It's world heart day, which looks to improve knowledge about heart health and heart issues occurring every day across the world.
Heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest are two terms that are used interchangeably even though both are different from one another. When an individual has a heart attack, it is due to a blockage in the arteries which leads to sudden chest pain, sweating, palpitation, sinking sensation and anxiety. If left untreated, this can lead to a cardiac arrest. However, there are other causes of sudden cardiac arrest, including presumed cardiac issues, terminal illness, strangulation/asphyxiation, major blood loss, overdose or poisoning, major respiratory issues and drowning. The signs and symptoms of a person in cardiac arrest is NO RESPONSE and NO BREATHING / NOT BREATHING PROPERLY. Immediate action is required to CALL (for EMS & for AED) > PUSH (perform CPR) > SHOCK (use the AED). Most people don't know that this last step rarely occurs and over 90% of people in cardiac arrest out of hospital are unfortunately a statistic.
