World Parkinson’s Day - 11th of April 💙
A day to raise awareness, support those living with Parkinson’s, and share knowledge that can make a real difference.
One important (and often misunderstood) aspect of Parkinson’s disease is falls.
In Parkinson’s disease, falls aren’t just an advanced symptom they can start earlier than you might think. In fact, 25% of falls occur within the first year of diagnosis, and just because someone doesn’t have obvious balance issues doesn’t mean they aren’t at risk.
Falls also don’t only happen when walking, as many people believe. Most falls actually occur during transitions and unexpected moments like standing up, turning around, or initiating movement.
But it’s not all doom and gloom! Many falls are preventable 🙌
Here are a few simple tips to help reduce the risk:
1️⃣ The 3-second rule
Count “1-2-3” before standing or walking — this helps the brain reset and prepare for movement.
2️⃣ Think BIG
Focus on taking bigger, more intentional and deliberate steps when walking.
3️⃣ The U-turn hack
Avoid pivoting on one leg. Instead, use a “clock turn” — taking slow, steady steps to turn safely.
If you or someone you know is living with Parkinson’s, please know you’re not alone, there are support groups available (which we will link below), and our team offers tailored treatment to help reduce fall risk and keep you moving safely. 💙
