AHPPC statement on COVID-19 winter update and ongoing health protection measures to support our community

Unfortunately we are now beginning to see a new wave of COVID-19 infections, driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. This wave is likely to lead to a substantial increase in infections, hospitalisations and deaths as these subvariants are able to evade our immune response to both previous infection and vaccination.
Central Coast Haematology encourage all our patients and their families to ensure they are uptodate with their COVID-19 vaccinations (winter booster now available for all people >30 yrs), wear a mask when in crowded, indoor environments, and to practise good respiratory and hand hygiene.
Oral antiviral therapy is available for immunosuppressed patients who test positive to COVID-19 via your GP or from the practitioners at CCH. Please seek our assistance if you test positive. 😷🧴💉

A free flu jab will be available to all NSW residents in a month-long blitz from June 1 in an effort to combat this year’s expected severe influenza season.

With a sharp increase in flu cases already, the NSW Government will fund flu vaccinations at GPs and pharmacies until June 30.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said there were 1,140 cases of respiratory illness notified this week, compared with 766 in the previous week and 150 presentations and admissions to hospitals.

“We strongly urge everyone over six months of age to get a flu shot as soon as possible to protect themselves and their loved ones, as the virus is easily spread and potentially deadly,” Dr Chant said.

“This is particularly important for those in high-risk groups, such as the elderly and children aged six months to five years. If you live in an aged or disability care facility, are aged over 65 or are immunocompromised, now is the time to book in.

“We also recommend a COVID-19 winter booster if you are eligible, as both flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time.”

The Commonwealth Government provides vaccines for vulnerable populations, and funds GPs through the MBS to administer vaccines. However, as COVID-19 has taught us, the role of pharmacies is crucial and the NSW Government is funding community pharmacies to deliver influenza vaccinations this June.

NSW Health has also permitted pharmacies to administer flu vaccines to children aged five years old, reduced from 10 years, making it easier for families to be vaccinated together. GPs will be reimbursed for any flu stock they have already purchased that is used in the month of June for this vaccination program.

The Commonwealth Government provides free flu vaccine for those considered to be at higher risk of severe illness from the flu, including:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from six months of age
- Children from six months to under five years of age
- People with serious health conditions (including severe asthma, diabetes, cancer, immune disorders, obesity, kidney, heart, lung or liver disease)
- Pregnant women
- People aged 65 and over.

Other protective measures individuals can take include staying at home if sick and washing your hands. Find out more about how to protect yourself from the flu at www.nsw.gov.au/flu.

The staff at CCH encourage all our patients and their families to be vaccinated against influenza as soon as possible. We are already seeing many people in Gosford and Wyong Hospitals with influenza.
NSW Health has announced that influenza vaccines will be free for all people across NSW from as early as next week. 💉😷🧴

For the first time in two years flu is circulating in NSW.

We are expecting an increase in all respiratory viruses this winter due to open borders, increased travel and the reduction in restrictions. And because we haven’t had flu in the community for a few years, our immunity against it is lower too.

Your best protection this winter is to get a flu vaccine, practice safe behaviours such as staying home when unwell. Also remember to keep up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.

May is Myeloma Awareness Month.
All of us at CCH would like to acknowledge the fundraising efforts of the Pollard family who have made these beautiful candles.
(Alas the candles have sold out already this year.)

Information about your influenza vaccination can be obtained at: https://www.nsw.gov.au/health/influenza

During winter our risk of catching viral illnesses is higher. Both flu and COVID-19 can cause serious illness and death, especially for those with underlying health conditions.

It is safe and convenient to get both flu and COVID-19 vaccine at the same time. Stay well this winter – speak to your local GP or pharmacy if you would like to receive both vaccines together.

By protecting yourself, you’ll help keep your family, friends and community safe too.

Antiviral treatments for COVID-19 03/04/2022

Antiviral treatments for COVID-19

The current wave of COVID-19 cases in NSW is predominantly due to the BA2 subvariant of the Omicron coronavirus variant. This subvariant is somewhat resistant to sotrovimab (monoclonal antibody therapy) so we will be recommending oral antiviral therapy (Lageviro or Paxlovid) for our patients who are eligible for infection-modifying therapy.
You can access more information about these drugs by clicking this link: https://www.nps.org.au/coronavirus/antiviral-treatments-for-covid-19#

Overdue for your booster?

If it has been more than 6 months since your second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, you are no longer considered to have an 'up to date' COVID-19 vaccination status.

