We’ve just published a new position statement on safe surround beds and safe sleepers.

This resource explains:

◼️ What safe surround beds and safe sleepers are
◼️ The context of their use
◼️ What providers must consider when supporting participants

Created in consultation with state and territory authorising bodies, it identifies that the use of these devices constitutes a Regulated Restrictive Practice. It also helps NDIS participants – and those supporting them – understand their rights and provider responsibilities when the devices are in use.

Access the position statement here: https://bit.ly/45Vz4IJ

Restrictive practices not only infringe on a person’s freedom of movement, but can also be traumatic, dangerous and breach basic human rights. This position statement supports our regulatory priority to reduce and eliminate regulated restrictive practices.

The term ‘sharp practices’ refers to a range of behaviours that involve unfair treatment or taking advantage of people, including over-servicing, high pressure sales and inducements.

Sharp practices are dishonest, unethical, and not in the best interests of NDIS participants.

This includes unfair pricing – where an NDIS participant is charged more for a product or service than other customers – and incentives or referral payments offered by providers to encourage participants to sign up for their services.

We are actively monitoring provider behaviour for sharp practices and have a range of compliance and enforcement actions we can take against providers we identify as deliberately and repeatedly doing the wrong thing.

We’ve just launched Restrictive Practices and Me, a collection of resources that support meaningful conversations with participants about restrictive practices.

The resources include discussion books in Easy Read and Plain English formats. They can be used to explain restrictive practices in an easy to understand way.

Restrictive Practices and Me was created in collaboration with people with disability, providers, state and territory governments, and the Council for Intellectual Disability.

When a person with disability moves between services providing care - like hospital and home - we call that 'transitions of care'. There are ways we can make these times easier and safer for people with disability. The updated Practice Alert on 'Transitions of care between home and hospitals' is a useful guide for people with disability and their support networks, as well as providers and workers who may be involved in transitions of care.

Download it at https://bit.ly/4iozEDB.

Please share this post with workers, providers and practitioners working in the sector!

Reportable incidents are very serious incidents such as the death, serious injury, abuse or neglect of a person with disability. Registered providers need to notify us within 24 hours for many reportable incidents.

When notifying us, please provide as much information as possible about the incident, the safety of the participant, and the actions you’ve taken via the Registered Providers Portal: https://bit.ly/4jniWG2.

If you don’t notify us, or don’t do it within the required timeframe, you can face serious compliance action including infringement notices and fines, compliance notices, banning orders or civil penalties.

For more information about reportable incidents, including what and when you need to tell us, visit https://bit.ly/4ai48UR.
