🤔 What’s the magic behind nursery rhymes? ✨ Kids of all ages and abilities adore them! You might find your little one singing the same tune on repeat. All. Day. Long.

Let’s dive into why and how we can use this to boost language skills! Nursery rhymes are catchy, short, silly, and most importantly: always the same!

Here are some strategies that our speechies use to develop language skills using nursery rhymes:

✅ Requesting: Encourage your child to select the next song using visuals or gestures, or stop singing and wait for them to request for more!

✅ Joint attention: Use actions and wait for your child to join in, or pretend you’re unsure and let them show you the way!

✅ Expressive language and social skills: Create space for your child to add to the song. Skip a line or pause at a word, and support collaborative singing via speech, gesture or AAC!

Pop, Pop, Pop! - BALL POPPER TOYS ☄️

One of the popular toys at the clinic is the ball popper! Here are a few key skills we can target while having a blast with these poppin’ toys:

💪 Fine Motor Strength: Squeezing the popper and pushing the ball in is a great way to build those tiny muscles in hands and fingers, supporting fine motor skills for everyday activities.

👀 Visual Tracking: Watch the ball as it flies through the air, encouraging smooth eye movements to follow it from start to finish.

🤝 Turn-Taking: Take turns popping the ball to practice waiting and sharing! Model social phrases like “My turn” “Your turn” to promote turn taking.

✋ Requesting: Encourage kids to ask for a turn or request for the ball popper—building confidence in communication.

👂Following instructions: Give directions containing prepositions, multiple steps, temporal words (eg. ‘before’ and ‘after’) to improve their vocabulary and listening skills

Here’s how pretend play helps in occupational therapy:

🤚🏼Fine and gross motor skills: Activities such as dressing up or manipulating toys improve hand-eye coordination, strength, and dexterity.
🫂Sensory integration: Pretend play often incorporates a variety of sensory experiences, like textures, movements, or sounds, which help children process and respond appropriately to sensory information.
💗Social-emotional development: By acting out roles and situations, children learn about emotions, empathy, and how to interact with others.
💡Problem-solving and planning: Pretend play encourages children to think ahead, create sequences of actions, and adapt to new ideas or challenges in their play.