Staying up to date by getting your booster dose is strongly recommended to strengthen your protection against COVID-19 by up to 95% against serious illness.

03/04/2022

Central Coast Haematology remain very concerned about the high numbers of COVID-19 cases in our local community. Approximately 1 in 50 people on the Central Coast have been formally diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last week and the true number of cases is likely to be much higher. We want to encourage our patients, their families and friends to ensure they remain uptodate with COVID-19 vaccinations.
ATAGI has recommended an additional COVID-19 winter booster dose for those at higher risk of serious illness. This should be administered 4 months after your first booster.
People are eligible for an additional winter COVID-19 booster vaccine (second booster dose) if they are:
• Aged 65 years or over
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person aged 50 years and over
• A resident of an aged care or disability care facility
• Aged 16 years and over and severely immunocompromised (for this group the winter booster dose will be the fifth COVID-19 vaccine dose (three primary doses, first booster and winter booster).

Central Coast Haematology wish to inform our patients that they are eligible for a COVID-19 booster (Pfizer or Moderna) 3 months following their primary course (3 doses for immunocompromised patients) from 21 January at NSW health clinics.
Bookings can be made at Gosford and Wyong Hospital vaccination clinics or at Belmont (Newcastle vaccination clinic) on the following link: https://covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/booking/
Please continue to practice risk mitigation strategies (mask wearing, social distancing and rapid antigen testing) to reduce your risk of acquiring COVID-19.
If you test positive for COVID-19 please contact the rooms on the next business day as you may be eligible for sotrovimab (a monoclonal antibody to the SARS-CoV-2 virus). 🧴💉😷

If you’re 18 years or over and had your second COVID-19 vaccine three or more months ago, you will be eligible for your booster dose at NSW Health Clinics from Friday 21 January.

It doesn’t matter if you had a different vaccine for your first two doses, you can have Pfizer or Moderna for your booster.

Getting boosted will help us all maintain a high level of protection against COVID-19.

If you’re due for a booster, don’t delay, bookings are now open.

COVID-19 Vaccine Facts 17/01/2022

COVID-19 Vaccine Facts

CCH continue to encourage all our patients to be fully vaccinated (2 or 3 primary doses and a booster) against COVID-19. The extremely contagious Omicron variant has infected large numbers of Australians and the only way to reduce the risk of severe disease and hospitalisation is to be vaccinated.
If unvaccinated and recently infected with the virus you should still be vaccinated starting after symptoms have resolved.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention have recently updated their fact sheet on Myths and Facts about COVID-19 Vaccines which responds to the misinformation that is promoting vaccine hesitancy.

COVID-19 Vaccine Facts What you need to know about COVID-19 vaccines, myths and facts.

If any of our patients test positive for COVID-19 (either on a RAT or PCR) please contact the rooms as you may be eligible for sotrovimab which is available for some immunocompromised patients with COVID-19 in the early stages of infection. 😷🧴

POSITIVE RAT | What do I need to do next?

✋ You do not need to have your rapid antigen test (RAT) confirmed with a PCR unless you are:
• pregnant (more than 20 weeks)
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
• unvaccinated (16+ years)
• immunosuppressed
• a worker, resident, patient, or client in a high-risk setting
• asked to by a registered medical practitioner

❗ You and the people you live with must self-isolate for 7 days from the date of the positive RAT. Tell your friends, family and anyone that you have spent time with that you have tested positive and to get a test. Notify your workplace or school and register your positive test result via the Service NSW app or website (coming this week).

🏠 If you are under 65, fully vaccinated, do not suffer from chronic health conditions and are not pregnant, you can safely manage COVID-19 at home. Most people will have a mild illness and recover in a few days, with some people having no symptoms at all.

📞 But remember, you are not alone. If you need clinical support or have non-urgent health related questions during your isolation, call the NSW Health COVID-19 Care at Home Support Line on 1800 960 933 (for positive cases). If you need mental health support, call Beyond Blue 1800 51 23 48 or Lifeline 13 11 14. If you develop severe symptoms (particularly severe dizziness, drowsy or confused, suffering shortness of breath, chest pressure or pain lasting more than 10 minutes, unable to stand) call Triple Zero (000) and tell the operator you have COVID-19.

🔎 We know it can be hard to find RATs, but more supplies are on their way to local health districts, pharmacies and supermarkets. If you come for a PCR at our Gosford or Wyong hospital testing clinics, you may be offered a RAT if you are eligible.

