Central Coast pet owners - Urgent tick alert!

We’ve seen a surge in paralysis ticks across the Central Coast and pets are being affected fast. These ticks can cause life-threatening paralysis, especially in warmer, humid weather when they’re most active.

If your pet seems wobbly on their feet, vomiting, struggling to breathe or just “not themselves,” seek veterinary care immediately - early treatment saves lives.

Now is the time to check your pets daily, keep long coats trimmed and make sure their tick prevention is up to date. If you're unsure which product is best for them, your local emergency vet can guide you.

Stay safe, Central Coast - and keep a close eye on your furry family. 💚🐾

🐾 Pan’s Brave Journey 🐾
We wanted to share the story of one incredibly brave puppy — and his equally brave family. ❤️
Pan, a border collie puppy, was out on a walk when he was suddenly attacked by a much larger dog. Despite his family’s best efforts to protect him, Pan suffered multiple bites, including serious injuries to his chest.
In shock but determined, his family rushed him straight to the Animal Referral Hospital, where our team quickly began treatment. Pan was given pain relief, IV fluids, and supplemental oxygen as we fought to stabilise him.
The attack had caused severe lung injuries — bruising, air leaking around the lungs (pneumothorax), blood in the lungs, and seven fractured ribs, along with open chest wounds. Dr. Natashia, knowing how serious Pan’s condition was, called in Dr. Ann to assist. Together, they anaesthetised Pan, placed a chest tube, and performed surgery to close his wounds.
Our amazing nurses — Dani and Laura — assisted during anaesthesia, while Nurse Amanda cared for Pan after surgery. 💕 Initially, we were concerned that Pan might need a ventilator, but to everyone’s relief, his lungs began to heal, and he was able to breathe on his own after a few days.
Today, we’re thrilled to share that Pan is back home with his loving family — happy, playful, and full of puppy energy once again! 🐶💖
A special thank you to our animal attendant Kiara, who stayed by Pan’s side from the very beginning, giving him cuddles and comfort while providing oxygen. Because when trauma happens, compassion and care go paw in paw.

💚 Bandanna Day at ARH Gosford 💚

Today our team proudly wore our Canteen bandannas in support of Bandanna Day — standing with the 23,000 young Australians who face the challenges of cancer each year. 🎗️

For over 30 years, Canteen has been there to help young people find the strength, connection, and hope they need when cancer turns their world upside down.

Wearing a bandanna is a simple act that makes a big difference — and we’re proud to show our support 💚

Celebrating Our Vet Nurse of the Year – Brie! 🌟

If you’ve visited our hospital, chances are you’ve met Brie — and if you have, you’ll know how special she is! 💚

We’re thrilled to share that Brie has been recognised as Vet Nurse of the Year at the Greencross Connect 2025 Conference! 🏆🎉

Over the past year, Brie has truly come into her own — growing in confidence, expanding her skills, and becoming a strong, compassionate leader within our team. Whether she’s mentoring junior nurses, supporting her teammates, or caring for pets with warmth and patience, Brie gives her absolute best every day. 🐾

She’s also the heart of our clinic community — organising celebrations, remembering every birthday, and always finding ways to make work a little brighter for everyone around her.

We couldn’t be prouder of this achievement. Congratulations, Brie — and thank you for the care, compassion, and energy you bring to every patient and every shift. 💙

🐾 Celebrating Teamwork, Compassion & Excellence in Veterinary Care 🏆

Meet Lydia, a brave little DLH black cat who has captured all our hearts 💚

At just 5 months old, Lydia underwent her first gastric surgery. Over the past 18 months, she has faced — and overcome — incredible challenges, undergoing a total of four gastric surgeries with the support of an amazing network of veterinary professionals.
Her journey has been a true team effort between:
🐾 Greencross Vets Maitland – Lydia’s dedicated primary care team.
🐾 ARH Gosford – with Criticalist Dr Natashia Evans leading a skilled critical care team that supported the Maitland GP team, especially when Lydia was at her sickest.
🐾 ARH Homebush – with Specialist Surgeon Dr Sarah Goldsmid advising from afar on Lydia’s complex surgical procedures.
Thanks to the compassion, collaboration, and tireless dedication of these teams — veterinarians, nurses, and support staff alike — Lydia continues to thrive. 🌟
We’re proud to share that this past weekend, our combined efforts were recognised with the AREN Collaborative Case of the Year Award! 🏅
Congratulations to everyone involved — a wonderful example of what can be achieved when passion and teamwork come together to give our patients the very best care. 💚🐾

💚 Extraordinary Dedication in Action

The commitment and compassion of our veterinary teams are what make stories like this possible. When 4.5-year-old Staffy Leroy was bitten by a brown snake, it was the quick thinking of his owner and the combined care of Greencross Vets Maitland and Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford that saved his life.

After Leroy arrived in critical condition, the Greencross Vets Maitland team, led by Dr Tracey Stenberg acted fast — administering antivenom, ventilating him and stabilising him for transfer. When his condition worsened, a second vial of antivenom was needed before he could be safely moved to ARH Gosford for intensive care.

That’s when ARH Gosford Business Manager Mel Mozley went above and beyond. With no ambulance team available late at night, Mel and her husband Darian (“Dr Daz”) dropped everything to make the two hour round trip from Gosford to Maitland to personally transport Leroy back for urgent treatment.
Under the expert care of Dr Annie Kaden and the ARH Gosford critical care team, Leroy made a full recovery and returned home just days later.

Stories like Leroy’s remind us what’s at the heart of everything we do — dedicated people who go the extra mile for pets and their families every single day.

🐾 Chet’s Incredible Survival Story 🐍❤️

Meet Chet, a brave 13-year-old Staffy, who recently had a terrifying brush with a red-bellied black snake. His quick-thinking owners rushed him to ARH Gosford within 30 minutes of the bite and it likely saved his life.

Chet arrived collapsed and in critical condition. Our emergency team had to intubate him immediately to secure his airway. He was given 2 vials of snake antivenom on arrival, and another 2 vials over the next 12 hours, a sign of massive envenomation.

The venom was aggressively breaking down his red blood cells (a process called hemolysis), which left him severely anaemic and caused an acute kidney injury. He needed a blood transfusion on day two, and another one six days later.

Chet was dangerously unwell and being an older boy with pre-existing conditions didn’t help. The skilled critical care team did an amazing job working on Chet around the clock. Chet is one tough little man, and against all odds, he pulled through.

💪🐶 After 8 intense days in hospital, Chet finally got to go home to his loving family to huge celebrations from our entire team. What a fighter!
