πŸ‘Ÿ April 6 - World Physical Activity Day! 🌳

Movement is one of the best medicines for your heart, mind, and body. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a bike ride, or a kick of the footy, staying active helps prevent chronic disease and boosts your mood. πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈβœ¨

The Power of 30 Minutes, 5 Days a Week
The clinical evidence for aiming for 30 minutes of moderate activity on 5 or more days a week (totalling 150 minutes) is overwhelming:

Local Ways to Get Active in Central Queensland

Swimming: Low-impact and a great full-body workout! πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ
--> Gracemere Swimming Pool: Open for laps in the 25m pool (Fisher St).
--> 2nd World War Memorial Aquatic Centre (Southside): Offers heated 50m and 25m lanes for year-round fitness.

Cycling: Excellent for cardiovascular health and easier on the joints than running. 🚲
--> Riverside Precinct: Paved, well-maintained paths perfect for a scenic ride along the Fitzroy River.
--> First Turkey Mountain Bike Reserve: For those looking for a bit more adventure on the trails.

Walking: πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ
-->Cherryfield Road & Cedric Archer Park: Convenient local loops right here in Gracemere.
-->Mount Archer Nurim Circuit: Treetop boardwalks for a walk with a view.

If you are looking to start a new routine or have concerns about your physical limits, book an appointment with one of our friendly GPs. We can help you create a safe, personalized plan to get moving! 🩺πŸ’ͺ

πŸ‘οΈ Spot the croc! 🐊

The team at Gracemere Medical Centre recently enjoyed a family evening at Koorana Crocodile Farm. β›΅
We had a fantastic dinner, followed by live crocodile feedings and a spotlighting tour. A big thank you to the Koorana team for their hospitality, great service, and for teaching us so much about these incredible reptiles.

Check out some photos from our night below! πŸ“Έ

🌾 Coeliac Awareness Week: March 13-20 🚫🍞

This week, is Coeliac Awareness Week to shed light on this common, yet often undiagnosed, autoimmune condition. Coeliac disease affects approximately 1 in 70 Australians, but around 80% remain undiagnosed. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for managing the condition and preventing long-term health complications. πŸ”¬

Here's what you need to know about coeliac disease:

What is it? Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition where the body's immune system reacts abnormally to gluten, causing sometimes pernament damage to the small intestine. This prevents the absorption of nutrients. 🀒 If not treated this can lead to osteoporosis, anaemia and Vitamin B12 deficiencies.

Symptoms Vary: Symptoms can range widely from digestive issues (bloating, diarrhoea, constipation) to fatigue, skin rashes, anaemia, and even joint pain. Many people experience no obvious digestive symptoms. πŸ”

Get a Professional Diagnosis: It's is sometimes beneficial to be tested for coeliac disease before you start a gluten-free diet. Going gluten-free can make accurate diagnosis much harder, as the intestine needs to be exposed to gluten for tests to be reliable. πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ

If you suspect you might have coeliac disease or are experiencing symptoms, please book an appointment with one of our GPs. We can guide you through the appropriate diagnostic process to ensure you get the right care. πŸ₯

πŸ‘‚ World Hearing Day🦻

World Hearing Day is March 3rd. It highlights the importance of the ear and hearing care for all ages. Hearing loss is often gradual and can affect communication and quality of life if left unaddressed. 🌎

Protect Your Ears: Avoid prolonged exposure to loud noises and use earplugs or muffs in noisy work or hobby environments. 🎧

Safe Listening: Keep headphone volumes at a moderate level and take regular breaks to prevent noise-induced damage. πŸš«πŸ”Š

Monitor Milestones: For children, regular hearing checks are crucial for speech and language development. πŸ§’

Recognize the Signs: If you are frequently asking others to repeat themselves or struggling to hear in background noise, it is time for a check. πŸ—£οΈ

If you have concerns about your hearing or want to book a routine ear check-up for yourself or your family, please make an appointment with one of our doctors. πŸ₯🩺

February is Heart Research Month. Heart health is a priority for our community, as many cardiovascular risk factors can be managed or even prevented with early intervention. ❀️🩺

Here is how you can take care of your heart this month:

Know Your Numbers: High blood pressure and cholesterol often have no symptoms. Regular screenings are the only way to monitor these risks. 🩸

Move More: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily to strengthen your heart muscle. πŸ‘Ÿ

Healthy Fuel: Focus on a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, and whole grains while reducing salt and saturated fats. 🍎

Smoke-Free Living: Quitting smoking is one of the most effective ways to immediately reduce your risk of a heart attack. 🚭

If you are worried about your cardiovascular risk or want to improve your heart health, please book an appointment with one of our doctors for a Heart Health Check. We are here to help you stay proactive about your wellbeing. πŸ₯