Central Coast Haematology encourage all our patients to proceed with a COVID-19 booster (Pfizer or Moderna) 4 months following their primary course. The ATAGI advice on booster timing includes immunocompromised patients who have had 3 primary doses.
The timing between the primary course and boosters will shorten to 3 months "when practical" which is expected to be in late January.
Please continue to practice risk mitigation strategies (mask wearing, social distancing and rapid antigen testing ) to keep everyone safe. 😷💉🧴

Rapid antigen self-tests for community (COVID-19) 18/12/2021

Rapid antigen self-tests for community (COVID-19)

All of us at Central Coast Haematology are concerned at the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in NSW over the last week. COVID-19 vaccinations remain essential to protect ourselves, our families and friends, our community and our health system. We encourage our patients to proceed with a 3rd primary dose (if you have an active matological malignancy) or a booster of a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you are eligible. It is essential to continue with risk mitigation strategies (e.g. mask wearing 😷, social distancing and hand hygiene 🧴), as recommended by NSW Health.
Rapid antigen tests are now available at supermarkets and pharmacies and can be used by people before and after attending gatherings or before visiting people who are vulnerable to infection (e.g immunocompromised people). More information on rapid antigen tests is available at https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/stay-safe/testing/how-testing-works/rapid-antigen-self-tests-for-community.

We are very proud of Jacqui Jagger and Michael Swab. A huge achievement which will improve the lives of Myeloma patients. 👏

CARING FOR OUR FUTURE | Congratulations to Jacqui Jagger, a Haematology Nurse Practitioner in our Cancers Services team, and Michael Swab, team leader in our Pharmacy Department, who have been awarded funding to pilot and evaluate new ways to deliver care to myeloma patients. It will see patients supported to self-administer some chemotherapy at home, avoiding the need for frequent trips in and out of hospital.

Jacqui says the grant will help “give back a bit of control” to cancer patients.

“This grant will help us provide better support for cancer patients in a number of ways,” Jacqui says.

“Firstly, by removing the need to make regular, sometimes twice a week, visits to hospital, it gives them more time to do the things they want to do. This also helps the patient’s family, who often have to provide transport.

“Myeloma is particularly difficult in that its chronic nature means people are more often on treatment than they are not. This grant will help keep a group of patients particularly susceptible to infections out of hospital, yet in active treatment from the comfort of their own home.

“It will also enable us to develop robust telehealth services that relieve some of the pressure on our Cancer Services teams, providing sustainable benefits to District staff and patients alike.”

The grant was awarded as part of our 2021 Caring for our Future Research Grants. Seven CCLHD research projects have been awarded funding, totalling $127,005. The grants enable CCLHD staff and students to undertake research that will deliver long-term benefits to patients and the community.

ATAGI statement on the use of a 3rd primary dose of COVID-19 vaccine in individuals who are severely immunocompromised 09/10/2021

ATAGI statement on the use of a 3rd primary dose of COVID-19 vaccine in individuals who are severely immunocompromised

ATAGI has recommended that immunocompromised patients, including people with an active haematological malignancy, receive a 3rd primary dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. This includes all patients with myelodysplasia, leukaemia (acute or chronic), myeloproliferative neoplasms, myeloma and lymphoma. A 3rd dose of an mRNA vaccine (e.g. Pfizer or Moderna) should be administered between 2 and 6 months after the 2nd dose. Central Coast Haematology recommend proceeding with the 3rd dose as soon as possible within the timeframe from ATAGI.
Transplant patients require revaccination with 3 additional doses of a COVID-19 vaccine commencing >3-6 months post transplant.

We are delighted that all our staff and so many of our patients are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. 👏👏👏
Some patients with haematological malignancies, especially those on therapy, can have a reduced response to vaccination and hence we also encourage the family members and/or carers of our patients to be vaccinated as soon as possible. 💉💉
For all our patients and their families it remains important to comply with all public health measures ( e.g mask wearing, social distancing) to further reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection. 😷😷

Cecily, Richard and Jacqui encourage all our patients to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The Federal Health Department data from the current outbreak in Sydney shows just 1% of the 2702 people who have caught COVID-19 in Sydney’s Delta outbreak were fully vaccinated. Of the 15 people who were fully vaccinated but still caught COVID, none needed admission to hospital and none died.
Just 5% of cases, or 141 people, caught COVID after having one jab, with the partially vaccinated accounting for 6% of hospital cases, 4% of ICU cases and 8% of deaths.
If you have questions about vaccination please contact us as we are happy to discuss any concerns you might have.
We want all our patients and their families to stay safe.
