How do we communicate with children about the current COVID-19 situation in a way that doesn't induce fear and anxiety? Tina Payne Bryson talks about getting results in using "safety messaging" rather than "fear messaging".
We have tremendous power in shaping the meaning (or the sense-making) that our children have when it comes to the messages they're receiving about what's happening right now. In this video, I talk about how the brain is an association machine and that by focusing on safety-based messaging, we can ensure that our children have repeated experiences of understanding that their parent keeps them safe (rather than the message that the world is a dangerous and threatening place). There’s a huge assumption that parents can actually recognize or look at a child’s behavior and say, “Yup, that’s anxiety.”
Here’s the reality: anxious behavior in children is NOT uniform.
Your child might ask repetitive questions for reassurance and no matter how many times you answer, the question repeats. You might have the perfect child at school that comes home and constantly picks fights with you or siblings. You may have a child that can’t focus, motivate, or even loses sleep at night. Or maybe your child is downright angry. Anxiety, in fact, can manifest in a MULTITUDE of forms.
Here are 8 WAYS a Child's Anxiety Shows up as SOMETHING ELSE:

Anger is very much a secondary emotion, underneath that anger there lie many other emotions. To support someone’s anger we need to understand the reason that underpins it first.

What is Emotional Regulation?
Emotional Regulation is when you feel in control of your emotional state in your body. When a trigger does not send you into a frantic anxiety attack, a rage response or a shut down or dissociative state.
Emotional regulation can be tough around the holidays when we are triggered by family, our original and most dysregulating triggers. Despite how much we love our family and how much work we have done, dysregulation is a friend of the holidays.
To help with regulation think of what state your body usually goes into energetically and try opposite energetic actions. So if your response is usually anxiety - try calming and soothing actions. If your normal response is to shut down - try energizing actions.
