space!

Just *one* more community acupuncture session left for the year... next Monday, 24th Nov... and there are still a few spots free. Book it!

Although I'm working up to 17th Dec, it's all private appointments (also great, but not at the community acup price point) and the community clinic won't be back up amd running again until mid Feb.

So, if you want to get in, call our lovely admin on 02 6628 0453 or book online (link in my profile) 📌🫶

Earlier this year I completed training with the Microbiome Restoration Centre, to deepen my knowledge and understanding of digestive health and the microbiome.

As you may or may not know, naturopaths are notorious for their interest in gut health and paths of elimination 💩 but this really had me level up – a holistic and evidence-based dive into the most effective strategies for diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal disorders. Fascinating. And, more importantly, extremely clinically relevant. It has certainly enriched my practice, and I look forward to doing more training in this area, to continue building on the support I can offer patients.

❓️ Did you know that naturopaths and acupuncturists – like all health practitioners – are required to do CPD (continued professional development) every year, in order to maintain insurance (in the case of both naturopathy and acupuncture) and professional registration (in the case of acupuncture).

Each year, I have to complete at least 30 hours of CPD for naturopathy and at least 20 hours for acupuncture. This equates to a short course or a multi-day conference… though I always end up doing *well* above the required hours for both naturopathy and acupuncture, when I add in extra courses and training, peer/colleague case meetings, academic lecturing, professional mentoring etc. I think it’s so important to keep learning and growing... as both a human and a practitioner. Everyone benefits 🧡

Welp we are racing towards the end of year, and I have only six weeks left of appointments, before taking a break over the summer hols / festive season. Time flies!

If you'd like to get in for a treatment, need a tune up, want to plan health goals into the new year, or just wanna say 'hi', I would recommend booking yourself in sooner rather than later to make sure you get a spot!

Book online (link in my profile) or call the clinic on 02 6628 0453 xox

I've got some exciting things brewing for the new year... and looking forward to sharing more about that soon 🥰I

I love herbs... for all manner of medicinal and culinary uses!

🫚 This Gentian-Ginger combo is a classic herbal stimulant and support mix, which can help to kick start the processes of digestion (stimulating saliva production, gastric acid, and enzyme secretion) so that food can be more easily digested, all those valuable nutrients better absorbed, and then... waste effectively excreted. Just 10-20 drops of this bitter blend, 10-15 minutes before food, can make quite a difference. This morning, I'm making this dropper bottle up for a dear friend of mine who's doing a health reset for spring... but there are many instances where a herbal bitter tonic can be recommended.

🥬 While I'm at it, I'll also spruik the value of regularly featuring bitter foods in your diet for similar digestive benefit, together with the nutritional value they provide... things like: dandelion, rocket, endive, cress, mustard greens, radicchio etc... AND always making sure you're well hydrated!

🚫 As with any medicine, no one size fits all, so this combination and/or dose won't be appropriate for everyone. For example, Gentian isn't recommended in pregnancy, and alternatives than can be used - e.g. Globe Artichoke - may not be appropriate for folks with certain allergies. So, it's essential to check with a qualified herbalist / naturopath and/or clinician who's done additional training in herbal pharmacology before you take anything.

A reminder that I run a low cost community acupuncture clinic every second Monday Northern Rivers Health - Alstonville, Goonellabah & Lennox Head (Goonellabah clinic). This is usually booked out well in advance, but we have quite a few spots available in the coming weeks.

Appointments are only $50 (less than half of a normal session) and can be claimed on private health, if you have extras coverage. Although the price is reduced, the quality of treatment is not! You still get a nourishing therapeutic treatment, just in a shared setting.

To book in, call the clinic on 02 6628 0453 or use the online booking calendar: https://alstonville-osteopathy.cliniko.com/bookings

Here is your annual ❄️winter❄️ reminder to keep your neck warm and covered - especially when it's windy and especially when there's a dramatic drop in temperature (as we've had this past week).

Not only is it a vibe to keep cosy and warm - in Chinese medicine, it's an important lifestyle prescription.

At the back of your neck / shoulders are bilateral acupuncture points (BL12 - Fengmen) known as the Wind Gates which are entry points for cold and wind into the body (though, that whole area of the neck and upper back is susceptible). Keeping this area warm and covered will help to protect against 'wind invasion', which is tied to symptoms you'd see with a seasonal lurgy - chills, aches, fever, sore throat, runny nose, chesty cough etc.

Of course, there's more to staying well than wearing a scarf when it's cold and windy buuuuuut it certainly can help. Plus, it's cute! 🧣

🛎 Update on my clinical availability and what’s on offer 🛎

🤎 MONDAY / WEDNESDAY / FRIDAY: Private Naturopathy and/or Acupuncture appointments. Come in for either naturopathic or acupuncture support... or both!... they combine extremely well, if I do say so myself. Holistic treatment and advice, tailored to your needs + herbal dispensary at hand to blend bespoke medicines 🌿🥰

📌 Community Acupuncture Clinic – this runs fortnightly, every second Monday. The community clinic offers half-price acupuncture in a shared setting (multiple treatment beds in the room) so you can get a nurturing therapeutic treatment at more accessible pricing.

🕒 I mostly work school hours, except for Wednesdays, when I have later appointments available. I sometimes come in for early morning appointments as needed, too - can be very flexible!

💻 Telehealth is also available for naturopathic appointments - for those who prefer to meet online rather than in person.

Love working with the wonderful ensemble cast of Northern Rivers Health - Alstonville, Goonellabah & Lennox Head and love supporting this beautiful community! 🧡

To book an appointment, you can call the clinic on 02 6628 0453 or use the online calendar via the link in my profile.

xoxo
