Planning a trip, but wondering about traveling during your pregnancy?

Generally, the second trimester (weeks 14-28) is often considered the safest and most comfortable time to travel. By this point, morning sickness usually subsides, and the risks of complications are typically lower than in the first or third trimesters. However, the safety of any travel depends entirely on your specific health, the stage of your pregnancy, and your destination.

It's essential to discuss your travel plans with your obstetrician well in advance. We'll review things like:

◾Any pre-existing conditions or potential complications.
◾The required vaccinations or health precautions for your destination.
◾How to stay comfortable, hydrated, and active during your journey.
◾Your due date and how close you'll be to it when you travel (most airlines have restrictions for flying after a certain week!).

Want to discuss your upcoming trip? You can book an appointment with me by calling 02 4335 4000 or emailing admin@kidspointmingara.com.au.

A hysterectomy is a personal decision that can raise many questions. Whether you're experiencing heavy periods, fibroids, or other concerns, feeling informed and prepared is key to a positive experience.

Here are 5 steps you can take to feel prepared and informed before your surgery:

1️⃣ Gather information:
Learn about the different types of hysterectomies (abdominal, laparoscopic, vaginal) and their pros and cons. Discuss with your doctor why a hysterectomy is recommended for you and what to expect during and after surgery.

2️⃣ Ask questions:
Don't hesitate to ask your doctor about anything concerning you, including recovery time, pain management, and any hormonal changes you might experience.

3️⃣ Eating and drinking:
Follow your doctor's instructions on stopping food and drinks before surgery.

4️⃣ Transportation and help at home:
Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and help you with daily tasks for the first few days.

5️⃣ Plan your recovery:
Stock up on pain medication, comfortable clothes, and supplies you might need during recovery.

If you're considering a hysterectomy, I'm here to guide you every step of the way. You can book an appointment with me by calling 02 4335 4000 or emailing admin@kidspointmingara.com.au.

It's Perinatal Mental Health Week, and as an obstetrician, I want to bring awareness to something incredibly important: the emotional well-being of expectant and new parents. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of immense change and joy, but they can also bring significant mental health challenges.

Perinatal mental health issues (which include conditions like anxiety, depression, and OCD that occur during pregnancy or up to a year after birth) are common, affecting up to 1 in 5 new mothers and 1 in 10 new fathers. Please know that you are not alone, and experiencing these feelings is never your fault.

I'm committed to supporting your complete health—mind and body—during this journey. If you are struggling or simply need someone to talk to, you can book an appointment with me by calling 02 4335 4000 or emailing admin@kidspointmingara.com.au.

If you need mental health support, you can reach out to The Heart and Mind Collective.

When preparing for your birth, the support team you choose can make all the difference!

Obstetrician, midwife, or doula? Understanding who does what helps you build your perfect care plan.

◾Obstetrician (OB):
Specialises in high-risk pregnancies, provides medical care, performs surgical procedures (like C-sections), and manages complications.

◾Midwife:
Focuses on holistic, low-risk pregnancies, providing continuous care, managing normal labour and delivery, and offering extensive prenatal and postpartum support.

◾Doula:
Provides continuous non-medical support—emotional, physical (massage, comfort measures), and informational—to the mother and partner before, during, and after birth.

The best part? You can often have a combination! We work together to ensure you feel safe, informed, and empowered.

Ready to discuss your unique needs and birth plan? You can book an appointment with me by calling 02 4335 4000 or emailing admin@kidspointmingara.com.au.

Today, we celebrate World Prematurity Day, a day to raise awareness of premature birth and its impact on families around the world. Every year, more than 15 million babies are born prematurely, before 37 weeks of gestation. This means that nearly one in ten babies born worldwide is premature.

As an obstetrician, I see firsthand the challenges that premature birth can pose for both babies and their parents. But I also see the incredible strength and resilience of these families. On this World Prematurity Day, I want to honour all of the families who have been affected by premature birth. Your stories are an inspiration to us all.

To the NICU nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to care for premature babies, I want to express my sincere gratitude. You are truly amazing!

Did you know that most women will develop an ovarian cyst at some point in their lives? While this is a very common part of the menstrual cycle for many, understanding them and knowing when to seek care is crucial for your health and peace of mind.

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac or pocket in or on an o***y. The vast majority are functional cysts—harmless, non-cancerous formations that often disappear on their own within a few months without treatment.

While most go unnoticed, some cysts can grow larger or be a different type that requires monitoring or treatment. Pay attention to your body and look out for symptoms like pelvic pain, bloating or fullness, pain during in*******se, changes in your menstrual cycle and urinary issues.

Urgent care is needed if you experience sudden, severe abdominal pain, especially if accompanied by fever, vomiting, or signs of shock (like lightheadedness or rapid breathing). This could indicate a cyst rupture or ovarian torsion (twisting) and requires immediate medical attention.

Whether you're concerned about new symptoms, have been previously diagnosed, or just need a routine check-up, a specialised gynaecological assessment is the only way to accurately diagnose and manage ovarian cysts. As an obstetrician, I’ve seen the incredible strength and resilience of families facing a preterm birth.

A preterm birth (delivery before 37 weeks of gestation) can carry long-term health risks for a baby. The journey of these newborns often requires specialised care and significant support. This is why proactive, consistent prenatal care is your best tool.

My commitment is to give every expectant mother the best chance for a full-term, healthy delivery. This involves comprehensive risk assessment, early identification of potential issues, and personalised care plans.

If you are pregnant or planning to conceive and want to discuss your risk factors, you can book an appointment by calling 02 4335 4000 or emailing admin@kidspointmingara.com.au.

On Remembrance Day, we pause for silence to honour the immense sacrifice made by those who served. Their courage ensured the freedoms that allow us to continue building a peaceful future.

Here at Kidspoint Specialists, we are constantly reminded of the profound value of life, and today, we hold deep gratitude for those who protected it. We honour their memory and look forward with hope for a world where the only battles are the ones we win together.

It's common to hear about uterine fibroids and uterine polyps, but what's the difference? While both are abnormal growths found in the uterus, they have key distinctions in their makeup and location.

◾Uterine Fibroids (leiomyomas) are non-cancerous muscle tissue tumors that typically grow in the wall of the uterus. They can vary greatly in size and cause symptoms like heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure depending on their location.

◾Uterine Polyps are usually benign growths that develop from the endometrium (the lining of the uterus). They are often softer than fibroids, have a stalk-like attachment, and can cause irregular bleeding or bleeding between periods.

Both conditions are quite common, especially in women of reproductive age, and both can be responsible for symptoms like abnormal bleeding and sometimes infertility. However, getting an accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. We use tools like ultrasounds and hysteroscopy to determine the exact nature, size, and location of the growth.

If you are experiencing unusual or heavy bleeding, pain, or have concerns about your reproductive health, don't wait to seek professional advice. You can book an appointment with me by calling 02 4335 4000 or emailing admin@kidspointmingara.com.au.
