A spacer is a chamber that holds
medicine, so that you can breathe it in properly💨 An inhaler is slotted into it.
Why are spacers so super? ✨
💙Without a spacer, most of the asthma medication from an inhaler can hit the back of your throat or be swallowed, and not inhaled. If you don’t use a spacer you only get around 8️⃣% of the medicine!
💛Coordinating pressing the inhaler and breathing in at the same time is hard, especially for young children 👶👦
💚When medicine hits the throat or mouth 👄 instead of the lungs 🫁, it can cause side effects like:
- Oral thrush (fungal infection) 👅
- rashes around your/your child’s mouth 👄 and face, which can be sore.
💙using a spacer reduces this risk by minimizing drug deposition in the mouth and throat.
💜the type of spacer your child can use will vary depending on their age and ability and they come in different colors, like these little buddies above!
