What is irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition characterized by abdominal pain and bowel movement irregularities. A chronic condition implies a long-term affliction necessitating continuous management throughout one's life.

What are the symptoms of IBS?

Common IBS symptoms include:
Abdominal pain and cramping, often coinciding with bowel movements.
Diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between both. Bloating and gas production. Presence of mucus in bowel movements.

Alarming and not IBS symptoms?

Consult a doctor immediately if you experience:
Blood in stool or black, tarry stools.
Diarrhea that awakens you during sleep.
Persistent changes in bowel movements, including color, quantity, and frequency.
Severe abdominal pain or worsening symptoms.
Unintentional weight loss.
Fever (100.4°F or 38°C) or chills, indicating a potential infection.
